I remember reading that any exercise where you don't support your own weight isn't nearly as effective as those where you do. E.g. swimming, riding, paddling aren't as effective as jogging, skipping, etc.

You should do a skipping exercise DVD Legion, maybe on a SUP

Well, I do do a lot of skipping. But even so, I doubt I'd have the stamina to skip from one end of those behemoths to the other.

BTW, I'm talking about "jumping rope", not dancing around like a pansy in a pink dress like what you think of as skipping.

Lol, you are right! When you said skip I had visions of you in a pink tutu

Oh and here is a trailer for your SUP

Repeat to myself " I must not waist fuel driving around looking for surf when i know there won't be any" Argh[}:)]

Good side is no weed..

Yeah - after seeing it yesterday I just went and did 32 x 50m laps to keep the shoulders turning over... [But I would rather have been surfing, and would have gone had it been only 1ft on a sunny offshore day].

Hi GPA, don't mean to hijack the thread but how have you found swimming for losing weight? i used to swim about 2km a day after work but that was some time ago and I hate going to the gym. I tried jogging and was going well for a while but that hurt my lower back and my knees.

G'day Ados & crew,

In short - swimming is good for fitness and upper body strength, but unless you go hard and often not good for weight loss... Even when I was doing between 6-8km a week (and at that stage I was timing my km's and going for PB's) I have never lost much weight through swimming... but to be fair I have always been bad for what I eat and drink...

But swimming definately helps maintain paddle fitness... no question.

At my peak fitness I found running was the best way to drop Kgs - but like you that does my back and knees now...

My problem is that I have that many old injuries coming back to haunt me that I have to moderate nearly everything I do to 75% intensity and duration of what I would like - otherwise I pay for it badly...

cheers

I started swimming when it was too wet to ride a bike and found it great for cardio and paddle fitness. Actually made a huge difference to paddle. But boring as bat poo and really need to get a water proof ipod. Oh and i still use a snorkel. I had to tell all the oldies I've got a bad neck and they all were cool with..A few even have asked me how my neck is going

I only do a km and try about three times a week but to be honest haven't been for a few weeks now Was counting on surf by sadly now have some early starts demoing boats..

Yes it can be very boring unless you have a hot swimmer girl in front of you!!

I try and think about being efficient and strong in the water and not slip into sloppy technique... I also try and resolve the problems of the day when I am going up and down, up and down.

And I find a 50m pool much better than 25m - and better again if it is outside. You're probably going to Arena Joondalup - I find that they have that too cold for some reason...

And finally, swimming is never my first choice for exercise - but always feel better once I've done it... helps with the back pains too!!

We should probably start getting this thread back on track and issue surf reports

the trick is to imagine you are swimming in a tight tunnel or pipe and imagine swimming through without touching the side. that means a tight technique with minimal splashing. its about economy of movement. the best swimmers are pretty quiet going about their business. Others like to splash around. its all good.

Oh yeah, on the surf report thing. I predict metro will be crap for a very long time.

You could also do some hypoxic training. Try to swim for as long as possible without taking a breath. Added benefit as training for surfing when you go under

Also in terms of exercise for weight loss remember most important thing is your diet. Ain't going to lose weight drinking booze and eating junk unless you eat healthily!

I thought hypoxic training is what gets free divers/spearos into trouble.

Beaches were good this morning. Finally some banks with lefts and rights, glassy, sun was shining and bigger than expected considering the drop in swell.

The problem is carbon dioxide is one of the triggers for you to breathe and when you take a deep breath or hyperventilate which some do before do this, you can pass out as the oxygen gets used up making it very dangerous if you are underwater.

What we did at uni was using a 50m pool and swimming sprints where you'd swim without taking breaths or only at the halfway mark. Then we'd add in land base stuff l ike push-ups and things before sprinting and diving back into the water and swimming to the other end without breathing (it killed me ).

Don't quote me if I'm wrong but studying for exams and staring at my boards in my rooms is driving me mad. I'll do some extra research for ya if want to know more when I'm free

Definitely. Went south at 5am and found much better waves than I was expecting. Got better as the tide corrected. Got out at 10 as I could see the wind starting to shift. Pretty decent sesh.

I was a pretty keen spearo years ago when I lived up north. most of the free diving we did wasn't that deep so I never really got into the training thing. still got my fair share of mackies, snapper etc. gave it up when I moved back to perth, sold the boat too. just didnt seem worth it.

What me or her?

equally, you see some things that cannot be un-seen!!

Hint: get good enough to stay in the Medium->Fast lanes and this should not be a problem...

My two bobs worth with the swimming and losing weight thingy. Hard yakka in the pool generally cuts the flab and builds the muscle. hence no weight loss. i.e.....muscle weighs more than fat. Ya never know who may jump in the lane next to you. Mark Visser one time and a couple of olympians another just to show you how slow you really are swimming.

yes - I have been embarrassed by 45yo housewives and 13yo girls alike! It is truly one of those sports where technique is everything...

So judging by the gloomy reports, I guess I was the only one having fun today? Raced off after the exams and managed to get 1/2hr sesh b4 the winds kicked in. Wasn't big but was fun.

Is it just me or is the line up in the surf generally closest to the which ever entrance from the car park to the beach? I walked about 100m down and had a nice little bank to myself and same with a few others who were ripping it on the next bank.

Those that don't know what they're looking for (i.e. a shapely wave) will just hang around the entrance, yes. If there happens to be the best wave there too, it will be crowded. If you know what a good wave looks like and you see an unmanned peak in the distance, don't hesitate - get into it. But yeah, newbys and lazy people just go in at the closest entrance.
