What is interesting, is Andy Brandt told me my forearm was getting sore because I was using my front am too much to hold boom when foiling. He wanted me to move harness lines forward to increase upwind angle and so they effectively became my front arm support-wise, takes some getting used to. Had a good session yesterday with the lines forward, but forearm was sore going into session so took some ibuprofen, afterwards felt just a little soreness in right forearm/elbow so iced it for 20 min. and then felt fine, and today my forearm/elbow is not sore at all even after using a screwdriver! Normally a screwdriver will set it off.
Can you shlogg hands-off the sail and in harness? I've been able to get my lines more balanced recently. Also, been able to commit more into the harness on the fin or foil. I used to cramp up my forearms all the time after a session, and I think it was because they were unbalanced and I wasn't fully weighting the harness.
Now it's mostly soreness if I have a very pump heavy session.
With the short forward lines I now unhook before coming down, and shlogg unhooked. Andy also got me using smaller sails, so was on a 5.8 yesterday in 8-11 with 10-11 knot gusts, normally would of been on 8.0 or 7.2. So shlogging with 5.8 takes less effort than 8.0, but need couple of pumps of 5.8 sail to get up every time, though that did not make my left arm sore, or make my right arm more sore than it was going into session.
With the 8.0 or 7.2 I would pump the foil, not the sail, to get up and thought that was good because my arm was already sore, and thought pumping sail would make it more sore, but as noted above holding boom with front arm was what was making arm sore.
Once up, hooked in and leaned out, using rear hand to sheet in as needed to maintain upwind angle and speed.
I mean are the harness lines balanced? I have been getting mine so that I can just hook in and sail a bit hands-off.
If I don't do that it makes sailing and foiling much much more strenuous.
No, lines are not balanced, they are forward so take the place of front arm, and then I do have to use rear arm to sheet in to adjust speed. When I had them balanced, I got a sore arm, from using front arm too much to adjust sail. Feels very different with lines forward.
Every time I've had mine unbalanced it was Not Fun. I haven't had a problem going upwind with them balanced, or downwind for that matter. Something doesn't seem right here.
But going upwind with them balanced requires front arm pulling on boom, in my experience. But with them forward it is like front arm is constantly pulling on boom, and that allows for very high upwind angles, when combined with the rear arm sheeting in. And since I am working on my foiling gybe, need to get upwind every run. And the effort required by rear arm with lines forward, is less than effort required by front arm when lines are balanced, when heading upwind.
Using rear arm to sheet in, you are grabbing boom far away from center of sail pressure, but using front arm to grab boom you are closer to center of sail pressure so takes more effort to do less.
Remember Andy's Sail Chi lecture?
Forgot about Arnica montana as a pain reliever, giving it a try for my forearm, will apply before the session and maybe afterwards too. No dangerous side effects like NSAIDs.
I used to have all sorts of pain after windsurfing but i found this guy and he fixed everything, a magician ![]()

that could be fun ,if your holding the hammer ![]()

Isn't that how he cures cancer? ... just need to throw blessed-water over your right shoulder too.

Oh yeah, my guy uses nails, they really get deep!
But seriously, the 7% Arnica gel got from Walgreens really works!, just have to rub in until there is nothing left on the skin, can use for forearm and the elbow joint, just treat the whole circumference of the joint, takes 30-60 min. to work. Between that and following AndyBrandt's advice on posture and harness-line position and I did not need any pain killers after two days in a row of great wind!, and I went into those days with a sore elbow.
And the most effective treatment to heal my sore forearm and elbow was REST from windfoiling!, 12 days off due to painting and top coating my board, lifted weights (normal weights) and swam (regular workout) during that time, after first session back out arm was pain free. Sometimes you gotta just give things a break from what made them hurt in the first place.

Are you sure it's windsurfing causing your forearm pain ?
So the problem with my forearm and elbow was due to the constant pulling on the front of the boom with a bent elbow when foiling upwind, Andy Brandt told me that as soon as I mentioned my sore elbow and forearm. He taught me to use the harness line as my front arm, and then front arm can relax during upwind runs, while rear arm is sheeting in and out as needed but not locked in one position like front arm was.
But here is what I noticed when trying to let elbow heal, when I would brush my teeth, or floss, my elbow was also bent and I started to notice that I was really tensing up the elbow even though I did not need to. It was like muscle memory kicking in, and when I extended my elbow afterwards it would feel strained and hurt as I straighten it out. So focused on relaxing elbow and along with rest from foiling my elbow is now good, but I still find I will over tense it when brushing and flossing teeth, does not hurt afterwards when I straighten it out, but being more aware and relaxing elbow all the same when brushing and flossing. Really just a bad habit now.
Three days/sessions in a row and feel good morning after, no soreness! Elbow and forearm finally healed. Andy Brandt's technique of using harness line to replace front arm on boom helped a lot, but need to be powered up for that stance (leaning out and forward heading upwind), if gust drops have to move to a more upright stance over the board since sail can not support me leaning out, but then holding boom with arms and harness line is easy.
And did use 5 gr creatine monohydrate before and after sessions, really helps for endurance and recovery without pain. Problem is the price for creatine has almost tripled from $11/lb for SixStar brand to $28/lb for another brand at Walmart!, something sounds wrong with that. Still have plenty left, will try to wait it out. That is how I deal with products that have suddenly jumped 50% or more in price, I stop buying them!
The SixStar creatine monohydrate I used to get from Walmart, is now selling for $77/lb online!, that is just crazy inflation.
