Can't wait! I have done a surprising lack of training this winter... hopefully September changes that!
Looking forward to catching up with the crew!
What's needed to enter? Membership? Sailing Club affiliate? Sail number?
Keen for Jimmy's beach!
Can you share more info about the venue? Is there parking spot or camping for van available?
Thanks,
Matteo
Great to hear you're keen to join us Matteo. Yes you'll need to join up with a club (like ours!) then register for the events. Look forward to seeing you.
Reflections Holiday Park has camping right next to the launch spot, but can be popular so recommend to book in advance.
Online Registration for the 2025-26 series is now open!

While you're there, it's a great time to renew your Marmong club membership, or join us for the first time.
Hi Matteo, and any other friends keen to join the fun
If you haven't raced much or before here are some tips...
1. A semi-serious guide to racing:
Great guys thanks for the infos! Keen to join! Last question: what's wind to expect usually? And most important, proper upright fin or weed fin is required?!?
thanks!!
Hi Matteo. Both hawks nest and myall lakes can be sailed with a normal upright fin. But if you're driving up you should pack a weedie as there are other great spots where there's some weed.
wind will be either Seabreeze (north easterly) or cold front (southerly).
Here's a YouTube version.
Wow where's the nor easter's gone? This time last year we were half way through the sailing season.
This one is later. I sense a super summer season coming!
Check ya ropes people, dust off that harness, stretch up, opening to season 2025 is about to go bang!

I'm living at Jimmy's, still just figuring it out really, here's my advice.
Typically Jimmy's will have a moderate nor easter. You'll look at the big blue flat bay and think it is 5kts, but it will be 15kts.
Marine rescue Port Stephens have a tower with wind observations, i find it easiest to access via willy weather, port stephens, and make sure i'm on that station.
But don't let that fool you either, it might say 25kts, but Jimmy's 25kts is different. I'm not sure why, maybe wind shadows from dunes or something, but i use much bigger gear here than anywhere else for same strength wind. Take off like 25% of the wind speed i'd say.
Seabreeze Bennetts beach is what i find the best for forecasts.
Volume is definitely your very good friend here, and big fins.
I'm 70kg and often ride Formula board to get into the flat water up close to the spit at the eastern end. It is probably one of the best places in the world for boards like that. Whatever can get you closer to the sand spit at the eastern end is where the flat is. Foils will have no problem getting in there and gliding through the holes.
90ltr board is ok out wide in more wind, but there's more chop there. I'm enjoying 120ltr here lately with big weed fin.
It's crystal clear deep water, but sometimes the odd bit of ribbon weed can lift with currents and might grab pointers.
It's rare that i use smaller than my Ezzy Lion 6.5 sail here.
Very experienced sailors might be fine on smaller kit if strong, but i still struggle on smaller stuff here.
As James said, if it's a southerly, then that's way different, small gear and chop skills needed.
Camping - yep, Reflections Jimmy's beach will be where most sailors stay. You can walk down to launch spot from there, super nice spot. Be aware there are two Reflections in Hawks Nest, one is over by main beach, one is at Jimmy's.
Mungo brush national park is 20mins up the road and nice camping too. White Tree bay or the Wells can be good launch spots for sailing the lake.
Parking at Jimmy's will be tight and does require a walk of gear about 120m to water line. This is from the caravan park launch spot where the crew had the briefings last year, and where all sailed from for the event. Small gear struggles to get out from wind shadow there.
There are other launch spots aswell if needed.
I got a permit from council to drive on the beach, you need a dr to write you a letter to recommend beach access based on some physical ailment. $110 bucks, need a proper 4x4, 12psi tyres and some very good soft sand driving skills. I'm not recommending that option to people visiting as it's alot to figure out, just saying that's how i do it, and how about 500 kiters have been doing it each season lately
Next best option would be 'the fish shower'. Along the road heading to Winda Woppa, you'll see a big dirt parking area, that's decent in a NE. Or anywhere further along Winda Woppa, the western end traveling along the Boulevard, the sailing line is good heading out to the spit from there but rigging space out there is hard. Wings and smaller gear go well from Winda Woppa as there is less wind shadow there.
Renting a house at winda woppa would be nice, a few sailors do this throughout the year. Leave gear rigged and sail from out the front yard really.
The sailing area can be accessed from all these spots. Heck, experienced sailors can even access it coming from the other side, Shoal Bay. But ask Byron how that looks in strong wind, too scary for me.
In short, it look's like this ![]()

Hey MobZ!!!
The spot looks epic!! I'm excited!! I booked a spot at Reflections for the next weekend, hopefully the wind will cooperate!!! Otherwise I will just enjoy the spot and the nature, also will be super fun to meet new sailors up there!!! I'll bring all camera toys, planning to get good footage!!!
See you soon!!
Ciaoooo,
Matteo
Good plan Matteo. It's hard to take a bad picture at Jimmy's, your camera toys will be happy i'm sure.

Are Myall Lakes open again yet?
It's been closed for months at least for camping ( except Boomeri.)
I just went up there today, nope. All spots in the national park except for Mungo boat ramp, Angophora and Myall Shores are shut.
It's all still fenced off. Super weird and sad that they've just locked it up after a storm.
I had a few extra days leave so came up to Nelson Bay early. Got 2 sails in 2 days in epic conditions up here! Friday I'm taking a rest day ahead of the comp. Looking forward to a few great races in a lovely part of the world.
Forecast getting better and better!
15 people registered so far, but still plenty of space for everyone on the start line. should be a great weekend.
If you haven't already, please pre-register via our website

Hey all, I've been working on a Garmin app that provides speed and alpha alerts as you sail and shows your max values in Connect in the Stats tab. Might come in handy for the GPS events. Here's the link: apps.garmin.com/apps/844a186e-f5fa-479f-a78b-bb34a6d6b213
Have an awesome weekend!

Look for things to improve on the myalls once the dredging at the river mouth is finished.
That would have been one of the best bad days here ever. Ultra light SE, suuuuuper long runs through the bay. Like sailing in no wind, warm.
Today will be a different world altogether, big dogs gonna battle on the dream course, Jimmy's 2025 !

What a beaut part of the world and a great crew of racing and sailing enthusiasts. Lots of GoPro, Drone, video and photos to come!
Jimmy's Beach Race weekend.
Saturday presented a light onshore SE about 4 to maybe 12 knots briefly. GPS was the call & the fleet went out for two 30 minute GPS sessions.
2 sec Max & Alpha followed by an even lighter 500m & total distance.
Reminder: Everyone needs to upload their GPS tracks to KA72.com.
The vibe on the water was great with everyone hunting for a gust, flying past anyone that missed it. Gybes were hard but I managed a 17kt alpha while Byron did one at 19 knots, standing so far back he nearly ran out of board trying to keep his foil airborne. It will be interesting to see how everyone did for these 4 scores!
Sunday was epic. The offshore NE looked like 12 kts at 12:30 but was actually 18 kts, perfect for Fin or Foil or Wing.
The Gear
This is not the PWA. No one is riding a full quiver of new kit, it's a matter of ride what you have and race your mates in ideallic locations.
I was on my F4 Wahoo 540 & 7.1 CHS, while Byron his F4 CA 620 / 560 foils & 6.5 Duo. Muz rode a Phantom (720?), 8.5 Duotone, while Remi was often out in front on medium FMX board & 8.2 Loft.
A few iQ riders like Justin (full Patrik iQ), Ben also on 900 Starboard foil & 7.8m while Kevin rode 800 front foil on some friendly advice with his "small" 8.0m severne, having left his 6m sail at home.
Wings were noticeably lacking with just Laken who rode a North Foil & 5.5m/5.0m wing. Pat came out on his new F4 Orca and parawing for a blast but wasn't racing.
Elsewhere Nick, Ric, Russell, Matteo, and Ian rode Fin & Tibor, James, Kev, Jeff, Mick & Nathan were also there on foils.
The Racing
My day started well, with race 1 where I was right there as the green flag, went up, chasing Remi around the 1st mark, closing up in the 2nd phase of the gybe. Leg 2 was flat out, drag race to the mark & Remi was only a touch faster. The second gybe was almost perfect, but I put my rear back foot too far over to windward & the whole board slipped onto its edge & half the fleet got past as Remi powered away for the first of many wins!
There were some great drag races over the day. I passed Muz by milliseconds but couldn't catch Kevin in one race. After a slow last gybe I caught Remi as he pumped up onto the plane. so I yelled out "common Remi, Send It!" And we were flat out to the line, Remi gaining a few metres overtaking me with better speed. I know the foil had more speed, but I couldn't hold it!
Towards the end of the day, I turned the last gybe & found myself pumping up to speed next to Nick on his 7.7 black sail and fin. I could have relaxed into the fatigue and held station, but the race adrenaline took over & it was on. Nick headed for the pin so I aimed 2m upwind & went for it, covering him by barely a board length. Muz also had a few good drags & Remi was only ever back in the pack if he suffered a sticky gybe in a lull.
Laken had a good result on his wing with a win, making the trip from QLD well worth it. He was fast on the straights but not quite as fast as the fleet leaders, he admitted. His grin ran from ear to ear.
Matteo had a few great starts with his insta-360 at risk of sending him over early. See the shots above.
Misadventure
But it wasn't all fine champagne sailing. Being an offshore breeze, there was one spot near the 1st gybe that had an upward feel, making the foil rise high and loose. But just as often, I found my foil dipping as a wide leaf of seagrass grabbed hold for a short ride.
I heard Byron swearing at the weed just behind my ear in one gybe, when he was on my tail.
Another race, with an amazing start & about half the fleet crossing on zero. The first mark was crowded as I watched a foil fall, then a fin stop to avoid a crash, sending me way downwind & offline, but rounding safely.
Crash of the Day Award
Oh, & for once, I didn't get the coveted "Crash of the Day." The award goes to Kev, MAS-1, racing on the iQ 8m & 800 on a 115+10 fuselage. Well & truly overpowered, he did amazingly well until maybe race 7, where, on the 2nd leg, he was in a 3-way drag with Muz & Byron when, before he knew what happened, Kevin found himself sliding off the top of his sail, having catapulted into an amazing spray of white water.
Having not checked with the fleet, I will claim "Save of the Day." Race 9 & mid-gybe, I felt my harness hook in! With amazing reflexes, I levelled off the board to stay on angle & with the sail facing the wrong way, managed to unhook (again) & flip the rig without falling, but I did drop to the water and had to pump back up to speed. The same thing happened in the final race, but I couldn't save it and fell, leaving me last.
A big shout out to Tom & Lyndane for volunteering on the boat!!
If you have any memorable moments, feel free to share.
Looking forward to the next single race day, November 15th or 16th somewhere on Lake Mac. See you there.
Thanks for sharing all that Berowne. Classic stories of a special day.
I got some footage and when i get a minute off work (the sheep station business aka GPSTC, currently at Yamba
)
ill make an edit.
I'd like to use info like this to help make a movie appeal to a broader audience. Who were the people? What were the stories?
If anyone has any more, please share.
Oh, and results. Yeah right, i guess we need those because it was a race!
My story, Saturday: i smoked Byron in a gust. He wasn't going. And i happily yelled out when approaching from behind, on my JP SLW up on me old fanatic Flow 900 and 6.5 Ezzy probably going not more than 13kts but passing him at 10kts, "outta the way mate, big dog coming through", then Muz, Berowne, and many others while I was hunting Mr Lord but couldn't find him. Big smile stuff ![]()
Sunday: My Patrik 120ltr F-Race was struggling to get going with 6.5 in the races, although it looked windy, i couldn't feel the power. So i went in to get SLW 165ltr 92wide with 47cm carbon fin. I think it was close to 20kts by that stage, defs felt the power then
.
I had a good race on that, got off the start ok (probably could have took off in front but scared). I did one race on it then moved up to hit the flat for a few runs before going in to swap back to 120ltr. Riding a board like that in flat water is such a thrill, as many of you would know from Formula days...
I was at the back of the pack in the few races i went in which is a huge improvement over last year where i didn't come close finishing any.
I stepped out to film some from the beach and had free sailing in between with brother Mobdog upwind of the course.
I was asking on the forum awhile back about power XT ropes, Ric just handed me one at the event. Wow. Super nice that he had remembered me asking about that when i hardly know the fella. I think he was out with bad foot Sunday? Sorry to hear that. Windsurf community rocks ![]()
Super cool to meet Boffe, aka Matteo, whom clearly has an interest in film making like myself, and hopefully he doesn't mind me sharing this here, but he works for Disney. So.. expect some magic film of this to come legends! You are the stars! ![]()
Although my social interactions were brief off the water as it's allways so busy, it's still so nice to see everyone faces, put new ones to names..
Here is a sample unfinished unpublished edit. I'm thinking to make voiceover commentary and try to work in info like Berowne gave, so if you have any more good stories, share away. Go time.
