Burrum does have good wave sailing in a good south easterly but you have to go out past the last red marker (approx 7klm offshore) and I would not call it chop. The waves don't have a great fetch but they are still as good as Gatakers Bay in a northerly at Hervey Bay. The waves are not as good as you get at Elliot Heads over the bar but still very respectable and it was always our choise if we didn't want the 1.5hr trip to Elliot. Wouldn't go out on your own as a breakage could put you at Woodgate and you might get a bit lost.
On my second sail today and out near the last red marker I acctually broke my boom. Well that was not very pleasant on my 80 turbo (sinks), with a VMG (bucket of water to water start) and a TM45 fin (way too small) and droping wind with rain squals. I floundered for a while in the water and finally got going after lashing up my broken boom with a harness line and got back to the sand bank, still 6klm out. So after I cryed for a while I decided to make my way back to Burrum and after walking for most of the way and looking at the rocks Vando hit I finally got back to the car before sun down. Not a happy day but still better than working. Will be there tomorrow again in the pm. Cheers
Thanks for the info porkchop. Too bad about your boom and the long walk.
What's this about rocks to hit?
Still undecided where to go - maybe I will go to Elliot/Bargara and catch up with a few old mates and then head down to Burrum as well.
Maybe see you there.
Last week Vando hit the only rock in the whole area (Flat Rock). The sun was low and it is hard to see but if you know where it is it is easy to avoid. Between 1st and 2nd red marker going out the channel. Other than that hard rock the only other hard things are the shells on the turtles that pop up occasionally. Let us know on the forum when you are going to Burrum and we can go for a sail. Cheers
Don't be too sad Vando as things generally happen in 3's. I have only broken a boom so far, touch wood!! You probably had all 3 at the same time you lucky boy, so at least you are more in control of your destiny.![]()

I'm out for Aust Day long weekend as I have a yachting regatta to organise and sail in at King Fisher Bay Resort. In future if you want to bring up the family there will always be places to stay. If you wife would prefer Hervey Bay as a base you can stay with us. Cheers
Burrum should be good this coming Sunday Afternoon, low tide and 15-20 knots SE.
Will you be there porkchop?
Forcast is for light winds but if I can sail in company I will probably be there. Call me 0408 192 071. Cheers
Am I just talking to myself!!! Doesn't matter, in my profession I get that a lot. Anyway the tides and wind are looking very good for Wednesday this week. Mid pm lows and 20-30 knots from the south east. Some guys will be there and the more the merrier.![]()

hi porkchop.
i am looking to come up there in march/april.
have you got any advice? i am told there is a fishing comp on around then. do you know when it's on.
cheers
Hey Gestalt
You could tow a big tuna behind you when your sailing.
Let me know if you win the contest![]()
Hi Justin,
The Burrum Heads fishing comp is on every Easter. It is great for the whole family and there is no better place for kids to enjoy.
A couple of years ago I won a tinny, outboard and trailer for my $10 entry fee and did not wet a line as the windsurfing was too good.
You should book now if you intend being there for easter.

hi guys,
cheers for the help
i am organising a windsurf comp at burrum.
so was hoping to avoid the fishing comp.
shhhh, don't tell anyone..... [}:)]
thought i would also ask.
can you guys recommend a venue to have drinks and food at after each day of the event and also any good accomodation.
like Rays back yard....
(caravan parks and motels are also ok. somewhere near the strip though)
cheers again.
Vando has staked a claim on a nice bit of real estate right on the speed strip.
Its called flat rock and you cant miss it as he used his fin as a stake.
Nice bit of real estate Vando but did they tell you it gets a bit wet other than low tide. Probably need a house on stumps about 5 mts high. Nice thought, how good would that be for the spectators at the speed strip. I'm going to Burrum now. Just a thought or 2!!! How would you get the car in your garage, who gets the milk and bread at high tide, is it ok to get power & water (solar & desalination plant) and sewage???? Yeh I'm bored at work.
SSsshhheesh Chorkpop, when out in the sun it might be best if you start using a hat. It may not be too late.
hi again guys, cheers for the help.
hooray the website link you gave was excellent.
i thought i would spill the beans.

Yes I do get bored at work and I always wear a hat in the sun, any other advice for me. Myself, Knot Board and a few other from the bay had a sail at Burrum today. 80 Turbo and 7.0m was the call for the day as the wind was down a little. The runs were great but no need to worry Vando your record still stands. By the way Knot Board I have a few cambers for your sail so see you soon for the off load. Cheers![]()

I have family and work commitments so not me but Knot Board may be interested. Burrum is a bit dirty with debris from the river flush outs after all the rain of late so we have been sailing at the Shark Show in Hervey Bay lately until Burrum cleans up a little. The tide times are perfect but the lows are still a little high at 0.7ish but it will still be flat about 1 hour either side of the low tide. There are some new fast boards/fins/sails up here at the moment (not me though) so look out.![]()

Tomorrow wed. prolly cupple of us will be out after high tide around 9.30ish off
