Any idea of when & where the next Aussies are being held.
I've heard it's in WA, but nothing further than that.
It'd be nice to be able to plan ahead.
Amazing that we can get a round of the titles in SA with only one wave event and no wavesailing association, clubs or other events.
Maybe a west coast event might fit the bill. Novembers a blowey month over that way I hear
Hi Russ,
Just ask the AWA in SA... they'll tell you what a fantastic job they do!
I reckon Robe would be the go. Maybe around January when the sea-breeze kicks in pretty consistently. Its a much better time to be holding a comp down there than at Easter like we have been doing for the last 30 odd years.
Pretty funny if it is in SA, considering no-one here seems to know about it... where would we be without Windsurfing SA/AWA!!!
Muzza
Hey Mr Plod,
Robe varies from small slop to mast high side-off perfection!
I guess it's like most good wave-sailing spots, its good at the right time of the year and its crap at the wrong time of the year.
As far as an SA comp location, it'd think it was about the best option.
Have you been to Robe?
It would be good to find out when where etc, as I would be keen as mustard to head down and see the experts in action.
west coast though - I am sure the Pt Lincoln crew would be tuned into some good wave locations between lincoln and Streaky - they might just want top keep them to themselves - plus everyone can do a meet the white pointer trip to dangerous reef!
Maybe on the Ausssie day weekend when the tunaramas on!
we went down a few years back, didnt really fire. All the fisherman said it was the wrong time of year. What is the best time?
I had heard wa was on again this year
I went to Robe in '89 for the nationals they were held in early feb and we enjoyed some epic wind and waves It's a top spot or at least was back then .
Yeah, I heard it was WA as well... who knows!
I think the best time to go to Robe is January/February when the seabreezes kick in.
I've had a couple of really good sessions of logo high and solid side shore winds there at that time of the year. But I've also had some ordinary trips down there as well.
I've heard from others that they've had mast high with side off wind at different times of the year.
I'd be happy to have the Aussie's at Gero or somewhere similar where the chances of having good conditions are more likely.
you would have to hold it in september or something there wouldn't you. and i don't think many people would be happy about holding a comp there,,..
would be sweet though
Who actually makes the call as to where it is??
I had a little bit to do with this years titles early on..
Our plan was to run in in Vic, we just got the Windsurf Vic president involved and he spoke to who ever at AWA and said sweet just do it!
We farted around talking to moron after moron at the local councils re permits etc at all sorts of locations in Vic before John came to the party and said hey you guys help us organize it and we will have it in Marrawah and that was that...
I'm not sure who makes the decisions for windsurfing in Australia.
Considering I haven't had any answers to emails sent to the AWA and no-one on here seems to know where or when it is, its a very good question... who does make the decisions? who is planning for the future growth of windsurfing? What does the AWA do?
I've even received an email from an AWA rep saying that he has no interest or motivation for windsurfing!!!
The future is looking very grim for windsurfing, at least on the competition side of things!
The last I heard the AWA was actually folded, and the running of the nationals was soley the responsibility of the individual state associations, which in my opinion is a hell of alot more productive than the old way. This would have happened 4 years ago ( Matt can you confirm as I think you were at the meeeting in question)and all the nationals since have been well run.
Personally I agree with the AWA rep (in a way), If you have no passion for the sport, the sport is better off with out you.
You're right the sport 'would' be better without a rep with no passion for it. Unfortunately he is still the rep.
The idea of state associations organizing nationals is fine, if each state has its own association. South Australia doesn't have anything apart from a handful of people organizing a few Speed events and 2 or 3 people trying to start up 'one design' racing.
Apart from that we have the longest running wave event in Australia organized by one of the retailers, but no association as such.
who is this " representative??" just put initials if you want to be descrete, if its who Im thinking, he said 4 years ago he was disbanding the awa as he wasnt interested anymore. Maybe SA needs an association. I personally think having the title run by the individual assocs is good as it puts abit of pride back into running the event which should be the premium comp in australia in theory
Hey Dan,
I'm not going to start a slanging match by naming people on here. That won't achieve anything.
Really I just wanted to know where the Wave Nationals are being held. It blows me away that midway through the year and no-one knows anything, or at least their not sharing the info.
I have began discussions regarding getting more events (and a state titles) for the wavesailors in SA. It may happen eventually.
Maybe its time for a new and proactive association be set up on both a national and states basis!
hey joel,
I agree. If the other states are unable to organise it this year, lets just go back to Marrawah. It's such a superb place. Time to see if any reps from state associations want to put their hand up. If not, we can perhaps start sussing out with John Pott again.
cheers,
Andy
I have posted a breakdown of what the AWA does on the general forum.
I'm really glad that this topic has been raised.
It is high time that wave sailing enthusiasts got involved at a club and/or State level to develop one of the best disciplines of windsurfing.
Wave sailing has a dismal or non-existent representation on State Committees.
This is the main reason that it is so difficult to pin down times and dates for important events like Nationals.
NSW for example has a Wave Association/Club that runs a very successful Wave series. They also have a active member on the NSW Windsurfing Committee. As a result everyone on the NSW Committee is active in the part of windsurfing that they are most interested in, but is aware of all other aspects of the sport also.
Bottom line is that if your State Association has no wave representative then you can hardly expect a Speed or Slalom sailor to organize and run a wave events for you.
Please, become part of the solution to make windsurfing the most enjoyable, diverse sport that we can all enjoy. A least join a club/State, or get involved with a State committee to support the aspect of the sport you care about.
Brett Morris
AWA President.
Oops , now Im confused. I thought we were talking about the now defunct Australian Wavesailing Association, this was the assoc that organised the national titles each year
Dan and others,
I have an idea thats better than the aussy titles thats been dead for years. Most states still currently run an event each year thats pretty successful. SA has the robe comp at easter (this years conditions may have been the best ever). NSW has merimbula and WA has lancelin. Have a national points system that at the end of the year the aussie title awarded by the comps combined. That way it encourages competitive people to go to multiple events, making the sport stronger. The events are more spread across the year which makes travelling more easy.
What do you think?
Strange how things go off on a tangent. Seems like I've ruffled some feathers with the AWA. I don't think I'll lose too much sleep over that one!
If there's nothing in place for the nationals, I reckon going back to Tassie sounds like an awesome plan.
Hey Scotty,
That actually sounds like an awesome idea!
You could add a Tassie event and it would be a great circuit.
I'm not sure what Qld and Vic are doing, but if they have something aswell... what a great concept.
Cheers,
Muzza
To get government funding for a national titles is different to getting funding for a state based event. The funding for nationals is much better. At least that's the way it works in Tasmania. There are dollars needed to run a good event and advantages to having a single national title. We do need a date and location for next nationals and some firm commitments from which ever state association is putting their hand up.
Maybe for the SA crew it's time we put the feelers out to get something happening on the wave front - any ideas. I'm sure a couple of events would attract a few takers - need to involve juniors and women
Keen to be involved in some capacity just not sure how you kick it off.
