so... live in an inland area with generally light winds. Most of the new foilers (without prior windsurfing experience) have gone wing. Can't fault them for that. Most of the existing windsurfers have gone windfoil with just a few "defections"
.
One of the beginning windfoilers who has been dabbling in winging just went deep into a high performance kit (see other thread about availability of gear in the US). It has had me thinking. I don't have a big enough sample size but it seems that whether a windsurfer goes wing is influenced by the type and style of windfoil gear they rode. There are exceptions which I'll get to in a moment. Generally, I've seen that windfoilers on higher performance gear (higher aspect and smaller wings, higher overall speeds) tend to stick with windfoiling while those who had slower, draggier gear (e.g. the Infinity 99 crowd who stayed on big foils) found it easier to switch.
The exceptions (I know of a couple) are ones who regularly sail through beach break and had their windfoil gear trashed. Kind of a one and done and I can understand that. I'm literally not tall enough to even get my windfoil gear through a small break and if I lived at the beach, I'd be spending all my time in the wing forum debating the newest parawing with the rest of them.
I don't know if this is just a local illusion based on my projection (I keep trying winging but the urge to rip a high speed jibe keeps me on a windfoil) or something others might have seen.
