OK, I think I'm good for Tuesday. Where you goin Salty ? Gestalt, just looked on Google Earth, would'nt VP be flat in a Southerly at low tide or even with a bit of west in it

Are you thinking of heading down to VP Haggar?

problem is that from my experience in a southerly the swell starts to wrap around the bank and it can launch you. like wello in a NE, even at low tide it can be enough to put you off. That doesn't happen in a SE'er or ESE like when we were all there.

None of us have really given it a good go in a good SW'er. so i am keen to see what happens.

but jinxy who has sailed there in a SW tell me that it is flat everywhere in a SW. i am hoping that behind the funnel is going to be the flattest. so that's where i am heading for. So i guess i'll let you know tomorrow night.

all i can say for certain is :-

it gets very bumpy in a southerly at high tide. which i love. when you get a roaring southerly and high / king tide you get small waves. mk and i had a very memorable session there last year in those conditions.

plus the bank is dead flat in a SE'er or ESE and so far i have found it the best in that direction.

Dunno Fitz, just keepin my options open, there's some chance I may not have a car, but I'm workin on that. I've also been scouring Google Earth for possible flat water places in a SE to SW close to home, there seems to be a few potential options but cant be sure until you see them. I hav'nt had a high wind sail since the last VP and I am getting withdrawl symptoms

the other thing that needs to be thrown into the equation is wind strength.

the longer fetch the wind has the stronger and more consistent it is.

bongaree is my pick for the best in a SW'er. it's flattish at low tide on the other side of the channel and the wind has 15km of water to allow it to settle down.

i am only trying VP because i need to see what it's like in a SW'er.

just another option.

Getstalt, we had the same idea. Have you tried the caboolture river mouth ? Don't know what the current would be like and how tall the mangroves may be. It may be OK in 25 knots plus

This is true on the corner of the bank but remember the banks 1.5km long plenty of room to flattern off.

beachmere is supposed to be awesome b&j in a SE'er. but i haven't sailed there.

i reckon you may be onto something. but i would sail further out the mouth. with the trees and stuff i think it will be no good. further out in the mouth beside the bank may be the spot. burrum heads is very similar and runs for 3km

looks like it may be excellent in a NE as well.

back on topic.

still is my pick.

even though google earth is pixelated if you zoom in close you can see the shelf edge. all 2.6km of it.

plus when sailing there years ago with pete i don't rmember it being anything but flat in a SW'er

Yes, Golden Beach. I'll go around the bar first up About 10.00 and come around for flat water later. Went out the bar today. 5.4 and 84 Trance. Did a bit of dredging here and there but still had a good day. Being 85kgs I sink like a rock when it shut down. Not as bad a Gestalt by the sound of it.
