It will be impossible to keep everyone happy on this one.
I think the "Keep It Simple" philosophy needs to win out here. Re GPS Max Display, it is simple, verifiable for every sailor after each run, no need for downloads, and The most respected speed sailor in Aus came up with some technical reasons for it. This is not the World Champoinship of speed, ISSR ratified, it's just for fun and participation.
The GPSSS is for the more serious and technically minded, so no need to duplicate what they are doing, if ya only wanna be deadly serious then stay with the GPSSS.
At this stage there hasn't been a huge amount of interest with only one team from WA and one team from NSW, and one victorian individual. If Sponsors wanna try and push it by advertising it more seriously, and get more interest, then I'll leave that to them.
"why not have a rocket air category. gps devices also measure height..."
Not with any accuracy. Vertical accuracies with consumer gps units of 10-20 meters are not uncommon.
see here for detailed explanation..

Great initiative Hardie
I'll have a team in this dig too - I'll advise my team mates in due course - soon - hopefully
Vando / Kato etc - this is the 2007 GPS Winter Storm "Challenge"
This is not the late spring / summer challenge
Get out the fat rubber guys!
There is method in Hardie's madness [I think]
The more the merrier!
Remember - the reason we wear these things on our arms is that we are inherently competitive people - ever with ourselves
All sounds like fun, I'de be keen if i could jump on a Perth or say Mandarah team. New to Perth and an ex Sandy Point tryhard speedster.
So could get back into my favourite part of winsurfin, crashin 35kn+,
breaking gear. Windsurfing Shops here i come....!![]()
Lenny
Hey while i think of it, what sort of winds do we expect here in the winter, i may may need to update a sail or 2 for local conditions?
Cheers Lenny

For the SP advantage, there are few ways that I can think of that would give us a suitable handicap:
- exclude Shallow Inlet altogether -> there are other spots where would could sail, eg: Inverloch, or out in the SP surf, the Bay in Melbourne.
- making guying part of it (aka alpha racing)
- make distance a factor -> SP is limited in length to about 1km at most and through rough water too.
- Limit us to big'ish sails, say 5.5 or bigger depending on body weight -> this should limit most of the guys speeds to something realistic.
Mathew
PS. Hi Vando, I definitely would be in the SP team and loving it...! Although I do agree that the SP advantage is a little unfair... :-)
Sweet thanks hardie, sounds good can make up the numbers if ones short or whatever, look forward to it. Bring on the Fronts.
The SP advantage???? not realy sure what this is. top speed spot.
Is it the 5kn out going tide when the SWester blowin down the speed course?
Hey Mat your so tinny with the prizes too in the comps......![]()
Any handycap ya wanna give yaselves down at the pit im sure would be welcomed![]()
My current thinking after reviewing all thread feedback, private emails, and personal consultations is as follows:
The challenge gives us an oppurtunity to set up a data base, similar to GPSSS.
We have 4 main team categories:
Either Max GPS or 2 sec GPS max
500m
5 x 10sec
Alpha racing
or 1 hr or Nautical mile, or 6 categories, with different states sponsoring each trophy?
A trophy for each team in the best category of each, no matter where it's set, so if anyone goes to Sandy Point and sets it there it holds.
For individuals, it's personal bragging rights only. That is, scan the data base, see what category you are in and check your performance.
What do you think my fragile little Pets?
Sounds bloody good to me. Best bit is I only have to play, and log and get tips from all the Guru's
. Somebody is doing all the back ground work
You are good at it but
and we all think your a fine upstanding chap![]()
Seriously though, big thanks for your effort here. And its only in its infancy![]()
Will travel to play, so dont hide the good tracks too much![]()

sorry i think I am missing something here, any help in seeing the light would be gladly appreciated

Doesn't the need4speed database on the windwarrior site offer the same thing ?
I thought the point of the need4speed was a free database and 'friendly' comp for those not interested or able to perform at the GPS Speed Sailing level or without the restrictions imposed by GPS SS .
Aussie sailors recording their speeds registered in Australian waters
By the looks there are now categories for each state so if you can't claim the 'overall' bragging rights you still have the chance to claim it for your state ?
I would like the database to include state categories, as well as Age divisions in each state, and then each sub-category of measurement whether it be max gpos, 1 hr, 5 x 10 sec, alpha etc.
Gives more oppurtunities for Australian sailors who sail in Aussie waters to compare apples with bananas, or whatever that medically ill saying is![]()
hi hardie, love your work so far.
all the categories sound brilliant. alpha being my favourite. ![]()
keeping it team based is a must for me. what do we do there. add all the times up and divide by the number of members to get the final figure from each team.
also there is a way of watching all the gps tracks overlayed on the web. for example with the alpha class it would be like a virtual slalom race.
cheers.![]()

thanks. Looks good. Not.
I vote for alpha as well... there are many different competitions where all you've got to do is put up a big expensive sail and then sail broad. Alpha would give the poor guys a bit of a chance ![]()
How do we nominate a team for this GPS Winter Storm Challenge.
I sail in Mackay and have a team of 4 ready to go.
Call us the CQ Ripple Riders

OK we have enough interest "it's on" starts 01/05/07, just finalising rules and data base.
Make sure you nominate/register on nomination thread, and email me your details.
