ok guys, i have been watching things closely and it seems this weekend is not going to bring the winds required.

at this stage it appears the low in the coral sea is about to vanish.

I will keep an eye on things over the coming week.

cheers JB.

Hey Gestalt,

What about Sunday? I'm not all that good at reading graphs, but a couple of sites say there might be 15 knots sneaking around the coast then...

As the advertising of the original event said it was to be held over last weekend and this one, with definate rules regarding 3 best days count etc, would it be an idea that if this weekend doesn't come off.... to cancel the event as-is, then revise the rules, dates, how winners are chosen etc under an all-new event with the same name. As there are some top (and expensive)prizes, this could stop any protests etc if winners are declared, but the rules/ conditions for the win are different from those stated in advertising. This would especially hold true if entries/fees have been collected for the event/dates as they are presently stated. Just a thought...

Hi Mikey I think Gestalt already answered this on the first page.

quote:
as we have lost the first weekend to the 2 weekend format the intention is to change the scoring system to the 5 best 10 sec runs. so competitors can use either or both days to clock their fastest times.

hi nebbian,

i am sure there will be some wind around on the weekend, but we are hoping for a good solid day of 20+ knots. at this stage things are a bit to iffy so it is better to hold off until we are certain. i am also sure we will get some wind in this range soon because of the time of year it is. at this stage there is some thoughts that next week the low may intensify again (ground hog day) . it is hard for the computer models to get it right when a sheared low/cyclone occurs because the position of the centre is hard to pin point. i found this excellent link http://www.bom.gov.au/bmrc/pubs/tcguide/ch3/ch3_2.htm
if the low doesn't intensify we may see a return to some strong trade winds (SE'ers) over the next week or 2. one thing is for sure as soon as we get some wind we will have a green light and i am checking the forecasts every 4 hours.

HI mikey100.

agreed, i posted previously to let everyone know that the scoring would be different with the best 5, 10 sec runs being calculated and that those runs could be chosen from any day of the competition once we have the green light. we also spread the word on the channel 9 news sports segment on tuesday night to try and let everyone know we had postponed until favourable winds occurred.

i don't think we need to cancel the event, then restart the event with different rules and dates. we could end up back where we started from again. typically, with these type of events that rely on weather all we can do is just pick a date when it is normally windy and then see what the day brings us. if the conditions change then we need to be flexible with the format to achieve the best outcome. i agree the advertising should change to correctly show the format. there were a couple of people who have already paid the entry fee and i will of course resolve any issues that might arise prior to kick off.

next year i think we may make the event more like a storm chasers type format. were we just say, next time we get winds over say 25 knots between a particular couple of months the event will be on. that way we can make the rules and dates more flexible from the start.

at this stage we still have the local tv crews ready to go and the local police are waiting for the next blow to join in with the radar. i'll also endeavour to give everyone as much notice as possible and keep updating with the possible start day.

cheers vando,

took me so long to wright the post by the time i had pushed the button you'd answered it simply.

Cool! So if there's enough wind on Sat. or Sun. this weekend and I get my 5x10sec, then that's the event...and anyone who doesn't go to Caloundra misses out. Bom. and Seabreeze are forcasting 15-20kts for Sunday, so I'll be there.

ok guys and girls,

the crystal ball says we should keep our eyes on next weekend, maybe a trough coming through on the 17-18 march. so hopefully we'll get the winds we're after???

we'll see how things shape up closer to the dates.

fingers definately crossed.

hi troppo

well you tried your best. the fans you pointed our way had an effect, seems to be on the weekends your neighbours must turn the damn things off while your out sailing. so it's been blowin mid week.

today was no different. because it was the weekend we only got 10-15 knots and yesterday nothin.

i reckon the winds comin though. hopefully you're bringing it with you. i can see the headlines now, cyclone troppo wreaks havoc on the goldy.

You'll recognize Troppo, he'll be the bloke wearing the new Seabreeze t-shirt and a big grin

And keep him away from the bar, or you'll get a cyclone for sure

NNNNoooooo!!!!! not the magic 8 ball...

ALL HAIL THE MAGIC 8 BALL!

should i be scared to know the answer?

these days i tend to look towards the EC and GFS. but i am sure that may change at some point. after all they predicted the cyclone we never had. and also predict another in a few weeks.

OK Gestalt you lost me.

Unless EC = Extremely clever [forecaster dude], and
GFS = Good F*n Sh!t...

Did anyone else notice how this weekend's southerly just popped up out of nowhere? OK it's time to consult the oracle:

Q: "Will it be above 15 knots for the Speed challenge this weekend?"
A: Definitely

Cripes! It's never been that certain before. I hope Huey's not reading this...
