OK we have enough interest "it's on" starts 01/05/07, just finalising rules and data base.

Make sure you nominate/register on nomination thread, and email me your details.
My ideas are as follows:

Run it from say 1 May till 31 Aug, if popular every year?

Mob vs mob intratstate and statistically averaged out to state vs state.

Make it a teams event, Each mob must have at least 2 team members.

For WA Mobs can be from Mandurah, Safet bay, Bunbury, PeliPoint, Melville, Point Walter, and wherever else?

GPS Display at end of each session, added and divided my no of team members, and session averages are added and divided by number of sessions for the season, dropping 10 lowest averages to encourage sailing in most conditions. Just ideas at this stage someone may come up with better idea. Rules should not be too complicated.

The guys involved in the state vs state 1 hour challenge may have a good system already in place.

Other ideas? we have 18 days to sort it. Maybe a sponsor might want to get on board for each state, or just put up a perpetual trophy? Something so as many as people as possible are involved enjoy, and the sponsors or shops get more exposure for the sport, and hopefully sell more gear??

My current thinking after reviewing all thread feedback, private emails, and personal consultations is as follows:

The challenge gives us an oppurtunity to set up a data base, similar to GPSSS.

We have 4 main team categories:

Either Max GPS or 2 sec GPS max
500m
5 x 10sec
Alpha racing

or 1 hr or Nautical mile, or 6 categories, with different states sponsoring each trophy?

A trophy for each team in the best category of each, no matter where it's set, so if anyone goes to Sandy Point and sets it there it holds.

For individuals, it's personal bragging rights only. That is, scan the data base, see what category you are in and check your performance.

What do you think my little fragile Pets?

I think we need to encourage youngens into speedsailing, what about an individual prize in each state for quickest under 18, and quickest under 13? Sponsors needed?? But getting ahead of myself here, still need people to come up with ideas, and nominate a team.

I nominate the Mandurah Mob: Team Captain Elmo, Hardie, and still recruiting!!

I think times will have to be verified through GPS-Speedsurfing.com

So that the youngens, beginners, and those in less windy places, or not ideal places, get a fair go, maybe we get a baseline of everyone's highest GPS Display by say June 30, and the team with the highest percentage improvement by 31 August wins? Just another idea to make things fair??

Just get any GPS reciever that you can download the data to a PC.
Garmin Foretrex 101 or 201 are suitable but get an Aquapac to put the GPS in. Keeps them totally waterproof and will float if you lose it.

OK.. It's unofficial yet but it looks like we have: 2 Sponsors that are Keen to sponsor this fun event , so the question is "ARE YOU KEEN?"

If so join up, nominate a team and team captain, no fees to join, just fun to participate, and some exposure for those who sponsor the comp.

We need to make it so we don't incur any insurance liabilities etc. or everyone will drop out, so what are the ideas to avoid this?

Do we remove the word "competition".

If you guys from the same state don't know each other, email each other privately, get a name for your team, and the best looking one is captain!!!!! That's why Elmo refused Captaincy of the Mandurah Mob and nominated me, Oh the burden when you are good looking

Thanx for the interest so far!!!!!!!

Nice concept, and probably will work quite fairly if you exclude Sandy Pt from possible venues!

On an average day at Sandy Pt, there are guys going as fast on old wave gear, as the best times recorded anywhere in WA, ever!

That's why I thought one idea might be for everyone has to have a baseline recorded by June 30, then it is the percentage improvement by 31 August? Maybe Improvement over a period of months, is more important than outright speed or there can be joint prizes/trophies.

BTW Trophies for each state are being considered by a Sponsor!!

There's gonna have to be some integrity here, if anyone cheats by holding back before 3o June 07, then really they are cheating themselves, I'm not going to bother trying to control for that.

The KEY here is Fun and Participation!!!!!

Not meant to be tooooooooooo serious!!

Though we welcome and encourage the extremely serious also!!

awesome work Hardie. I've emailed ka and katapult to work out some details. I'm away for 4 weeks so I nominate ka for el capitain. We'll work on a name and get back to you. How about instead of competition it's just called a challenge as per Elmos suggestion? *throws down an imaginary gauntlet*
That might get around any insurance issues or whatever else.
How are we going to send the data and to where? Will it be actual logged runs or done on a trust basis and just submit top speeds, a la windwarrior? Will it be 2 sec average or 10 second? I'm not sure our speed run has 10 seconds worth of run in it
I'm Big Kev excited bout this!

Not sure yet, maybe this site should do things by Max GPS Display, and leave other sites to do their thing. And preferably, or on request things need to be posted on GPS-SS, and data logs supplied if required.

Looks like i could be on my pat malone for a Bunno Team. I have not seen anyone else at my local that sail with a GPS. I think they all think i am a bit nuts as i am always stopping to check my read outs and i always use bigger sails in an attempt to go faster which results in some spectacular ELMO'S.

Is anyone in Bunno keen?

Cheers bender

Great idea Hardie, but I,m not sure about taking out Sandy point ,I need that unfair advantage. Had a couple of ideas to even it out.

Fastest ave at a speed strip (this could include S/P Vic ,Woodsmans Pt WA etc

Fastest speed at a new location ( Somewhere that hasn,t been GPS sailed before by the sailer)

Fastest ave at a non speed strip ( open water/bay)

Longest distance sailed in a day by one person( or longest sailed on coldest day)

Fastest speed by youngest person

Fastest speed by oldest person

or have a look at Mals idea about Alpha racing ( fastest speed with a jybe in the middle)

All sound like good ideas to me. What do others think???

No I don't want SP taken out either, but if we did it on pure speed SP sailors would win evrything. So we need to give everyone a chance to achieve something, not exactly sure how, but mutliple categories as you suggest sounds great!!!

If I'm hearing people correctly we need to make this as inclusive as possible....... Not sure exactly how at this stage....... I think at some level people need to just enter and use it as a process to improve their own speeds and technique and look at their own PB's as the bench mark..... The challenge is to create some hype and get people involved, create relationships among windsurfers both intrastate and interstate.... and we all learn more, sail more, get more fit and hopefully have fun...... I'm certainly not going to take it to seriously and am not interested in going faster than anyone else (except Elmo), it's all about self-improvement for me!! there should be some fun and cudos in being the slowest in each category!!!!!!!

Hey, Hardy, isn't there some way we can include our favourite kiter????
I'm sure he won't put his strings in our face.
So we're on different equipment, but that could make it more interesting.

I do like the Alpha Racing idea, test both speed and gybing.
I agree exclude Sandy Point, sorry Mat.
I Like the State verses state thing too but I suggest min 5 sailers from each state. Troppo might have to come and visit up there mate if im going to get any wind through winter.
