The mylar trick is neat! Thanks for showing that. Prior to seeing that image, I just saw the bog on the rail and thought: Well, that's a lot of sanding! ![]()
There's still a bit of sanding, it's very hard to keep a very smooth flow and tension.
Any variation leaves slight ripples.
I use the same technique making fins, hold the mylar at the right angle and it can give a very nice foil.
The carbon over the top of the finbox went on today.
Not very complicated, but when Pete posts his pics, you should be able to see the chemi pen lines I used to locate the footstrap screw holes. I've used a pointed screw driver to find the holes, while resin is wet, so they can be drilled out after.
Pete's sent me the pics this time.
Here's the carbon going on
And here's me sticking the pointed screwdriver thingy into the footstrap screw holes.

next job, cut out the fin screw recesses and bog the carbon
Saturday, added some bog.
There was a low spot, so marked it with texta and filled to it.
Sanded to rail.

Well it needed a bit more than this, I used the sanding block first, this is to get rid of the chamfers.
Forward to Monday.
Sanding low spot.
Don't tell Bugs, I used his "foam only" long sander to get the bottom nice and straight.
fin box top coat sanded.

Excess carbon removed and bog sanded back, not sure how Pete's going to handle this. Theres something about filling the wells so all his boards use the same size screws.
I guess we'll see in the future.
So Peter has the board on his car, my work is over.
I'll keep up with the pics as I putty and paint.
As Decrepit said I'll be filling up the wells in the finbox mainly because the front one will interfere with my toes due to the changed footstrap position.
It will make it the same depth as the screws in all my other CA boards.
Great thread Mike and Pete. I'm enjoying the photos and description. Now we just need wind so you can use it in anger!!
Bugger, forgot to weigh it, before and after.
Certainly not supper light.
I've tried to add as little weight as possible.

Some sanding today

Still have a low spot where the second layer of carbon ends

Marked the low spot for more filling.
Weighed the board as best I could and is approx 6.6 kg without straps.
Added some filler to the low spot and started to fill the fin screw wells around some carbon tube

I'll grind the tube down so the screw head is level with the footpad
It's very yellow Pete, is that just the resin colour, or haven't you got much qcell in?
But looking good, will be much kinder to your toes.
We just should have done it before that last layer of carbon.
The previous pics are a yellow spray putty i had left over. Even so the epoxy I have is fairly yellow. I re-did the non skid on Gloria's white CA. She now calls it her yellow board.

Topped up the plugs and while I'm waiting for the last lot of filler on the bottom to harden stuck on the WAVE WANDS decal and re-named the board![]()
once it's sanded spray putty should be all it needs.

In case you were wondering.....
Sanded the filler today and eliminated most of the gappiness that was spoiling my happiness
time for putty and primer.

a little vee at the back straps. Fairly flat forward to front straps

The nice work is yours Mike, I'm just doing the donkey work finishing up. Though I will take credit for my sign writing
Applied the first lot of spray putty. Temp started to get cool quite quickly so gave it some time under a lamp.
It's jammed in the corner of my tiny garage so I can get the car in.

Is it just the photo or is there a lot of tail behind the fin box?
I believe the box was moved forward to accommodate weed fins
The photo does exaggerate it a bit, but yes, it's further forward to get the ,center of lift of the majority of the fins, Pete will be using with it, under his feet. This means the fins don't need to be so far forward in the head, lessening the dreaded weed mustache.

Some more sanding again today.
Theres still a couple of defects to fix on the bottom. After that I'll give it another coat of primer and a wet 600 sand and white paint
The top will be painted white as well except for the decal.
