Just listening to others ideas...........

How about a team comp within what we already do, prize for most km's total by any team in a day, and a prize for highest ave km's in a day by a team (this one frought with probs tho)?

Encourages as many team participants as possible to contribute, the other one of ave while at some levels fairer, too easily exploited with just send out your fittest sailors, so probably not a good one!

And while big teams may be at some advantage, there's nothing perfectly fair about the GTC anyway!! Just an excuse to windsurf more

As one not accustomed to distance sailing I think it sounds a good idea. Even for teams / individuals who do go for distance I don't not think it will be an easy one to do really well at, just because a location gets a day of consistent wind does not mean that many sailosr from a team would be available or willing to put in the hours.
Let's give it a go!

Yes thats the sort of thing I mean and every team has a whole year to find one of those magic days, and as many as possible try to contribute!!!!!!!!

sounds great is there a point system where smaller teams aren't disadvantaged, i can see some of the more serious guys jumping ship and the smaller teams folding

What about the total km's of a session divided by the total number of team members. The bigger the team, the greater the effort in getting everyone to sail that given day.

I wonder if smaller teams could combine with other smaller teams just for the comp? Have to be acreful about complex scoring systems

well talking about a handicap system, this year i'm moving up to legend's 60+ how's that for a handicap
you know its hard enough for us old guys to keep up with you younger guys on a short speed run's let alone let alone sailing 400ks in one session, how about we get a couple of days start, besides it's bed time at 4.00pm

I think this idea makes sense and fits in with the GPSTC ideal of getting us all out on the water and gives the smaller teams a chance

As a not quite yet GPS sailor, but getting closer, I like the idea of distance based comps. Need to see what kind of speed figures I can come up with, but I'm not sure they wil be too impressive, but dsitance is something I could be better at.
Maybe another one would be greatest distance sailed while continuously on the plane ??
Not sure how that would fly, but in my glory days, I could plane for a long time, and I'm sure there are other people who can too. It's a way of assessing gybing as a skill aspect of sailing.

What about the distance comp being the number of sailors in the team who get within 10% of their PB distance on one day.
So in a month you get a point for every team sailor that gets within 10% of his/her PB and standard rules apply you must have at least two on the water and posting to get any points.
This way might be a little fairer and keep the Tasmanians in check.

Min of 10% below current distance PB to count, looks good, but a huge day on the water, and somebody cracks like a 250k PB being a once in a lifetime crack, when normally they score between 50-100, may prove to be detrimental to encouraging any further effort? Is that what you were saying?

Yep the difficult one is the distance specialists and what to do with them, maybe 10% is not enough.

If you have someone who has distance PB's of 200kms, then a 180 is a stretch even 160 at 20% is a lot.
Maybe Nebb's might have an idea as he fits into this category.

Maybe if 2 of your team log greater than each persons 12 month distance average you get a team point might be better.

That would be a good encourager and pretty fair.

Total distance sailed by a team in a day sounds good to me. Any extra fluffing around with percentages would mean it's too hard for a poor little human (like me!) to figure out.

Of course this would mean that larger teams would have an advantage, but it also means that no matter who the sailor is, even if they just sail out, fall off, and sail back, then their score would help the team towards their total.

I like that idea

P.S. If I were to sail 200 k's in a day (a pretty fair sort of effort you'd have to agree) then that's not even within 25% of my PB...

Has to be divided by total number of sailors in the team. That's not too hard. Otherwise big teams have a huge advantage.

Conversely, big teams with a lot of "less active"/social/junior members could be disadvantaged if the kms were divided by the number of sailors in the team....

It would be a good incentive to get those less active members participating.
I'm sure part of the reason members become inactive is that they see their scores don't make any difference anyway.
Some inactive team members still sail, they just don't post their results.
I'm sure if a team captain was to contact inactive members and say "we're going all out to try for this distance challenge tomorrow, can you come and sail - any distance will do - and help us out?" sailors would be encouraged to make the effort, and would probably be pleased to be asked. To feel part of the team.

To get around the problem of sailors who have permanently left the sport or relocated, maybe divide the score by the number of team members who have posted results in the current year?

What would the results look like with the top 4 being included as opposed to the top 2?

That's the best idea so far, but going to be harder for Nebs to work out.

Sounds like a great concept.

My input would be for the person who suggested it to supply the carton of beer for each team member of the winning team for being such a sadistic mongrel

Interesting one Magnus, that could completely change the comp There could almost be 2 annual prizes, one traaditional best 2 per division and another best4. I wonder how that would have worked out in the last 2 or 3 years

So has anyone run this top 4 scenario through the results.
Perhaps we could run it for the "GPSTC Windsurfing Ashes Series" as a trial
(& also to give the Poms a fighting chance)

The carton of beer should be for poor Nebs who has to do all the work when we come up with these ideas.
