If the wind plays the game tomorrow there will probably be a few punters at Turner's Camp. This arvo was hard work, but Adam and Dag did a heap of km and JV Jonno got on the water a bit later like I did with Jeff showing up really late to do a bit of bobbing around while the wind dropped out for the evening.
Dear me, it was pretty windy at Turner's this arvo. Dag and myself got there around 1pm and it was already over 20. I expected 15-20 this arvo so committed the rookie mistake and didn't put the 5.5m sail in. I pulled my 6.5 down as hard as I could and had one session that was out of control some of the time, fully lit and in control some of the time. Pretty rough water so I waited to see if it got more civilized and called it a day when the wind just blew stronger. Dag went out with a 5m sail and got flogged half to death by the chop and retired hurt too. JV Jonno was rigging up for a blast as I left and Adam didn't bother rigging at all. Little bit of carpark carnage too, Jonno's board blew off the ground into a post still in it's bag and dinged it and my board cartwheeled sideways a few times across the grass, luckily Adam and myself stopped it somehow before it hit a post and my car. Crazy day indeed!
Golden Pond started ok with 6.5 from about 11 am till 12 then it was down to a 5.0. Choppy in places but plenty of flat water if you tacked occasionally instead of gybing to line up the banks. 26.2 knots best speed ![]()
I'm at Cotton tree caravan park and there's good news and bad news. I now have a 4.5 for those windy days on the foil. The bad news is I left it at home. (Hey Adam, what do you bring?) so I went out on the foil with the 5.2 and It was 20 + by the time I rigged. I got smashed about and slapped around, attempted orbit and re-entry a few times and after a total of less than two kms decided to put the tal between the legs and give up. I threw the weed fin in just in case but had forgotten to alter it to fit the board with the new bottom plate so I couldn't even go out for a normal sail. Oh well, thems the breaks. Looks Like I wasn't on my own.....
Didn't retire hurt. Kept doing a few more very short sessions at a time. Current fitness was well and truly exceeded yesterday.
High tide at that place in that sort of wind is just so messy. If it was low tide today there would have been some very fast run's.
J.V. Johnny kicked ass today on his skinny board. I am very sore, and very tired after a lame 22 K's.
Plywood boy, i held on to my 8m cheetah n IMCO long enough to clock 25.7kts.
Retired the F1 with gear failure. Andrew
I went to Wello and had a great time on 5.6 and 150 carve. Bounced around like a cork. Honour restored after last month. Achieved one proper pivot jibe and swam for the others, but did lots of water starts in very choppy conditions. Good day in all... I got out too early: there were about 15 boarders and 15 kiters still in when I left. Will probably go back there tomorrow.
Very happy - a good afternoon on water
Actually VERY EXCITED - normally these conditions are only for surviving and getting totally trashed in
more than survived my quick after work session - smashed it - rough water, gusty conditions ....just wanted to keep going but the daylight let me down ;-)
bring on summer
cheers Jeff
I really want to try Turners on lower tide for the reduced chop, will keep hitting here and join the locals one day so I keep my fin in the box.
Good stuff, I thought you were pulling the pin Dag, JV must have got you keen. It would be easier to sail your rig back to the carpark than carry it in that wind.
Hi There Sandstoners I am trying to find some info on travel times along bribie road in peak times Monday to Friday from the Caboolture overpass to Bongaree. If there are any locals among you I would really appreciate any info.
Thanks in advance.
ps
my wife may have to work out there next year.
I think I used to allow 15 - 20 min's mate, but that was a long time ago. The road is a lot better now.
I'd still guess the same.
Thanks for the feedback, yep she will be out there next year. I said she could sail across but it didn't go down to well![]()
See you all on the water again one day. I still need to try Bongaree.
You lady's missed out on a perfect arvo at turners camp! Dags and I both had grins from ear to ear. See you all Tomorrow if all your ironing and vacuumings been done! ![]()
That was a great laid back sail on the big board and altered fin.
Where was everyone?
Ironing and vacuuming of course...
Hello Queenslanders we coming up for September with sups and windsurfers. At home in vic we do not wear life jackets. Do we need to wear them? Boy 12 daughter 11, 8 , 5. The younger 2 do wear them but the others don't any more your thoughts on 11 and 12 year old without life jackets. Are we going to get fined?
Beautiful, but changing day at South Esplanade yesterday. Big turnout (by our standards) of 10 sailors hoping to make the most of a consistent 18kn+ southerly that slowly dropped off to 15kn as it swung around to the east. Very long, fast runs over extremely shallow banks but only 0.4m on the 1300 low so you had to get into it quickly as most fins were hitting as the tide dropped. I quickly discovered that Adam wasn't waving at me just to be friendly when I cartwheeled over the front as my 48cm fin hit the sand. Rule of thumb here is to use a fin size that is less then the Brisbane Bar tide height. The big compression waves in the passage were so much fun to carve off the top when the tide was running, but then when it smoothed out as the run slowed, Pete was able to get out on his foil for some more practice on it. I took off home just after the low, but a few of the boys were rigging bigger sails to make the most of the lighter pressure and making tide so I don't know how they got on later in the arvo. Classic Bribie arvo though, happy days ![]()
Didn't have time to go to Bribie, so I went to Manly instead.
Low-Medium winds and lots of tacks and jibes in steep waves.
Can always depend on Manly for chop.
Not quite enough wind to maintain a plane for long, but good practice.
