Thanks GPA, interesting to hear your experience

Im at 2.5 months out of a 3 month recovery (surgeon estimate). Had really good improvement over the first month, now the improvement is very minimal, to almost non-existent each week...its still tender if I knock it etc.

Im back riding my bike to work (surgeon said ok last visit) and this is the limit of my sport at the mo (aaaarggh!), no high impact sport allowed. After riding there is a general feeling of discomfort or a dull sensation of pain.

I go back to the surgeon in a few weeks. At my last appointment he reckoned I'll be ok to get back to full high impact sport at the 3 month term. Its only a few weeks away and Im not feeling very confident at this point.

Surgeon said for this particular surgery, physio has no benefit, so Im not going. With this I miss regular analysis on how things are progressing or where I should be.

Thanks newy for the offer but probably best for me to wait see what the surgeon says next visit.

I went to the physio once and it aggravated the hell out of it - ended up on pain-killers again...

The surgeon said don't bother with the physio "just use it - and stop when it hurts" - so I have been swimming as soon as the cast came off, riding my bike gently from 8 wks, and surfing from the 5 month point...

Athough I can now ride +30km OK, I still find that 15 min on the cross-trainer, or incline treadmill is the max before it starts to remind me I shouldn't do any more. As I said, a car clutch and up 'n' down stairs aggravate it - so I know it's the 'pressing' action that inflames it.

Surprised to see so many people chasing waist high mush-burgers across the Trigg to Scarbs stretch...

Looks like the weed is coming back for a visit too

In regards to all your injuries guys, I guess rest is best in almost every case. The problem with these injuries is that tendons and ligaments recieve very little blood circulation making the healing process so long. It's a matter of baby steps and not doing too much to aggravate it hey. Most important is stretching and even applying some heat and massage to the area. Heck, I do it to myself with the dodgy back I have.

P.s. looking at the camera's and forecast... conditions look crap. Probably have a drive through the coast tomorow and hopefully find something!

I hate stretching... I prefer to start off slow and 'warm up' into whatever I am doing... swimming, cycling, walking, Gym or surfing - then do the opposite at the end of the session. But that's just me and I am most certainly no expert.

PS - any weed at Mullaz jb ?

To be honest, no studies have shown that stretching before or after exercise prevents injuries. If you're gonna do a hammy, you're going to. The most important thing is a proper warm-up like you do GPA. But stretching:
-Reduces muscle tension
-Increases range of movement in the joints
-Increases circulation of the blood to various parts of the body
Just to name the basic few which is why it's so important to do! Heck take up yoga even if it helps for more reasons than improving your flexibility

The forecast jump in swell, hopefully conditions improve with it hey, otherwise is it even gonna be worth it?

Yeah - after seeing it yesterday I just went and did 32 x 50m laps to keep the shoulders turning over... [But I would rather have been surfing, and would have gone had it been only 1ft on a sunny offshore day].

F------ing wind. I can see I'll be surfing mush as soon as the swell arrives..

Any action yet?

My legs are killing after smashing pavement and the skate park all weekend. Worst part is i think my skating is worse than my surfing..

Would any of you guys head out in this? The wave bug is really itching but the ocean looks hell angry . Last time it was a struggle enough to get out the back although the kite boarders seem to be lapping it up.

And jb, maybe its time I follow in your footsteps and take out longboard. No sharks but cars are a worthy replacement

I paddled out this morning, was lumpy and furiously offshore, took me ages to get out. Caught 2 really wonky dumpers and was back at the car by 5:50

EDIT: furiously onshore not offshore. ha

I'm going wave hunting tomorrow (if I get my gearbox back in tonight) and definitely going hunting on Wednesday.

maybe check gearies, looked half decent this arvo and can handle the westerly, swell should be just right, hoping the wind drops a bit by 3pm so I can have my first wave in almost 3 weeks!!!

Hi GPA, don't mean to hijack the thread but how have you found swimming for losing weight? i used to swim about 2km a day after work but that was some time ago and I hate going to the gym. I tried jogging and was going well for a while but that hurt my lower back and my knees.

Swimming is great for losing weight if you set a good pace.

I remember reading that any exercise where you don't support your own weight isn't nearly as effective as those where you do. E.g. swimming, riding, paddling aren't as effective as jogging, skipping, etc.

I''d be a bit skeptical about how accurate that is. It all comes down to intensity. Swimming certainly isn't as good for fitness as running I'll vouch for that...but swimming gets your strong aswell as fit

You should do a skipping exercise DVD Legion, maybe on a SUP

G'day Ados & crew,

In short - swimming is good for fitness and upper body strength, but unless you go hard and often not good for weight loss... Even when I was doing between 6-8km a week (and at that stage I was timing my km's and going for PB's) I have never lost much weight through swimming... but to be fair I have always been bad for what I eat and drink...

But swimming definately helps maintain paddle fitness... no question.

At my peak fitness I found running was the best way to drop Kgs - but like you that does my back and knees now...

My problem is that I have that many old injuries coming back to haunt me that I have to moderate nearly everything I do to 75% intensity and duration of what I would like - otherwise I pay for it badly...

cheers

Well, I do do a lot of skipping. But even so, I doubt I'd have the stamina to skip from one end of those behemoths to the other.

BTW, I'm talking about "jumping rope", not dancing around like a pansy in a pink dress like what you think of as skipping.
