Other than the Beacon race, which I think is awesome, I'd just be happy to race around a triangle course... if only there was an easy way to just throw a few markers out, convince a few people back on the beach to join in an informal race.... bragging rights as trophy....
It's hard enough getting a few people together for a normal session, let alone a race..... so a grass roots race I think is best.... spur of the moment....
Not hard to convince a few people if they see you and a few of your mates racing around some buoys for fun......
The minute you start going down the impotent road of insurance and risk... it kills it off.... making simple fun stuff complex is also another way to kill things....
Use the gear you have, keep it organic, keep it real - it works.
Just remember its windsurfing..... there is about ten of us......... the greater world don't care...... on the risk scale.... people don't even know windsurfing is still around....
Now to work out the buoy solution.................................?
It's the kind of thing I was thinking also Kurt. But don't even worry about the bouys. Jman and myself started racing up to the Brighton Marina or Kite Beach from Pookipa last few sessions of the season and it was a lot of fun. With a larger group it would be even better. From memory there is a marker just outside the Marina, or a little upwind of it. Gybe or tack around that and then downwind back to pookipa. I was doing it previously for upwind practice but it turned into a bit of a race I think. Hopefully next season it catches on with more of the regular guys. Very casual, easy to organise, etc. GPS's optional.
Yeah, how popular is the B2B each year. A lot of fun. More of those would be great.
Green Island is over for another year. Five full days of racing in winds gusting over 30 knots. Well done to the organisers who managed to fit in nine full tables of slalom racing and five freerace events. This is an event not to be missed if you're into blasting on slalom gear. Hopefully we can get a few sailors from Vic there next year.
It sounds like there was great wind! If you guys can order up 20-25 knots of wind for next year as well, I could be very tempted to save up and head up. Bugger, its a long drive though............. Can't afford airplanes.... and I will be wanting to bring more than the minimum allowed racing gear to try out the full variety of cruising and a bit of speed sailing on the outer reefs with Dr Cam!
(Note to self; remember to pack the leg armor. OTOH, I can leave the shark repellant at home...can't I?
)
I think you may need to change the racing rules for old farts like me though. I need to have exactly the right size sail and board in any conditions or I am useless! ![]()
