Would you give up your mobile phone tracking data if it helped quicken the resolution to Covid19?

www.news.com.au/technology/coronavirus-australia-controversial-plan-to-stop-the-spread-using-big-data/news-story/f7a98a25173d75264a0bc1982bf26977

I would. I have nothing that important to worry about, and would happily install an app to track where I have been in order to let the government find out where it may have spread.

Don't need to install an app as the phones are tracked anyway.
South korea did it to monitor Covid cases to make sure they stayed at home

Yeah done already. It's just anonymous at the moment and only passed on for profit.

I think location data that apps like Facebook use is different to the outright export of data for each user from the Telcos cell location information.

For you people that think its done already (at least in Aus), I think you are overestimating the ability of Telcos to do anything of this nature. My experience working for 2 of them, they are pretty poor at anything like this and I have worked on projects where we have to provide this information. Its far from an automatic task.

... but the question is, would you willing give up that data for a few months, or is it that important to you to keep things private. My best mate at school used to insist that he never wanted to use credit cards because the government could track him. I don't know why any one would want to track him, as like most of us, he did nothing wrong and never went anywhere interesting. I think people read too many novels and think that this data is important to people.

The jokes on him now of course as more and more people willingly sign up to social media and willingly allow other people to see their private data.

Sure, this information might be useful for advertising and in a shopping mall to try and target you with ads based on where you have shopped, but otherwise, no one cares.

*SOMETHING IS FISHY!!*?? Wuhan to Shanghai = 839km Wuhan to Beijing = 1,152km Wuhan to Milan = 15,000km Wuhan to NY = 15,000km The Coronavirus started in Wuhan yet there is no effect of Coronavirus in nearby Beijing or Shanghai but many deaths in Italy, Iran, European countries and USA. All business areas of China are now safe. *Something is fishy.* America is not just blaming China without a reason. Even today, India is locked down but all the cities of China are open. China has also announced the opening of Wuhan from April 08. Not a single leader in China has tested positive for the deadly Coronavirus. *Something is fishy.* The virus has ruined many economies around the world. Many have had to close their borders in an attempt to contain and control the spread of the Coronavirus. Thousands have lost their lives, millions have now got this disease, countless people have been locked in their homes and many countries have placed their citizens on lock down. *Something is fishy.* The Coronavirus orginated from the city of Wuhan in China and has now reached every corner of the world, but the virus did not reach China's capital Beijing and China's Economic Capital Shanghai, located in close proximity to Wuhan itself. *Something is fishy* Today Paris is closed, New York is closed, Berlin is closed, Delhi is closed, Mumbai is closed, Tokyo is closed, the world's major economic and political centers are closed, but Beijing and Shanghai are open. No Coronavirus effect is seen in either cities. There were only a few cases but the virus had no real effect on Beijing and Shanghai. *Something is fishy.* Beijing is the city where all the leaders of China live, including their military leaders. There is no lock down in Beijing. *Something is fishy* Shanghai is the city that runs China's economy. It is the economic capital of China, where all the rich people of China live and run major industries. There is no lock down here, there is no effect of the Coronavirus there. *Something is fishy* Beijing and Shanghai are the areas adjoining Wuhan. The virus from Wuhan reached every corner of the world, but the virus did not affect Beijing and Shanghai. *Something is fishy* Another big thing is, that the worldwide share market has fallen by almost half. In India also the Nifty has gone from 12 thousand to 7 thousand, but the share market of China was at 3000 and just merely dropped to 2700. *Something is fishy* This leaves one to speculate that the Coronavirus is a bio-chemical weapon of China, which China used to carry out destruction in the world in order to gain economic supremacy. China has now put this virus under control, maybe they also have the antidote/ vaccine that they are not sharing with the world ever or will do when it is in their best interest to do so. *Something is fishy* Hollywood stars, Australia's Home Minister, Britain's Prime Minister and Health Minister, Spain's Prime Minister's wife, Canada's Prime Minister's wife, and Britain's Prince Charles, among others, have contracted the Coronavirus, but NOT A SINGLE POLITICAL LEADER IN CHINA, NOT A SINGLE MILITARY COMMANDER in China have tested positive for Coronavirus. *SOMETHING IS FISHY!!!!*

This App seems pretty clever - minimal, if any compromise of privacy .. it works like those little "tag" devices to find your keys.

Your phone records the Bluetooth ID of any device near you (i.e. other peoples phones).

Bluetooth ID's are sent to the app from a central server - the central server needs nothing from your phone. No location, id, email, nothing. At worst, all Bluetooth ID's submitted to a central server. And even the Bluetooth ID can be encrypted before sending to server, thereby revealing nothing except your IP?

^^^ Yep I'm more inclined to believe the conspiracy is the cover-up of how bad it is in China, not that they bio-engineered it and released it on the world.

Economically crippling all of your customers is not a plan.

It's very exciting to ponder the idea, but it doesn't *really* make any sense.

See, that's the sort of thing I want to see. Even if you were concerned about privacy, you could have your bluetooth ID/Key/orwhatever you want to call it, roll into a different code every 30 seconds, which would make it pretty impossible for anyone else to use that data unless they also knew what your key changed to.

When the government find an infection, they can then work backwards to find who else was in distance. Much more helpful than having to get a person to contact people and try and figure out who was near them.

I actually just watched the video now.

Why aren't our government doing the same thing. A simple thing, and usable. Maybe given time we will have to install this as once a lockdown is done with there is always the risk that a new outbreak could occur, and this is the most sensible way to track those people down.

Hey FN, current privacy laws do not allow private data to be legally transmitted without some conditions being met. Some conditions are it has to be with the owner's consent, the owner must be notified of the purpose of the data collection and there's a few others. Mate, you're in IT aren't you? You know the rules.

It will take laws to be changed and we are going to see a revolution in monitoring systems here specifically to combat/deter crime but triggered by the need to track/limit infectious disease transfer (ie CCTV with facial recognition and number plate recognition to track movements and an increased ability for mobile phones to be tracked by authority) .................. welcome to the new world where big data will be king

Most of us sign away our privacy rights to Facebook and other apps already.

This could be an opt-in solution. If you don't want to participate, its your choice. I think a lot of people would see the benefit to it and social pressure would probably make them do it.

This would make contact tracing much much easier, but there are going to be people that circumvent it or opt out, so there will stll be some, but its better than not doing it at all.

Most people advertise their bluetooth id anyway, so is it a crime to capture that from someone else's phone? i doubt it.

The concern i have with data gathering is when companies like facebook, and cambridge analytica team up with politicians to decide who is going to win the next election.
You might not think you have anything to hide, but targeted advertising has proven to be very effective.

Theyve got it sown up. They're making that much money our politicians are stumbling over one another trying to sell off everything of value.

How would they benefit by screwing that up?

They wouldn't. It was an accident and series of poor decisions by their government (in hindsight). They are well on their way to retuning as THE world economic superpower which is their ultimate objective so this is a stumble for them and they will get back to where they were pretty soon. Australia will not go back to manufacturing because consumers are rarely prepared to pay what it really costs to manufacture here. We are already importing from China as we were pre CV19. Yes I know that. Not that you've got a container full of steel.

It irks me when people just blandly echo the narrative, whichever one is doing the traps, without thinking about it.
