Just listening to others ideas...........
How about a team comp within what we already do, prize for most km's total by any team in a day, and a prize for highest ave km's in a day by a team (this one frought with probs tho)?
Encourages as many team participants as possible to contribute, the other one of ave while at some levels fairer, too easily exploited with just send out your fittest sailors, so probably not a good one!
And while big teams may be at some advantage, there's nothing perfectly fair about the GTC anyway!! Just an excuse to windsurf more![]()
As one not accustomed to distance sailing
I think it sounds a good idea. Even for teams / individuals who do go for distance I don't not think it will be an easy one to do really well at, just because a location gets a day of consistent wind does not mean that many sailosr from a team would be available or willing to put in the hours.
Let's give it a go!
i recon this session would be competitive if we can repeate it!![]()

team total for the day a sniff under 1600km's![]()
well talking about a handicap system, this year i'm moving up to legend's 60+ how's that for a handicap
you know its hard enough for us old guys to keep up with you younger guys on a short speed run's let alone let alone sailing 400ks in one session, how about we get a couple of days start, besides it's bed time at 4.00pm![]()
As a not quite yet GPS sailor, but getting closer, I like the idea of distance based comps. Need to see what kind of speed figures I can come up with, but I'm not sure they wil be too impressive, but dsitance is something I could be better at.
Maybe another one would be greatest distance sailed while continuously on the plane ??
Not sure how that would fly, but in my glory days, I could plane for a long time, and I'm sure there are other people who can too. It's a way of assessing gybing as a skill aspect of sailing.
What about the distance comp being the number of sailors in the team who get within 10% of their PB distance on one day.
So in a month you get a point for every team sailor that gets within 10% of his/her PB and standard rules apply you must have at least two on the water and posting to get any points.
This way might be a little fairer and keep the Tasmanians in check.
Total distance sailed by a team in a day sounds good to me. Any extra fluffing around with percentages would mean it's too hard for a poor little human (like me!) to figure out.
Of course this would mean that larger teams would have an advantage, but it also means that no matter who the sailor is, even if they just sail out, fall off, and sail back, then their score would help the team towards their total.
I like that idea ![]()
P.S. If I were to sail 200 k's in a day (a pretty fair sort of effort you'd have to agree) then that's not even within 25% of my PB... ![]()
Has to be divided by total number of sailors in the team. That's not too hard. Otherwise big teams have a huge advantage.
Conversely, big teams with a lot of "less active"/social/junior members could be disadvantaged if the kms were divided by the number of sailors in the team....
Sounds like a great concept.
My input would be for the person who suggested it to supply the carton of beer for each team member of the winning team for being such a sadistic mongrel
