How will they hold up on the Aussie summer sun when you come in for a break ?
Will your 5.7 become a 3.7 when you go to go back out ?

Ha! imagine that..
Given the fact the sails are a composite of Dyneema and Aramid, will probably withstand UV and the rough Aus weather way better than a standard mylar sail.
All the info are on the site.

In the stockists, I gather you mean Windsurfing Perth? ![]()
I'd be keen to see more tech / stats videos as the higher and faster claim is of course rather common. Did look good when I saw one, nice and light etc, $1500 is not tooooooo bad if its exceptionally different.
What bend curve might tempt a few people too.....
Dynema is aramid and aramids aren't UV resistant. They have to be used with UV resistant films.
I'll take their claims of superior durability with a grain of salt until it's been demonstrated.
Incidentally how do Severne's "membrane" sails do in that regard? Do they have a decent life?
Gaz you're half right. Aramid (Kevlar etc) is about the least UV resistant thing I can think of. I'd suggest that's why its black.
Dyneema is not aramid - it is polythylene (UHMWPE)
Both have the best tensile strength going, dyneema is just lighter.
We saw aramid fibre in sails 15yrs ago. AFAIK the only new thing here is the 3D printed (simplified, I know) method of manufacture.
JFC, what a load of hype.

We have the Wave!
northwindsurfing.com/products/north-wave
3.3m GBP 819 to 5.8m GBP 1049. None in stock. Actually, nothing at all in stock.
Guess we will have to keep waiting to see what they are actually like and get some real world feedback from normal sailors.
Not a lot of actual info on that video.
Not much more on the website either!
A question for those who have seen this technology on yachts etc
Will it roll into a bag ok?
will it be susceptible to damage more than a normal sail if something is put on top of the rolled sail?
or is it better than a Mylar and batten sail in that regard?

They aren't very colourful.

Wow so much negativity towards a reborn brand

Mark, some good knowledge in your words mate!
Dynema/Ultra PE (aka UHMWPE) has indeed a very good UV resistance, not so much does Aramid, my bad on that.
Yes the Stockist in Perth is indeed Windsurfing Perth - Kiteaddiction.
I guess you saw a 4.2 in Margaret River with Federico? Please ask him to demo it next time that sails is there for this exact purpose.
Also this page shows some good data on different materials which is bang-on what you said.
www.northsails.com/sailing/en/2019/12/fibers-fabrics-a-sailors-guide-to-finding-the-right-materials
No, I saw one elsewhere but I might be outside the target demographic by about 20kg hahahaha....... 4.2 is my once or twice a year sail.
More than happy to accept 5.0, 5.3 and 5.8 here in Gero, and I'll be sure to pass them around.

Pretty sure I have seen a prototype sail from a different brand made out of the exact same material in the this exact colour. Makes me wonder if the colour is not by choice but that's just what the manufacturer of the cloth sells. Does anyone know if this cloth was developed by North or a third party supplier.

It's not really a cloth as such, you don't buy it on a roll like conventional cloth, its threads that are laid directly onto the mould with a strand laying head and wetted out threads, this is then sealed once all the fibres are laid and baked to set the resins.
It's then peeled off the mould and finished with sewing machines etc.
It has the same batten ends as Pryde. I'm a little sceptical about their durability.
I'm curious to see the whole range. I heard they are going to do a power wave sail too, and a race sail.

Yes, for a hyped launch I was also expecting a bit more than details about waves sails that you cannot order. Current supply problems make it not the best times to launch new products so it might explain it.
Pieter Bijl makes very innovative products (www.proboom-windsurfing.com/) so let's see how the sails perform. If he can pull off a 8.0 & 9.0 foil racing sail with air cams that is light, durable and no big mast sleeve to fill up with water (filled up with air) I might consider them.
They aren't very colourful.

+1. It seems like the severne loyal oz crew consider this 3di launch as a big threat![]()
Remember the positive hype around the launch of the too thin and brittle Chinese built membrane sails 2015/2016.
Most likely, Norths new tech will be standard in 5 years, my guess

Exactly, hence the sarcastic/stereotypical comment... I have nothing against the new brand, it's good to see.

Yes, I owned one of them, and it didn't last long. It was fun while it lasted ![]()
At least the got the colour right ![]()
If the sails are anywhere near as good as that video I would be tempted.
What bend curve might tempt a few people too.....
that is the key question!
based on pictures posted in another thread, i can just about bet it's *not* anything that tends to flex top.

i call them "the *other* black sails"
If they are anything like North's 3DL yacht sails then they will be pretty special.
I'll say it again.
