Apparently it weighs 250g right on the tail block, not sure how much this would affect performance but it does seem excessive.

Just go for a dump before your surf

Small performance issue for increased life expectancy seems like a pretty fair trade to me. Unless you are a top level / semi pro I doubt you would notice it. I ride a variety of boards with diff weights - I like a bit more weight when its windy, big or messy.

I think Dave's interchangeable device is a great concept. Love the effort he has put on this. Keep up the good work Dave.

I Agree word for.word Ted.

I was referring to the bulky tail pad on the Shark shield and not the surfsafe / rpella device which is mounted under the board between the fins. For what it's worth I've been using Surfsafe's in a couple of boards for a few years and haven't noticed any difference and I've just had the rpella units fitted in two boards and they look the goods.

70-80kg (ok, 120kg for some seabreezers) with at least half on the back foot and you reckon 250g will be noticeable? Maybe if it were stuck right at the nose you'd notice a swing weight effect but not right at the pivot point. Unless you're always blowing tail Clay-style and even then it'll be negligible.

Big bonus on the sticker I reckon. Dave's routing method doesn't lend itself well to post-install on compsands (correct me if I'm wrong). The sticker thing is a great idea. I'd be pretty happy with a single route for Dave's brains + SS's sticker. A hybrid solution.

Also, I'm getting more convinced now that the brains are swappable. A device per board was an expensive proposition but sharing brains between a quiver is much more palatable.

But given how convinced a lot of seabreeze morons were with the effectiveness of the power band, I'm holding out for a frequency-embedded hologram solution. I mean, magnetic leggies are great and all but how good's a hologram?!

With shark shield the mass is not the issue its the size. Almost looks like a trip hazard.

With the Rpela system what do you do when you sell a board? Is there a blank insert available. My problem being an average surfer, but fanatical board collector/seller I only keep boards for approx 3 months. It's too big an outlay for me with 8 boards that rotate regularly...

the Rpela System comes with a sub or blank
most board makers will charge around $100 extra for the non active system installed
them you only need 1 rpela device for your Quiver
we looked at stickers long ago and decided to make a more robust system .

I get the concept of using a sticker, but if i get Tail Pads peeling after a few weeks use, despite all the proper prep and application, what chance has a flimsy sticker got?

This is an area I'm not very familiar with ,but does the Brainstrust here have any info on SharkBanz..

The Video they put out gives the impression that it really does work, and no need to have each board fitted with a device..

Quick question dave or anyone else who would like to answer.

Is it possible to re-fill the hole made from installing the housing if we wanted to sell our board on but keep our RPELA? I dont know about any of you guys but I dont think anyone would be interested in my board if there was a big rectangular hole in it

Cheers

i went in to katana sometime last year and the guy showed me the system, theres a little replaceable block that fills the hole, sort of like how you can get them for fin boxes, if im painting the picture correctly here.

the system katanas offering seems to be the best option, i've been meaning to get one installed in my board

Shame my eight board quiver doesn't let them transfer between boards hey?

Good thing the risk is minute.

The idea is you can install the system in each board, and then transfer the power unit to which ever board your using.

But in reality you could also just have one or maybe two boards with it installed, and during those days when its a bit sketchy, or during whaling shark season, surf those ones..

Yeah I have.

I just understand what I read and don't let social media generated mass hysteria overwhelm my logical faculties.

The risk is minute and the best shark shield things sort of work, a bit, on occassion, in tests that are hardly rigourous or capable of reproducing real life scenarios - partly because of funding, partly because no one in their right mind is going to put themselves in the situation to find out if they work or not, and then do it 1000 times to get statistically meaningful sample sizes. Oh wait a minute lots and lots of people do surf every weekend all over WA. No. I was right the first time - the risk is minute.

And none of that is meant to diminish understandable nerves. If it makes you feel better, go get one. I wear a Gath in sizeable or crowded surf for similar reasons. Then again, I have also had multiple head injuries.

I called Ken Crew Uncle Ken. Since his death I have never really liked surfing alone, so I do get the emotional side of it all, but the risks really are very small.

I was referring to the fact that both options Rpella and shark shield surf are transferable from board to board. That's what this whole thread is about. You didn't seem to realise that. For what it's worth I can say the new Rpella is the goods and makes me feel better even if the risk is minute.
Anyway hope your scoring good waves mate - looking good later in the week

Aah. Lol. Nah I don't know. Shark shield, surf safe, magnet thing, rpella...it's all too much for me.

So...ummm....yeah your first comment was on the money.

Oh yeah. Now I remember. I went back to page one and saw the thumb for the vid. I remember the tail pad was stupidly thick, the sticker looked suspect, and the fitting looked annoying.

Next option...

Being in WA you're in the unique position to be able to talk in person with the brains behind both major electronic devices. E.g. I talked to one last week, just chatting as you do, and damn, he's done some inadvertent testing in situations I wouldn't put myself in. Neither would a hell of a lot of other people if the grapevine is correct. So yeah, whether the device works or not, at least he's got the massive balls to put his life on the line. Not to mention his awesome looking new board construction tech.

To answer this question, a Repela box can be fitted and comes with a cover for the box. If you want the device you buy it separately, remove the cover and clip into the box.

I actually think for resale the box installed is a good thing. It means the second-hand buyer has the option to input the device, or use with the cover on instead. A bit like having 5 fin boxes - you have the option to use the boxes or not.

It was a shame they didn't obey the rules and stay out of the water. You would suggest the chance is that the shark was in the water with them, on the beach side of the net the entire time.. People need to take some responsibility for their own actions, its just a shame that he and the others didn't take the warnings more seriously ..

From the story:
At the time of the attack the red flag that prohibits any entry into the water was raised due to concerns about a hole discovered in the nets. “That same morning the nets were inspected and a two metre hole was found so they closed the beach,”

Hope he pulls through..

I find the situation in reunion bizarre. From what I understand it's mainly tigers that are the culprits? Can't understand why they are attaching so much more since 2011 it's almost like someone's flicked a switch. There's heaps of tigers in NW oz so why hardly any attacks there?

I think you'll actually find the problem is mostly Bull Sharks. Tigers seem to be all that gets caught in their drum lines though..
Bull sharks will attack out of aggression alone. Bull sharks also breed and grow quickly and are known to be very territorial.

Dave could clarify better.

As for Tigers attacking the only real area to be frequent is the Hawaii.

thats right Jb there mostly bull sharks attacking super fast and cunning even when the researchers were studying them they found them almost impossible to find or catch .
im not sure where this spot was but there is heaps of rivers and lagoon flowing into these breaks .
would be keen to get back for trials with what we have learnt about attracting sharks .
btw we are also starting trials with tigers in Hawaii

Is that just a paint job on the deck or is there another layer of something?

No Rpela box?
