Pffft no reason you can't do both if you stay fit n flexible, theres a bloke at my local in his late 70s and still on a 6'8 shortboard, ride mals when its too small for a shortie,so many options for boards these days.Love riding a mal on softer point waves like arra/cresc.Id only ride a mal full-time if my kook to good surf ratio reaches a certain point,of course i move it now and then

for me it hard to go back to a shortie from a mal and when it is a shortie wave the crowds are all over it so little chance to ease into.

however I did 8 days in a row shortboard as well as working on the tools and paddle training - I'm stuffed. so guess a few long board sessions would break up the hi energy wear out factor.

I

Personally I think you take surfing way too seriously you allow it to control your mind/mind set, take up a non water hobby it will balance your head space. I get all depressed when you tell me about how hard it is going from long to shortboards, gets me thinking is it that important to whinge on a perfect summers weekend.

look mac, I answered this and then deleted it. I think this kind of stuff is best left over a coffee. after tux said two old ladies last Monday I have refused to get into a tit for tat. you may have noticed I just said keep surfing.

how about it, you know, we just go for the cheap laughs and leave the heavy hitting stuff out.

cheers

Shame you deleted your post while I was off line and Tux is entitled to his opinion just like you,you asked a question so I answered it to the best of my knowledge and if thats too much for some well they need to HTFU.

ok, if that's how it is .

all good.

see yous in the real greenroom

keep surfing

Lacey trust me, when you get married you pack on weight save hard sell any toy you may own to fund houses kids school fees and to put food on the table, well that's what happened to me,until my wife asked if I still had a surfboard, I didn't so purchased one but it was 8 foot and not the 5'11 I once surfed. I've lost count now haha,If I was your frame I probably would still ride one but I'm not, so keep going but your right there comes a time when an old man looks all wrong on a shortboard and your time is fast approaching

Well said Mac

still have a couple of mates that throw a short board around
But sadly most are kidding themselves.
one mate skinny as ,yep smoker, who just got a 5'10" and his wave count was five waves for a
hour& half sesh. One wave was epic over the falls late takeoff.pissed myself.
but will not get a bigger board, just sits there calling all 666 craft goat boats & see's
walking boards dropknees nose riding long boarding as a joke and
only done by old men, funny coming from a wrinkled up 55y old.

I "gave in" when I did my back in and when I got back to surfing just didn't click with short boarding.

Took a punt and bought a 9'6 Fireball thinking I will just cruise small waves - well bugger me I surfed that 9'6 up and down the coast for the best part of 3 years!

Def. some places and conditions that didn't suit but it was all part of the fun, I only had one board as well!

"Big Red" has since been passed onto a mate who was duly converted!

Serious permanent ankle injury in 2011 shifted me to a 7' single fin as I couldn't crank forehand bottom turns on a shorty anymore without eventually doing one that had me literally screaming in pain. On small days I could surf them as I there wasn't as much power and it's more a whippy turn than the driving turn when it's four foot plus.

In a trip over east in 2014 I bought a 6'10" Fountain of Youth because none of my four boards worked properly in the 1-2foot snot over east. The board surprised me with how much fun it was and I didn't surf anything else the whole way down and all the way back West. In Ulladulla I saw guys on mals doing turns in pretty much the same sections I was, getting way more waves and I thought "Why not?"

I got my first longboard - a single fin - and loved the glide and learning a whole new skill set. Then I realised how easily I was getting into waves and started surfing it in really inappropriate conditions. I was pretty much stunned to realise some pretty solid surf was still available to me if I could get in early. Getting hung in the lip had put me off anything much bigger than 6' for ten years.

i had also met a guy in Ulladulla who had a one board 8' quiver for knee high to 8' so I ordered an 8' 2+1. That has been my all rounder for the last two years. I then got my first 9'6" gun when the 8' was making some take offs scarier than I wanted. I'm now surfing the biggest waves I have paddled for the last 12-13 years. I'm fussy though and go to places with big channels. These beasts are a bitch to try and punch through anything. One if my first attempted surfs on the 9'6" at a Bombie I had my biggest waves on back in the day had me denied four times and on the fifth I got washed into the rocks and got out bleeding. Mission over.

These days I still whip out a 7' fish thing occasionally if it's small or uncrowded. Its best on my backhand when I don't have to compress my ankle. 6 weeks ago I took it out in 4-6' surf with a bloke I had met since the injury. He was amazed at how vertical I was surfing and said he hadn't ever seen me surf like that. I explained (again) about the ankle and subsequent boards and he commented that it must be frustrating to be able to surf like that, but not to be able to surf like that.

To be honest, not really. I live the challenge of learning how to ride these longer boards well. I am a long way from the sense of mastery that I had with shorties. Plus I just have more fun as I rarely miss waves anymore. Coincidentally it has also coincided with a drop in fitness from age, family and work commitments, so now I sit out the back and get the biggest and best, whereas previously I was the buff dude on the inside racking up wave after wave and happily duck diving the sets because I could.

Unfirtunately, long boarding has sparked a whole new investigation of designs. I am currently resisting the urge to get a HP long board and a 12 foot semi-gun glider thing (think Parmenter Makaha Machine style boards) for tiny waves and for whatever I want at the local - huge or mid-size and crowded.

46 and 94kgs with my "good" ankle presently in a brace. Lol. Bloody chicken legs.

Lacey, Mac suggested you look for another interest on land don't forget the bowls club around the corner but in reality i ride a longboard primarily to go surfing as i have enjoyed this sport as a grom, and now much older and heavier i want to still be able to enjoy surfing,so the longboard fits my bill.

Lacey, Mac suggested you grow a dirty hipster beard & drift to Byron with the other sternum polishers but in reality I eat plenty pies , still pull plenty chickbabes , smash the rumbos , still buy my new boardporn each month or so , and I rule the Kirra Point with my sublime dropknee turn yehaaa ..... i ride a longboard primarily to go surfing hard as i have enjoyed this sport as a farkin frothin' grom, and now much older and heavy as 2 44 gallon drums full of good beer i want to still be able to enjoy surfing,so the longboard fits my bill.

The trick LL is to take off the sb leash put on a 10 ft leash ..wax the front half of the long board and attempt to walk cross step style towards the front end .. unless you do this then you are doomed and will never discover the lb stoke
