Thanks for helping with the scores Dave
Note GPS analysis was done by me, AI, and used KML track point data. I believe it's close enough given the prize pool.

Yesterday the crew at Marmong point sailing club hosted round two of the New South Wales Slalom series launching off Coal Point but racing behind a sandbar one and a half kilometres across Lake Macquarie at Swansea.

At noon the summer SeaBreeze started to kick in rising quickly from 8 kn to 18 and by the time the course was set it looked like a solid 15 to 20 knit summer NE had set in.
With the course set, racing was scheduled to start at 1:30 and everyone went out with a mix of gear from 4.5 m wave sails and large Foils all the way up to 6.5 7.0 or 7.3 m sails with foils from 720 phantom, 900-550 Starboard, 1000 axis, down to 560CA and 540 F4 GP. On the fins the guys were riding 7.7 to 8.2m sails on the large slalom boards.

But then of course as soon as we started race one the wind dropped and it was more like 8 to 12 kn and a struggle to get going. The wind slowly increased over the seven races finishing above 20 kn with some rather hairy gybe rpounding's, as the swell increased, and came wrapping around the point.

Most of us were just doing lazy beach starts and I never really challenged the line. I was unfortunately often 5 to 30 seconds late which didn't help my finishing positions. Just relying on speed is not a good strategy.

Most memorable moment for me was one of my rare good starts and coming out of gybe. I found myself in second place just behind Remi on his fin between the marks was slightly upwind and I sheated in hard and was just able to roll Remi to the next buoy. Rounding in first I felt confident I could win this one. My last gybe went in strong but I took a bit longer to recover after riding some awkward swell and took a few seconds too long to get back in the straps and settled in, accelerating and looking over my shoulder I saw that Remi had had a nicer gybe and he caught back up and was level with me and up wind and so the drag race to the pin was on. The subtle shift from slightly up wind to slightly down wind helped Remi. We we're both pushing with everything we had and by the time we crossed the line Remi was in front by a few centimetres, stealing my only real chance at a win yesterday, but damn it was a good battle.

There were plenty of other good drag races no matter where you were in the lineup. The good thing about being late is you get the opportunity to pass people and take advantage of any mistake, be it setup, confidence, technique or random error. unless of course it is your own mistake letting others past. I did drop a few gybes unfortunately so had a mixed bag with a few seconds and thirds all the way down to last. But that's what racing is about.

After Race 6 the guys watching the clouds suggested we wrap up after the next race, as the forecast Westerly storm front was fast approaching. We all made it back across the lake with minutes to spare before the wind just switched off.

Shout out to MPSC for another great day and especially Barry and Glen for volunteering on the boat!

What a great weekend of racing! Too many memories fading fast so I've tried to share them here but the main thing to note: I was WAY TOO LATE way too often! My speed helped me close gaps but not win enough! I really should pay more attention to my video. how2win.

Day 1
Started light even for my 8.1m CHS but I risked it and went out with 540 Wahoo while Byron chose 620 CA F4 and 7.5m sail and Muzz on 720 Phantom and his favourite 7.5 Duotone as well.

Race 1 and Laken could bounce his North ha550 (5.5m PPC) around well to finish in front for a well deserved win, ahead of Byron, me and Muzz

Race 2 with a poor start for me in the mid fleet. By half way Nick was in front and gybing wide at the 2nd mark. I thought I could fit inside but as he flipped he stalled and not just stop, but pivot upwind closing the door! I slammed on the brakes and dropped into the very fresh water backwards to avoid damaging our gear. Byron, Muzz Remi, Nick and Laken all finished ahead.

Byron won races 2 to 6 and they all blurred together.

Race 3 was the best result for young Kelson in 3rd riding 4.8 North wing and matching ha850! Races 4 & 5 were best for Muz getting two seconds behind Byron.

I think it was race 6 that I was hunting Byron but he stayed in front by a few cm.

After 4 races the wind shifted and we had a break to reset. But the lulls were still quite hollow despite the peaks filling in. Most of us decided to stay on the same gear.

Then race 7 and I finally got to the start on time. It makes a big difference and really does and so does not falling in or dropping a sail at the gybes. On the run for the first mark I think Remi was in front of me. There was a lot of noise above me. I was early so I had to dip down to make sure I wasn't over early and there was a lot of people on time for that one. Everybodys starts were also getting better and so I had to push hard to get ahead of a few for gybe 1. The wind was honking and it was a struggle to sheet-in fully! I was chasing Remi up to the next Mark and on the second gybe I got in front of him and then I think he edged back in front of me and Byron caught up from behind. He was above me just behind me and so I thought well stuff you Byron. I am going to choose my own line as I steered clear of Remi because he might stall and he did and then he pumped up quickly and I had a little bit of a wobbly wide gybe and Byron had to go around me so he was even wider and deeper. I got in front of Remi early and I could hear him clamouring by my ear, board slapping on the ripples as Byron was out the back door. I heard Remi yell something and I can't tell you what it was but it might've been like "bloody light wind" - he later said he was sailing on eggshells barely planning to the line. It was a little weird on the course, it felt like we were sailing up wind whichever direction you were going. I was so happy to win a really challenging race. so much so that Muz said "Jeez mate looks like you just won the World Cup!"

Race 8 and I think I rounded in 2nd. but my metal fatigued free fall safety harness hook released and I had to finish the race with no harness . already fatigued myself!! Last leg and Nic was closing. so I muscled up and sheeted in just to make sure I crossed 3rd! Byron and Remi fighting every gybe and reach all the way to the line ahead of me.

Day 2
Layday. No wind. Few went out for a blast or plod. 1150 pump foils were the best choice!

Day 3

So race 1 and with light winds at the start most of us were late! On his WingFoil Laken was able to pump up and was in front of us all and made it clear the whole way around in front for a relatively easy win.he seems to like winning the first race of each day. He was followed by Arkos on borrowed gear and Tibor for a podium finish! The ability of the larger foils to fly in lighter winds definitely helped in this race. Remi and I couldn't even finish as the light winds were to low to make the pin.

Race 2 and I had a much better start. My 7.1 CHS felt right with the F4 GP 540 and I rounded just behind Byron at Gybe 1 where Remi stalled with Laken in the mix. Byron went wide to avoid while I went inside but slowed up saying "you can't park there mate" finding the foil easier to pump up with momentum. Byron was in front on leg 2 but he was a little undercooked on 6.4 Duotone and 560 F4. As I rolled Byron I yelled out "7m power" just as a taunt. Apparently I'm "very chatty on the course"! From there on the race was mine and I finished nearly half a leg ahead of Laken, Byron and Remi.

Race 3, much stronger winds now and the course reset.
Remi and I were a bit late but Remi did well with more power. maybe too much even for him on 8.2 Loft and 85cm wide FMX slalom board and 44 fin.
Byron was chasing Laken for the win. good chase down the last leg at about 28knots (PB?) and bam he blew up 50m to the line.. Letting me (Berowne) take third, while Remi had a hell of a run to the pin in strong winds and beat Byron by a board length.

Race 4 with plenty of wind - so much so that Remi, Nick went in to change and a few retired. On the race course the boat called a new start and I was a lot early so headed downwind to the pin slowly. Crossing on time at half speed I accelerated to merge with the pack at gybe 1, I came out chasing Laken, with Byron close. At the second gybe Laken was just in front and took a tight gybe so I went around wide as usual but just as I was hooking back in, Byron flipped his rig 5cm from my face! "Fark Off" I yelled in panic, red mist setting my blood to boiling! Flipping Byron the bird I yelled out "you lamb chop!" Since as we frequently say. we are not racing for sheep stations. He apologised later saying he had a big gap but got a wobble and went wider than expected.
Leaving Byron I chased Laken and rolled him with 20m to go before the last gybe. He was 1m behind and below me so I called out "My mark! Im going inside!" Just to let him now as I tipped my rig over the buoy and did a beaut gybe, coming out in front. On the last reach 50m to the line I thought I was safe and was focused on safe speed. seeing Laken 10m or so behind BUT I didn't realise that Byron was pushing hard, peaking 30kt in the race as his smaller 6.4 turned to an advantage but I saw him coming and accelerated, finishing a board length in front at the boat as he crossed at the pin.

Given the thinning fleet, and desire for some to start heading home, racing ended during the next break instead of continuing.

Ian rode his starboard 900 and 800 on 95 fuselage and 7m sail well and was proud to finish all the races.

Big thanks to our volunteers; Glen Wright, Lindsey Auston, Michael Eaton on the boat, and Dave Howe for scoring. Also a shout out to Dave from Kite n Sup for helping out with good gear for about half the fleet.

Next race 31/January or 1/Feb 2026 for the season finally.
