hi guys,

i went out on the fish yesterday at VP figured i'd be a team player and at least log a track this month.

sailed for 2 hour continuous, lost a couple of calusses on the hands ouch!

anyways,

downloaded the track, it was gobledegook, looks like my 101 is finally stuffed, been 3 months now with the lcd screen not working.

so figured i'd pop it in the microwave for 3 secs as i'd read on here before that moisture in the unit can cause issues.

POP!!!!

oh dear.

You never ever, put anything in a micro wave that conducts electricity well!!!!
You probably blew all the circuits and chips simultaneously

fair call guys. in hindsight it was only ever going to end in tears. but the unit was pretty much stuffed anyways.

in my defence i'm not that bad with electronics. have been known to super charge some guitar effects units in the past and have built a stereo or 2 from scratch.

i did thunk ahead this time and took the batteries out before i put it in the microwave. all was good until the 3rd second. maybe should have just used a normal oven or only 1 sec in microwave. prob lucky i didn't stuff the microwave too .

yesterday i was whipper snippering the yard and thought. i wonder if i can hook the motor up to me land sailor? I remembered the gps and thought i better not.

What frequency does a GPS use? (around 1.5 GHz)
What frequency does a microwave use? (around 2.4 GHz)

The first thing to go would be the very sensitive receiver circuitry, followed closely by the tuned aerial. This would probably have gone within 0.01 seconds of you turning it on.

It would be like listening to a 300 dB sound. It might take three seconds for your head to explode, but your ears would be fried within milliseconds...

Poor little GPS, I feel sorry for it

yes my ears are also fried from loud music. but the hughes and kettner can be turned up very loud so i don't even notice.

Not bad mate, wind's been a bit dodgy lately though.

Hopefully these weird weather patterns return to normal by the end of the week...

Did you get out today? Looks like the racing guys had a good time on the bay
