No he was afghan, bloody good effort, he nearly made it
You sir....Made my day!
Equipment failure = you couldn't relaunch...?
I am just a dumb windsurfer and even I know it won't easily launch with somebody lying on it

Reading this thread. I thought it was going to be Andy H ....
Hahaha, I'm glad the blokes safe.
Haha, no chance... Was only 3km
Hope they had a chat to him about his safety equipment. Dont know the story but from 3km he could have done a self rescue attenpt atleast.
In reality thats a good way to sit considering the sharks over there.
3km out is too off shore for our sharks.
Agree self rescue looks like a possibility. And it looks like a float vest so hes obviously safety conscious.
Perhaps he was chilling for a few mins before setting out?
Bloody embarrassing but give him a break - could be anyone on any day.

Seriously dumbest thing you have rattled off this week... Obviously you don't have any idea about sharks.

And Obviously you dont have any idea about humour!
But Im sure if I had been totally negative you would be the first to cotton on.
What possible reason or explanation can there be for being 3km out....
Training for the Oceanics/L2L is the most likely explanation.
Theres been lots out that far lately. Not a bad thing necessarily.
But yep a couple or more training buddies would be a good move.

i thought you were one of the smart ones.
nyuck nyuck nyuck
take that windsurfers!
whats with all you guys suggesting being 3kms out is a stupid thing?!?! thats literally bloody nothing. ive lost count the amount of times ive been 20+k's off the coast. 3 is bloody nothing. just give the coastguard a heads up and take a waterproof uhf with you some water and lunch. ment to be a bloody adventure sport and all you all do is mow lawn and boost jumps for retirees on the beach. second you do something outside of that you try to throw the book at them for being dangerous etc etc this sport was a bit more fun before it became the new toy to have for your midlife crisis.

cool story bro
Equipment Failure
Lost board???
20+K off the coast, Really??? & you take a packed lunch, so what you sit yourself down in the water and have lunch while your 20K off the coast. Hmmm
One of my favourite subjects :)..
Why is it stupid to go out 3k+ on the ocean when you are prepared. I hear this so often and I never understood why people accept that bush walkers get lost and trigger a massive search which costs a bundle or it is normal that boats may have a problem somewhere out there and radio for help and nobody thinks anything is wrong with that. It is not even sure (at least I have not heard about it) that the guy even asked for help.
I go regularly from Mullalloo to Hillaries (or further) upwind and then back and at times are out well over 2k or even more that 3k depending on the wind directions. I do this is in all wind conditions and have done it with all my kite sizes from 6 to 19. I wear a life jacket, have a laser flare and have a waterproof phone (not an iphone in an aqua pack for that matter). I also have an epirb and a waterproof vhf but do not take that unless I plan to go real far.
Once the wind dropped on me when I was out with the 19 and I had to swim one k or a bit more .. so what ... I am not afraid of sharks.
If I have equipment failure in conditions we have right now (18-22knots average) I don't even bother to blow up my life vest (it is an inflatable one - less bulky). I roll up my lines, secure my board with my leash which I carry for that purpose in my life vest and start sailing the kite laying on one edge. What is the big deal ? If you go out that far you have to be prepared to swim a bit. If I have a failure 10ks out I will call for help, just as a boat would do. I resent the notion that it is stupid to go far out with a kite, it is only stupid when you are not prepared or create a massive rescue bill because you have not used common sense. I have an epirb for my safety and if need be I will use it and I will know that I have saved the authorities a lot of money and many people a lot of grief that I did not get lost but signalised where and when I had trouble. This is minimum effort for all involved. It is only stupid when you don't think about the consequences and prepare for the worst. This guy did not look stressed and it could have been well possible that he just waited while the helicopter had already spotted him. So all you people who commented and have never been further out then 400m, why don't you just shut up. By the way .. new regulations regarding kite surfers will come into affect or already are I lost track, but I don't really care since I cover my ground anyway.

gmd
would you go that far out with no backup if there were no emergency services to save you![]()
gotta agree though it should of been a self rescue back to the beach
That guy should just do down winders stay close to the shore line where the action is.Doesnt matter how experienced you are .getting stuck out there in great white territory is not a good situation!.what if the life savers had not seen him till after dark.Could have got much more serious!.
Looks like he has done the sensible thing - stayed with his kite to remain visible and looks pretty calm about it.
3 km should be an achievable swim for all of us - you have the added buoyancy of your harness and a wetsuit so it's easy to take breaks. Given that he was rescued about 430 pm I wouldn't have wanted to be out there much longer - WA doesn't have daylight savings and being in the water at dusk is not a good move from the bitey shark perspective!
I will stick to boosting for for the elderly or anyone close to the shore who wants a good laugh.
Power to you guys who can swim 3 klms. I am rooted after 300 mts.
