Yeah, can you talk more about the harness. When you use it and if you feel it's necessary in the learning stages.
I also notice you're putting the leash onto your harness. Is that easier to keep your front hand free from being tangled in the leash?
As mentioned the harness is great to take the load off on long journeys. I use a harness on my 4m when I do big upwind sails before Dw'ing. Sometimes I will sail 15-20km distance upwind before a down winder and 5+ km's out to sea. You don't want to get tired arms or cramping forearms especially for the fun bit when you come back DW. I suggest not using a harness at first, it does lock you in and remove you ability to just let go of the wing if things go south. But once you're actively doing long journeys without coming off and particularly going upwind a lot, then start looking at the harness. I do not use it for just reaching or DW'ing, only really for upwind high speed hiking.
On this session I wasn't actively using the harness I put it on the practice and get the position right (which I actually got wrong, so good that I checked before a long journey). I like to have the harness line back of centre so it helps me sheet on harder. It does mean it's harder to back off in gusts, but in general I don't like backing off in gusts so it's good to be fully committed and just sail higher and faster.
Leash, yes, even when I am not using a harness I wear a waist board leash and attach my Wing leash to that also. So much better! When the leash is on your arm it gets flung around as your arm moves and pumps (and I pump very aggressively), on your waist either through a harness or waist leash it hardly moves at all. I also does help keep it out of the way quite a bit a reduce leash tangles. I will sometimes wear the waist band and just my wing leash I am choosing not to wear a board leash (which I 100% do not recommend!!!! Your board sails away from you very fast and is hard to catch swimming with a wing).

JB,
Regarding your tips for going upwind in your recent video, I was surprised you held the wing quite vertical (and even pulled it into the rail). I've asked for advice elsewhere and people have said to hold the wing over your head a bit and try and keep the foil flat, opening your shoulder to the upwind direction. I had been trying something closer to your technique, but leaning into the wind a bit, trying to get up apparent wind.
I've had light wind lately so I've been using a giant 2400 foil wing, so I can't wait to try a faster foil and see what happens with my upwind capabilities. Currently can hold ground with the 2400 wing and use the same entry/exit point, but not making any huge gains upwind.

Hey MAF,
here is lots of theories, but I work on the basis that is I can maximise my forward thrust from the Wing-Surfer by having it as vertical as possible and effectively "closing the gap" with the water and board. This presents as much sail area as possible to the wind angle without producing unwanted lift upwards (because once you're up and foiling, speed will produce the lift you need to stay on the foil). The faster you go forwards the more lift that is produced by the foil.
Now if you cant the board over a tad to windward, the uplift of the foil then also becomes upwind lift that starts working against the downwind pull of the sail/wing resulting in drive. Especially in light conditions, the more pressure you can put against the Sail/Wing, the more drive you will get, therefore going faster and resulting in more lift and then drive and then so on. This way you can go upwind at crazy speeds in very little wind at ridiculous angles. The first step is speed, the faster you go the better.
I am sure you can go upwind slower and with good height with the wing over head too, but you definitely can't go as fast and you;re feather the wing all the time so as not to over foil.
Hope this helps,
Ride safe,
JB

Love the vids
Keep them coming. Why do you use such a short mast?
Hey LouD,
I actually usually use an 80cm mast, but at the moment I am testing a new mast for next season, and it is a 75cm. Funnily enough I am really getting used to it. Also the Lake is very shallow, and even with 75cm I hit the bottom and get slammed a few times
.

Kites use this technique to get rediculus angles to the wind.

Exactly. I might not be going this quick though

My first flight with the foil and wing and I am loving it!
I had tried a couple of times with the mountainboard and Storm Dennis hit the UK hard so thought it was time to try the wing on the water. It did not disappoint. I cannot wait to try again and keep practising. Turns are my next focus. I tried a couple but not enough commitment. My weaker side needs to become more comfortable. Another way to keep the foil addiction going! My wife isn't happy!

There's something to be said for a company whose videos constantly feature the main people in the company. Not only the main bearded man Patrice but also Diane the Office Manager and Marine the webmaster. There must be a company policy that you have the passion for the sport to get the job ![]()
The videos are always top notch as is the foiling. Looking forward to seeing the Gong Accounts Manager and the Cleaner in the next video
I'm sure they'll rip!
I'm generally impressed by the whole Gong philosophy and the reviews of the products are mainly very good. And the pricing for a European product is very competitive. Not to mention the range of products they bring out.
Was thinking, where's the Australian equivalent of Gong?
And further thinking, how come New Zealand has some of the best foil designers and manufacturers in the world, three of them! Axis, Armstrong and JShapes?? Who do we have in Australia???

I agree drsurf about gong going about their business, less talk and more action and it shows how good thier products are from all their vids but I'm not sure about the quality as I never had a gong. I like their boards and it sux they don't send to oz.

Yes, basically Patrice looks for people with personal qualities that will make great team members, whatever the future will hold. Diane for instance was an avid surfer when she was hired, and eagerly try her hand then at the various other facets.
They are 21 in the team now but they should be at least 30 to handle the current volume of sales. There are around 10 open positions I think now. Check them if you are interested, "available positions" at the end of their web pages.
JEG, their low prices are made by cutting the middlemen with the direct sales, and also designing all their products and the way they are built. Alas, they are from time to time robbed from their manufacturing innovations by brands part of big financial groups that lobby/bully factories into not work anymore with Gong once Gong have made all the work to teach the factory new manufacturing methods, and reap the benefits. This is actually the opposite of the preconception of cheap brands imitating the R&D of expensive ones. They must also constantly innovate on the production methods, as making 300 quality boards a month cannot be done the same way you make 30 boards a month.
But it seems to me that you have also passionate quality teams in OZ: Sunova, One, ...

I have held off posting pubically the below but there is no satisfactory onging solution going direct.
A few locals, including me, have Gong kites and windwings.
What is putting us off is the delivery cost inconsistencies even for the same customer.
For example , similar sized product delivery ranges from 65? to ?120.
In my instance a 9m kite was close to half the price of a 5m Windwing.
To there credit after a lot of to and fro and receiving pathetic generic responses I receive a ?40 refund loosing ?15 in foreign exchange.
My friends do not expect any warranty as not practical.
In the last few days a friend wanted an 8m strutless, and quoted ?110 delivery where as only a few weeks ago bought a 10 strutless kite at ?65 delivery.
The excuses are pathetic and friend is now not proceeding at ?110 delivery.
Unlike me he is not communicating further as many will not.
Colas maybe you can pass on these concerns and get some sensible consistent delivery costs as currently it's doing damage for furter sales and good will.
I have recently bought 2 windwings locally.

Hi warwickl.
I import quite a bit of gear from Germany and for a small one or two item delivery at the price you quoted you are getting a very good price from Gong at 65 Euro. 110 to 120 Euro is what I am paying for a similar delivery no matter how much I complain. And this is from a decent sized company which I would assume has negotiated a good wholesale contract with Fedex, DHL etc.
I also import goods from Asia and NZ and it's a similar price pro rata.
I think the shipping companies price Australia high because they can and we are forced to take it. Sort of an Australia tax.
You can get a better deal per item if you are shipping in quantity but for one off items it costs.
However good old Australia Post can often provide a very competitive price if you are shipping something back to Europe ![]()
But then again Australia owns Australia Post... at present. Would hate to think of the rates for parcel post if the Govt sold Australia Post off to a multinational ![]()
My point is the extreme inconsistency in delivery pricing more than the price itself .
Also the way of handling the issue when questioned.
Atleast I raised the issue while others are now reluctant to buy again and say nothing.

Managed to get out for a quick session this afternoon on the new 4.6m MKii. Even after being spoilt on the mighty 6m, I have to say, there is something in riding the 4m wings. So light and nimble. Even in the super light stuff, with decent pumping technique I could easily get up and was foiling through the lulls on a super gusts Lake session. Still loving the 4m's ![]()

I've had quite a few questions as to the wind strength during the session as it looks quite light in the video (which it was).
During this time Lake Macquarie Obs had the Wind range between 7-16kn. Norah Head was 13-21kn. Nobby's was 17-23kn.
I have been stating the wind strength as the odd 20kn gust, but mainly around 15kn at first then dropping to around 10-15kn towards the end of the session (this is when the video was taken - at the end). Probably pretty accurate given the actual Obs at the time. Pretty amazing for a tiny Wing like - 3.6m
Such a fun fast easy Wing.
Ride safe,
JB
