hey hydro, that you flogging the keyo you just got? how come, no good? didn't suit you? quick turnaround.
Yes and no, just curious about any interest in it.
Absolutely love it and keen to find some good swell to put under her. She lives in my family room taking pride of place in the space on the lounge vacated by the misses.
Surfed it in waist to overhead a couple of times in 2 plus 1 config, and once as a single with an 8.5" fitted.
Didn't gel with the single yet, but absolutely loved the 2 plus one with a bit of push under it, thing just lights up on the rail game. Turns way tighter than I expected for the length, which was one of my main concerns at 7'3 and me being half midget at 5'8.
Got a pair of FCS2 mod keel twins coming to have a crack with in small beachies, hoping it has enough grab in the pin to not go sideways too much, if not I'll throw in a stabiliser. BTW anyone know where you can get a good stabiliser to fit a single box?

I heard he is also going in for a facelift due to MickPC threats ![]()

Haha ya goose,
Yeah I'll be wearing one of those full face balaclava wettie hoods so that he doesn't recognise me.
But my cape with Captain Snake Midlength Tosser might give me away ![]()
I'm not too worried about MickPC, might be awkward if he does an agro but I'll just paddle away.
If he comes after me we can soon test who can hold their breath the longest. I'm good for just over 2 mins, 3 in a pinch.
Either that or he can remind me I promised him a beer.
Cheers Mick, I owe you one.

FCS do an adapter plate that fits the box, then you can fit any FCS 1 fins into the plate. FCS also do a tiny FCS 1 nubster.
Or just buy a decent 2+1 set up to begin with.

Seen that adaptor before but had forgotten about it.
Can't we all be friends
Its been a testing year for most![]()
Agree Macaha,
2020 has been more than testing for me. Been a right royal year from hell.
Got no beef with Mick or anyone, beer offer stands for anyone who notices me by my board in the lineup.
Tis the season to be jolly after all.
Twin fin mids.
Three of my favourites. Would love the Keyo with black glued blank.
Actually would love any of them.

Twin fin mids are a thing that shouldn't be. ![]()
Blasphemy Drip, repent or be burnt at the stake for your vile utterance.
Hast thou not witnessed the divine lines and theology of twin prophet Torren Martyn? A disciple of the morning of the earth.
Wilt thou crucify the pure path of twin fin enlightenment and tear down it's creator's shrines?
Doest as thou must, but thine efforts will be in vain against the throng of weathered 70's hippies and new age hipsters.
None can stand before their steeze and style, nor can they compare to their enlightened lines and flow.
Masters of their own designs that will never relinquish them.

Yeah they appear to be too tight too straight

Really? Seen some beauties and ridden a few boards that were not designed as a twin but fitted with them and they went great.
6'10 Webber Double diamond, and Torq mod fish love twin fins. So I can imagine that a board specifically designed for them would be an awesome ride.
About to try my Keyo 7'3 with some FCS2 mod Keels as well. Really liked it as a two plus one so will be interesting to see how the twins go.

Maybe mate, I see guys on them and they seem stuck in mud, bogged down turns but hey I'm no expert.
Depends on what type or style of surfing your chasing.
Torren is a really good surfer. Yet watch him closely and it looks like he is nursing is turns. That's because twins work best in small wave fun boards. When it get bigger, they don't work....

Unless other things are altered to make up for the twin's wild donkey feel, like toe them out, or pull them back towards the tail of the board (lots of those around). Which defeats the purpose of a twin fin.
Maybe a mid-length twin fin in small waves might be fun. I don't surf small waves much - not bragging, it's just where I live - but I have tried mid-length twin fins in 4-6. It works, but other fun set ups work better. Never felt like I could really lay into a turn properly and with all my grunt.
Which brings me back to Torren nursing his turns. He is a better surfer than me, surfing better waves than me, yet he doesn't look particularly committed in his turns.
Go look at Neal Purchase Jr on a duo - now there's a twin fin and committment. Watch that wind up in the third reo. Except it's more a split single...

When Kelly surfs a heat at Pipe with a twin fin - a better surfer than, oh, you know, anyone ever - he uses a stabiliser. Which I guess makes it not a twin fin.
Oh yeah. I'm not anti-twin fin. I have three of them by three different shapers. I just think mid-length twins are a marketing driven fad for the groovy kids.

I hear ya Drip,
I guess for me it's a path of discovery.
I had a set of upright twins in the Torq and they didn't work well. Great pivot and release, but very little drive. Replaced them with some Keels and a completely different board. Plenty of drive, plenty of bite, yet great pivot if you wanted that, and they hold brilliant when you dig the rail in.
However the exact same upright fins in the Webber Diamond were amazing, heaps of drive and loose.
Neil's duo is interesting, I found it refreshing that he gave an honest appraisal and said that they do need some juice under them to really shine.
Anyway, when I'm next down that way I'll have another look at the Hippie quads, likely a 6'9. Didn't like the purple one so might need to think about a custom.
As for Torryn's approach and style. I hear what you are saying but have seen him actually shred like Pacey in other vids on twins.
Certainly did not appear to be nursing the turns.
But I guess that is a matter of perspective as well. The same could be said for Devon Howard on the CI Mid. Not shredding and lacerating either, and taking some turns easy. Might just be an expectation to see someone styling more than shredding.
I know that I preferred watching Steph Gilmore flowing and styling on a twin more than comp surfing. But that's my stage of surfing at the moment, enjoying the moment and ride for me and not for the need to try and impress.
I don't really care who rides what or how, as long as they are having the time of their life.
Small observation on this midlength fin configuration sub-thread...
I shaped (with Salty) a 7'3" WP Fwd Egg about a year back, still well in love with this board.
We set it up primarily to be surfed as a Single but also has the option to switch out as a twin for versatility.
For me, I prefer the single most of the time. It excels when the waves are bigger and workable. Feels smoother, more neutral, more in sync with the wave.
Buuuuut, when the waves are smaller and rounder/steeper/faster the twin has more acceleration and definitely more hold.
I might add though that i'm a VERY mellow (and very average) surfer, not ripping, not trying to whack the lip... Trim, highline, cutback, trim, cheater 5, cut back... etc
The fin config with this design really makes for very different feelings depending on the conditions.
I personally think the reason mid twins are so popular right is that they are really functional in so many of our day to day east coast waves.

Possibly. I leave two boards in Queensland because my WA boards don't work real well over there.
Gonna be in Currumbin from next week & I fancy buying myself a xmas prezzie.!. Which shops/makers usually have a good range of stock mid length boards. Is there any?.... & yes mac ill prob go down to Byron & go to your second home.

Mate most stores are very low on stock. Give me a buz and I'll shout you a beer at Burleigh

Is there any? None that I know of. Most surf shops on the Goldy seem to cater for the shortboard crew and not much else these days. You could try Empire surf at Nobbys. To their credit they will stock some mids and mals but not a wide range. Maybe Clearwater at Currumbin but I haven't been in there in awhile.
The best bet would be to look further south around Byron. Northcoast Surfboards, Dead Kooks, Beau Young, McT, just to name a few are all down there. As Mac said though, whether they have stock is another question ![]()

Depends on what type or style of surfing your chasing.
Yeah a twin can bog down on turns if you tail stall them too much because they generally don't have the same drive as thrusters or quads. Less fin area generally equates to less force over area and thrust.
Hence why twins are normally set back further to work with the hard rail or channels and give that extra resistance / force whilst still being pivoty.
My Torq mod fish is designed for quads or thruster. So the front boxes are too far forward for a twin. Which is why when I used my large flex twins it bogged down. Turned on a dime but lost all energy. Have now fitted some K2 Keels and a couple of knubster trailers and it is the ducks nuts. Plenty of drive and more pivot for tighter turns. Holds well on steep faces and trims straight into a bowl from drop in without getting left behind because of a bottom turn.
All of which perfectly suit our fast steep short lived beachies in Perth.
The Keyo on the other hand thrives as a two plus one on reefs, points, and longer walks. An absolute dream machine to ride in those conditions and with the extra rocker in her is fluid, responsive and sure footed in all turns.
If you dial the right fins into a board it transforms how that board performs in the type of conditions you want to use it for.
Would still love to try a Yahoo Hippie in 6'9 to eventually replace the Torq but funds are tight and I just went to the dark side and bought a second hand 9'0 Yahoo mal for summer fun.
Gonna paint some big eyes and a toothy grin on the underside to scare away the great whites.
Was about to go for a surf near Freo north breakwater the other day and a flippin 5m white came in just behind the break.
Likely the same one reported on WA news and tagged the other day. Couldn't believe my eyes, thought it was a couple of people swimming in sync about 4m apart. But was the dorsal and tail thrashing through the surface, moving way too quick for people swimming.

Right on brother. As for your style of surfing, that's real surfing.
Some retro pin lines on a 7'2" mid.
Looks good Chapo, but I love clear skins.
What paints that? Dulux weathershield gloss enamel ;-)

I'm no hipster, actually more likely a middle aged dumpster, but I like twins. Could be because I have never really tried them or quads before and am loving the difference and flow of them on mid?

Quads work way better on bigger boards.

I had a quad mal for a number of years, the thing was a weapon on heavy beach breaks, stuck like a fly to the wall and had so much speed and control in steep waves it was almost cheating.
If I had the cash I would have a mid length twin, look fun to surf.
