This is sure to be met with the usual boiling frogs' comments of "If you've got nothing to hide, then you shouldn't be worried!"

Australian police can now hack your device, collect or delete your data, take over your social media accounts - all without a judge's warrant.

The original bill was the real grievous erosion of privacy....This is an extension into active cyber, as I see it predominantly so the AFP can take over accounts of people they have arrested and use those to catfish others - but the existing legislation already allows for the surveillance. But if you're foolish enough to have a social media account then not a lot of sympathy...

I dare say it extends beyond just social media.

Yes, sorry, not meaning to downplay it - more trying to say that there are already significant powers to track and monitor what you do under the surveillance act - this predominantly bring the capability to actively engage and impersonate online, which is more of a social media issue. Much harder to pull that off when you're doing a video call on signal for example. And if you genuinely have concerns about your privacy than get off facebook, twitter etc before you start worrying about this.

It's not just about social media accounts.
It's also about hacking into your phone directly. It would seem remotely as well.

must be a fine line because the cops can't incite you to commit a crime.

If you could show they have egged you on in anyway, or tricked you into committing a crime the courts would (should) throw it out.

I would guess, for example, you would have to ask for a hitman before they offered. If you saw an offer, even if it was somebody offering their hitman services to a different party and telling them how good they were on facebook, before you directly asked I reckon you'd have an arguable case that they acted to incite crime.

haven't dug into it but think that was already an option under the security act, just couldn't change anything or copy or download.

They could prior to this, but they needed a judge to approve. I believe the crux in this policy is that the judge approval has been taken out.

Well if it helps the police stop say, a terror attack, murder or drugs into the country etc. quicker without having to wait for a judge, sound good to me.
If they want to listen to my phone calls and read my seabreeze posts, I give them permission as they must be really bored.

Yes & apparently the the old adage of always question always wonder in regard to science has changed to do not question the pre-approved science. Can't say I'm a firm backer of Ivermetcin but given the choice I would choose it or Covid before any of the covid drugs masquerading as vaccines without hesitation.

Tamil tigers aree considered terrorists, but if you know India...
Some murder is actually self defence but sometimes the courts don't see it that way.
Some drugs should be legal but aren't.
This one might really blow you away, some police are not 100% on the level.

And police have to read my posts, it's a requirement for my security clearance.

Right....

I feel sorry for these police. Are you sure they 'have to'? Must be a heck of a risk.

Yeah? Wow, sounds pretty serious security clearance. I would expect that they have the right to check on your posts, but not actively 'have to read your posts'. I wouldn't want that job, as reading anyone's posts is always going to be boring. Are you sure you don't mean that they are able to do so if required? Sounds odd.

I wonder what the R number for Covid threads is?

And, will Loz have to have some lockdowns, let's call them suspensions, to slow the spread?

why have a legal system? Just believe everyone that says they have been wronged, and grant police the power to do as they wish to hunt those they perceive to be criminals.

really we're just wasting everyones time with this due process nonsense.

No, that's 'just the flu'. It will be okay over there and everyone will recover and those that don't didn't deserve to anyhow because they weren't eating a macrobiotic diet or were too old.

Reading the original link, they still need a warrant for the 3 new powers. So what's the fuss?
To say it "does not need a judge's warrant" is hype - plenty of search warrants can be signed by JP's, and some by magistrates so we already have a hundred cases in Australia of police being able to exercise similar powers "without a judges warrant"

If the author needs to play silly word games to make it sound worse than it is, then maybe they don't have much of a case to complain about. Trouble is it gets reposted again and again by people who don't understand.

And further from Wiki about the Administrative Appeals Tribunal:

The President of the AAT must be a judge of the Federal Court of Australia. The AAT's other members may be:

judges of the Federal Court or Family Court of Australia (part-time Deputy Presidents)
lawyers of at least five years' standing, or
persons of relevant knowledge or skills.

Its so easy to debunk this crap but people just read it and get excited.......
