Fact or fiction. A face book friend was in port Macquarie at a doctors. Story goes a local surfer he met there said a big 4m gws had being hanging around for 4 days but no one reported it.

Other reports have the attacked
pegged down to a bull shark.

Getting harder to know whats really going on.

Some coastal towns relying on tourists would be trying to keep a lid on things one would expect.

Media havent really gone nuts as of yet!!!!

My home beach. This happened literally in front on my house ..... Very friggin worrying. I have been fishing the area at night of late for Jew and have lost more baits to big sharks this year than any other
I have surfed it twice in the last two weeks only as it has felt really really iffy in the water there.....absolute bugger this has happened. Not good

As for the GWS. Yes there has been one of the local beaches and yes it is a 4mtr animal. Seen it???.....Yes!

Feel really sorry for the guy attacked and wish him a speedy recovery
Gods speed on healing

Climber i read that a shark was sighted and reported at 10 in the morning. The beach was closed due to the sighting and large schools of bait fish. Did they have any signs up or flags visible that you would see if you rocked up at the beach How do they close a beach or do they just not patrol throughout the day.

Once again reports say his mate saved his life, what a legend

i see the QLD gov dude that has something to do with the shark drums said in the paper.

that there will be no change to shark drumming in QLD with something like 600 sharks taken last year.

and after whats happening in NSW no change will happen.

they were interested in other ways of managing man eating sharks.

but they are limited compared to the system in place now.

Thank ****'n god.

Unpatrolled beach outside of summer and the section that he was surfing was well outside of the (Beach visible ) range of the normal patrol if it was in SLSC season.
As for signs, yes entrances to the beach were signed after the event, from what was noticed. In Sydney now on business so not sure what has happened earlier in the afternoon today.

The human answer to meeting predators in their environment has always been to eliminate them.
Surely with the technology available today an electronic shark repellent system could be manufactured that is placed on buoys and utilising solar power with back up batteries that could be strung out over distances similar to shark nets to keep them away from surfing/swimming areas?
That would minimise the collateral damage of other species like whales, turtles and the like compared to traditional shark nets.

I remember a few years ago some of the Burleigh lads had stickers made "Save Burleigh - bring back the Superbank" after a savage winter swell ripped the bank at Snapper apart and the hoards descended upon Burleigh, maybe its time to for "Save the Goldie - extend the drum lines!" stickers.

My thoughts on it all is that there hasn't been a fatal attack at a beach with drum lines / nets, its tough call though as I don't think nets from Fingal to Sydney are a possibility.

It seems that spring has now come early with the Northerlies now set in which usually sees a drop in water temp & a shift in current to the south - not being a fisho not sure what impact this has on bait fish movements? Potential increase rain in catchment areas & run off through the rivers & creeks?

Lacey - what is the weight of the shark safe you are getting in the DWer? A little extra weight my board isn't going to effect my performance (or lack their off)

Fella's,
I bought and had installed a Surf Safe from Dave in WA 2 months ago when all this started.
Adds a little more than my Iphone in weight. Gives a good bite if you stick your hand on the electrode to check if its working.
I had it installed in a new 6'2" surf / kite board.
Dont believe it has effected the prerformance at all.
Been surfing Broken a bit but havent had any encounters.
When fully charged holds charge for 15 hours, thats a long surf.
Mike.

If I was still surfing on the east coast I would have one of those surf safes for sure. But then I am usually pretty happy to stick with a "keeper" when I find a good one and use it to it dies - so the cost gets averaged in nicely. Once Dave sorts out a nice interchangeable device it will be unreal.

I looked but its a bit hard to make out.

but on the other hand there were lots of vids showing just how well they worked.

even one guy who was attacked, bleeding, the shark circling him ready for another strike until his mate went to help who happened to have a shield. the shark took off.

imo there is something there with electrical because that's the way the sharks work.
just how much or if they have it right who knows.

same as eating eggs. you can find anything to support a either view.

personally I would and will have a crack at the surf safe system.

I don't really believe a couple of stripes on ya board is worth much at all

lacey the guy who had his board bitten at lennox, got his board repaired by my mate...dingo surfboard repairs well he got dingo to paint shark stripes on his board placebo thinking maybe? me if I was old mate that board would have been left as and put in the pool room

as for me posting the link,it was not my opinion, just something I thought was intresting.

BUT imo I cant see a frenzied hungry shark being stopped by one....I do want to believe in them though....

I just thought id mention the testing that the Herald sun reported on was a different product. "No Shark" is what it was and the testing was also found to be flawed, thats why it was never released or finalised. ( i should say I've never heard of it before and just found out a bit on it today). That headline and story was nothing more than a opportunity to sell papers..

The second story that Ted shared was completed by UWA at a cost of $1.8 million dollars paid for by our state government..IMHO thats just plan crazy money to invest in a private product.. Especially when other companies get no support

I wouldn't bother trying to keep up with him Vanders, the board fitted with this devise will soon be sold off, from history I'll give it one month max
