I hate to bring up the Wombat again but........... After a dismal surfing effort from me in 2018 (pretty sure I could count the number of sessions for the whole year on one hand), my New Years resolution is to get back in the water.

My current goto board is a Mark Richards Puffer 5 (5'10 x 34L). It's a fantastic board but I'm not a fantastic paddler. While I have no problems with the MR in small surf, when the surf gets good it's another story. The competition for waves increases, the sweep increases, the paddle back to the line up gets harder and I struggle to get waves.

So, I was looking for a new stick to help me get the stoke back, with the main criteria being to help me get more waves. With me being an ordinary surfer at best, performance was way down the list. I wanted a board that was easy to paddle, easy to pick up waves on and easy to surf.

I was looking at longboards and mid lengths. I fondled a Howard Special Mini in the shop some time back and I've wanted one ever since. So I was drooling on the North Coast Surfboards website, bemoaning the fact I couldn't afford a new Howard Special Mini when I happened across a Bear Fat Arse Wombat on their sale page. I used to own the Surftech version some years back and liked it a lot. But at 6'6 long, would it be enough board to fulfil my criteria?

I mulled it over for several weeks, looking at other options but kept going back to the Wombat. The other boards on the sale page disappeared until there was only the Wombat left, waiting patiently for me.

I couldn't resist any longer and after a quick dash down the coast last week, It's now safely in my garage. Will it be the one? Only time will tell.

I had a puffer 5. Pretty good board

This falls in the micro mal category

5.10 fountain of youth
36 litres -has a bit of weight to it.
Had it out in crap ne surf yesterday morning.
Only got one wave. All i needed.
Amazing speed, loose and keeps running. Surfed over a gutter right into the beach.

Never thought i would surf a board that short and was hesitant in getting it.

However i suppose its like surfing a longer board with the front cut off.
Sorry about photo quality. But here is an idea of the lenght of it

You had a wombat too

I've got the wombat mkII don't ride it much but there a good board. Bit of a different tail to the mk1 and slightly different outline but don't think you'll be disappointed with it.

What side bites are in that? The ones from the Howard?

Actually it was slop with some punch in parts. Thats was the pleasing part.
The blurb says it will handle punchy beachbreaks.

Yes i had a wombat. Seem to remember i got the best out if it as quad. Large ish front fins a bit smaller fins at the back. Went really good in broken up sectional alley .
Sold it to pay for a mal

I'm not sure what board the fins are meant for SP. They were included in the price and already in the board when I picked it up. I was in a bit of a rush, so didn't stop to ask. The Centre is an 8 inch and the sides are 3.5 inches high x 3.5 base.

A mate of mine from the Goldy bought a Tak scorpion from the Surfboard warehouse some years back. Brand new, unridden. Obviously they scanned the Tak to make their Fountain of Youth model. Had a Tak surftech 6'10" for a few years. Very versatile board...desert island kind of versatile.

Picked up this nice speed egg by Campbell Bros a cpl months back and waited waited for at least 4ft waves to christen it. Went unreal so smooth and great acceleration out of turns. Has a bonzer 7" fin and have bought another 7" but with more flex so looking forward to next decent swell. Could be waiting waiting again.

Not far wrong cuttlefish it is a wicked all rounder for 4' and above in any conditions, punchier the better and great to smooth things out after riding thrusters and quads in the smaller beachies

Yes SP shaped by Malcolm and its 6'10 .x20 x3 so it's got some volume although the e wing pulls the tail in and it gets on rail really well, was a bit worried it might be too thick but was surprised how well it went .

Yeah mine is similar dims, touch longer. I had the same worry as I am pretty light but the volume is well hidden in them amd the rails are nice an thinned out.
Agree that the Ewing helps with the surf ability especially when you get you foot back right over it, you can really notice the rail bite more.

That's the one. The original bear one was designed when beau rode for them and the mkii is the one he updated when he starting making his own boards.
I like mine with the thruster setup 2. I run reasonably big side fins in it 3s or 5s from memory, never liked the small xs or gs fins.

Chris has been and gone...C Bucket has been shaped and currently at the glassers!
Hoping for a result in the next 2 -3 weeks. Was down having a look at some of the Stock C buckets-awesome!
The guy was saying that Chris was stoked with how good a job the ghost shapers were doing finishing his cuts!
Anyway...I'll compare the one he did for me to the stock ones when it's done....surely he'd sprinkle some magic dust on his ones!
