Hi Cat.
I loved my first bigger boat, a Catalina 28 but I think the market is telling us that Catalinas are slower than most other yachts and their quality build is not as important as it was ten years ago.
They are dropping in price and will continue to do so as evidenced by the Catalina 30 that was on the market over the xmas period.
It was as new 2012 and still sold for around $100,000.

Big and powerful and scary, but good value!

^^^^ That would be a fantastic yacht to own. At $35,000 you could spend that much again updating and customising to your requirements and it would still be a bargain.
If a syndicate of 6 bought it with $10,000 each in the kitty and then all took it sailing weekly they could recoup their outlay by cancelling their gym memberships. ![]()

Ok fair.
So what does the brains trust think of the north shore 38s?
this one says setup for single handing. Which is become more of a focus for me. But I also assume a 38 would be a better platform for heading north.
How long do you reckon you could cruise in one of these before feeling claustrophobic? SYDNEY to Whitsundays, explore for a couple of weeks and return?

Gawd, I lived for years in a boat a fraction of that size. I used to know a couple who lived full time on a Primaat, which is the boat inspired the Endeavour 24 - but the Primaat is smaller.
We have a boat of similar interior volume and could live on it for a year or two, no sweat. The NSs are not bad boats but the name recognition means that you pay a lot for them - and probably sell them easily as well.

They are a very nice yacht, well built and good performance. Looks a bit underpowered at 25hp and is not set up for longer distance cruising in my opinion.

I met a local NS38 owner who had been a boat builder with North Shore Yachts. He had seen the first one built come up for sale so he bought it for himself. For a boat of 36 years of age she looked great. He said he regularly sailed offshore and the boat was fast and went well.
Pretty good recommendation from the boat builder himself and confirmed for me that they are definitely worth including on my potential next boat list.

I posted some shots of Morning Star about 2 years ago showing off Rumblefish's excellent rigging work. In the flesh that boat looks amazing and would have to be good value compared to buying a $24K S&S and trying to get it to the same spec.
Just needs a Fleming on the transform.
Its way better than ''Mendana' that was sold for circa $80K last year.
It'd actually be interesting to know how this fire started, and more importantly, how they managed to stop it destroying the whole boat. Can anyone contribute info on this?

What price is great buying?
That price!
Good buying. Maybe you should ask a certain party in S.A. what his opinion is.
Old production boat needs work, hasn't been looked after or just sailed/cruised hard. been for sale for a while why no buyers? Good buying maybe hard to say going by just the pics, that's my opinion.
Not that I'm in S.A but I'm sure there's certain party's there that could give opinions.
