a doer upper

Ha ha! Good one HG02.

I know it was tongue in cheek, but I'm not really up for all the headaches that this doer upper would bring. Ramona posted that link earlier in the thread.

I had a look at Han Christian yachts as you mentioned, beautiful inside and the craftsmanship looks fantastic, but I don't think it is what I'm after.
Hard to see too much difference between Han Christian and this:

www.boatpoint.com.au/boats-for-sale/dealer/used/OAG-AD-864850/1986-LORD-NELSON-YACHT?cr=0&psq=%28%28%28%28BoatType%3D%5BSail%5D%26LengthInFeet%3Drange%5B34..50%5D%29%26%28%28%28SiloType%3D%5BDemo%20and%20near%20new%20boats%5D%7CSiloType%3D%5BDealer%20new%20boats%5D%29%7CSiloType%3D%5BDealer%20used%20boats%5D%29%7CSiloType%3D%5BPrivate%20used%20boats%5D%29%29%26Service%3D%5BBoatsales%5D%29%26Make%3D%5BLORD%20NELSON%5D%29&pso=0&pss=Premium

From the research that I did, exquisitely built, but very slow. I'm not after a racing yacht, but as I mentioned before, I want to get something that will get a move on when conditions suit.

I'm leaning towards a cat I think and not just based on speed.
Something between $100k and $200K, there seems to be a reasonable choice out there in that range.

Cheers!

The Chessboard in the Lord Nelson is the wrong way about if players are to sit on either end of the U shaped lounge. The bottom right square for each player should be white.

other than that, it looks really nice!

Still don’t get it. What is the difference between antifouling a centre board / swing keel to antifouling a fixed keel. Does it use more paint?
At the end of the day we are talking about boats up to 200K for extensive cruising we are not talking about a weekender. With 200K comes ongoing costs and these costs need to be expended to protect your investment.
Things go wrong on a boat, that is accepted. I think the idea of being able to get in to an area where a draft of 2 mts plus prohibits has some merit.
I recently invested 175K on a boat which has a draft of 2.1 meters, the excessive draft is my only regret, particularly for coastal cruising.

Yachts are not investments. Very rare to see cases now where people ever get their money back. Lot more paint on a centreboarder because there is so much more wetted area. The board and the interior of the case have to be painted. Having a shallow draft helps getting into some places but unless your planning on drying out [and ruining your antifoul] you are still going to get wet getting ashore so still need the dinghy. The killer is finding a site to enable the board to be lowered while you work underneath. I was looking at buying a yacht with a draft of 2.1 metres but realized I was limited to a few occasions a year when I could get on the local slips and I would have to compete for bookings with the other owners with the same problem.
NowandZen needs a boat that can be serviced where ever he goes and if he decides a catamaran is the way to go then it needs to be able to fit on slips around the place. Local cats here sail to Port Stephens.

That's a seriously nice boat! Cutter rigged. good engine and autopilot and a Monitor. Folding propeller so the previous owner thought it sailed OK. It would sail an easy 6 knots in a breeze and motor sail at 6 knots in a drifter. Probably the same speed as a normally over laden cruising cat.

Remember, cruising sailors spend 98% of their time in harbour. 1% sailing and 1% motoring. Cruising cats use their main sails once every two years!
Cruisers never sail to windward and usually wait for the weather. Iron topsail if they are forced to sail to windward.

That is very definitely a heavy displacement Motor Sailer.

Nice fit out and all and most likely very comfortable but it is an antithesis to the yacht in your avatar. I think the 3 cylinder diesel would be a bit light on for a boat of that design, size and displacement. More suited would be a four or six cylinder engine of two to three litre displacement.

If you enjoy sailing I doubt you will enjoy TRYING to sail that one.

For about half the price I think alohahugo's yacht is much better buying.

for tropical coastal cruising a catamaran would be my only choice
one with grounding keels that can take a joke and protect the props and rudders
the safety of twin engines is also a plus for me, another must would be permanent shade
over the helm position and good visability from the helm without sticking your head
through a hole in the roof ,good luck with your boat hunting cheers ray

Certainly if cruising northern parts of W.A. or Qld, permanent sun shade over the helm position is an absolute necessity no matter which kind of boat you are on.

Behold the winner of London Boat Show in 1978 - Bowman 46'

There happens to be one for sale from the Northern Beaches, at 36yrs old she's a classic beauty and would fit into your budget with change. Always turning heads, she's a solidly built yawl with breathtaking bluewater cruising capabilities.

After having been patient, I am now another step closer to the dream of buying a yacht - as the house is sold!
The advice that has been given around "selling the house to buy a yacht" and "don't put anymore than x amount of dollars or % from property into buying a yacht" has been well received - so please, lets not go there again.

Thanks for all the other advice so far everyone, I have read some books and done lots of research and I feel that I am beginning to get a better idea of the type of yacht I am after.

My wife and I are still as keen as to buy a yacht and live on it in the next year or two - as mentioned before, we are going to do a bit of 4wding first. So there is no pressure on to get a yacht, I will take my time and make sure I don't buy something I will regret later.

We plan to bareboat again next year as we haven't yet experienced the pro's and cons of a catamaran, so really looking forward to that!

Cheers!

Well done Nowandzen, live your life take your time and enjoy your 4wding... I'm in the same boat as you and still will do my 4wding and will take my time in buying a yacht its a large learning curve for those of us that haven't had the ocean experience as others have. All the best mate keep the dust of your face and let the winds be kind to you

There is certainly no need to be in a hurry buying a boat. Easy to buy but can be hard to sell.

Or you get to my stage and feel it is time to sell the boat and move on but then get cold feet. I have had a few people interested in MB but I have to say I am not keen to part with her.
It has taken many years (boat bucks) to get her as I want her, ready to go almost anywhere (maybe not Capes Horn or Good Hope) and not requiring money to be spent. Went for a sale today, crap wind on Pittwater but otherwise brilliant day.
Nothing will happen with selling her in the near term and I am overseas Jul-Sep so I have booked a mooring at Lord Howe for the BBQ on the Beach rally in November. Havefun is up for it again and maybe Cisco will find the time to join the old team that delivered his Lotus flower to Bundy.

With that kind of pressure, how could one decline. OK, I am in but just remember, There will be no stealing on this boat!! When the packet of "Butternut Snaps" comes out there are only 12 biscuits in the pack and that means 4 each.

Yes fantastic yachts, & that one looks well equipped for distance cruising, most of its gear 5 years old so not too bad. Sadlers popular in England & some go in the Jester Challenge, I think skippers of Sadler 32 have to ask for permission to enter(which is always granted in the usual good spirit of the event) there must be Sadlers under 30ft too, as I recall them always in the Jester Challenge, maybe a 26 ft'er

Anybody interested in going over and bringing it back to Sydney?
How much would we have to pay here, just GST on the landed cost I think?
