Another windsurfer pinged Friday night at Dendy St.

We need to be hearing this through an official channel

Stephen, are you getting reports from the water police on these fines?

I was speaking with my contact in the water police yesterday and he was only aware of the one from the other day. Saying this I was not aware of this until today. To help with this cause we need to post known facts.

Managed to break my boom today several hundred metres off Elwood. After swimming for about 20 minutes, the boys at Elwood LSC must have taken pity on me and came out in their zodiac to give me a hand. Back on the beach I took the opportunity to have a chat to several of the guys about the new swimming zone. Turns out they are about as happy as we are. They were never consulted about the size of the new swimming zone and admitted they are unable to adequately monitor the entire area. They would be more than happy to have the poles moved, or as suggested by someone at the meeting on Wed, a new pair of markers within the existing poles that would mark the perimeter of a smaller ?swimming only? area. If we work closely with these guys, I?m sure we?ll have a much higher chance of actually getting something done here.

Afterwards, I was sitting on the beach (watching all the non-broken boom b@stards enjoying their sailing) noting quite a few individuals sailing deep into the swimming zone. Given we may be working very closely with the Elwood LSC on this issue, I would suggest everyone do their best to keep out of the swimming zone. Not going to help if we p!ss them off.

Great feedback and yes we need to speak to the affected LSC to get their feedback too. Your conversation needs to go further. The volunteers from the other night will be reading this.

Anyone know who is calling the police? This will be our lead into what people we need to engage and educate.

I was advised by the water police the fine from the other week was not from a call but when the water police drove past and noticed the new signs and some windsurfers breaking the law by sailing in the no boating zone.

Update from last Wednesday meeting.

The volunteers have made contact with PV and an informal meeting is being organised for hopefully this week. A number of suggestions have been made to help. All of these have been forwarded to the WV PV Team. Due to other commitments, not all can be tackled straight away.

Meeting minutes (brief)
1. Intro to meeting
2. Presented last 3 years of WV and PV discussions including lack of local support from mid 2010 to the shared wind zones
3. Open discussions about key affected PPB windsurfing locations and what options could be considered
4. Discussed building better relationships with our local LSV clubs
5. Asked for volunteers to help WV with PV etc.
6. A group of 6 volunteers would start open communications about our key concerned beaches (Elwood, Dendy St, Hampton, Rickets Point, Bonbeach and Frankston) with PV and other government bodies.

Being pro active, with solutions at hand is always a good front foot to stand on,..

VW needs to be showing PV that they are there to help them keep the beaches safe and accident free.
If they or the water police don't have to allocate resources to enforce laws to that effect they should be happy.
At the end of the day that's what the fines are for.

I'm sure surfers have had similar battles to fight, has anyone made contact with Surfing Vic,..?

If one looks at Surfing Victoria's web site you can see huge logo's with links to;
"Play it Safe", "Vic Health", "State Gov Vic.",... also many sponsors, etc,.. but,..
- A clear message of health, community and safety,..!

I for example would like to see signs like these at every Windsurfing and Kite boarding spot,..!
Reiterating the main message of safety.!!

Its for both for the public and the users of the area to see the sense in a set of rules to go by.

Perhaps going to the meeting with a mock up of a Sign like these but for Windsurfers and Kite boarders, and gauge there response,..?

I just joined up with windsurfing Victoria.I put my money where my mouth is. It would be good to keep an update on this issue on your home page

Meeting went well. Minutes will be issued soon. At this stage the communication channel has been reopened and we have discussed our concerns. We have some clear objectives to help progress our objectives. These will be detailed in the minutes.
A big thanks to the volunteers.
