Shaped by Matt Wilkerson who's from Hawaii but moved to Australia. Believe he was shaping for Bennetts while in Sydney and has now moved to the Sunshine coast and shaping at Beachbeat. Used to shape Larry Bertleman twin fins and fyi has done a run of wicked Bertleman twinnies for Beachbeat. He's also shaped bonzers for the Campbell bros (Duncan is in Hawaii).
The customer didn't like the colour on his new custom so I couldn't resist as I don't particularly give a rats arse about the colour. Though I do like this.
Only had a larger set of the bonzer side runners, a pair of knubsters and no "bonzer" centre fin so the Alkali 7.25" was closest but what the hell I'll ride it like this and see how it goes. The bonzer concaves aren't showing up in the pics but they are there.

yeah I want one

So far so good. Took it out for an early at my local point which was doing its best to be especially burgery.
Then took it for a run later on mid tide which had more oomph.
Buttery smooth in a relaxed way. Very impressed with its section making capability. Turned easily and had a good turn of speed. Had one with a long tapering wall that stood up on the inside and the board really picked up speed. Started dragging my hand in the wall to slow down a little and thought of stepping right back on the tail to slow it down but figured what the hey and just let it have its head.
Scored a Deus exmachina bonzer 7" fin from a mate and put that in so look forward to feeling the difference underfoot.
Now all I need are the proper front bonzer runners.

Nice report Cuttlefish. And a great looking board.

I love my 8' Carver so much I bought a 7' version (x 21 x 2 3/4) when it popped up on Gumtree. Yet to surf it due to other commitments but looking forward to it...

The carvers have a lot of fans. Is that one with a more rounded nose than usual?
I had gifted (or sold for not much $s) my bonzer fronts to the owner of Beachbeat and he'd cut the tabs off and glassed them onto one of his personal boards.
His wife also has/had a set in her favourite egg.
At first he'd forgotten he'd glassed them onto the board and was searching for them so I could borrow them.
Then when we were talking about how he couldn't find them he looked outside and laughed because the fins were in his board which was in the used rack out the front of the shop.
And there was no way his wife was lending me her siderunners out of her favourite board.
Got a text this afternoon. She snapped her board this morning and I could borrow the fins for a while.
He was in the shaping bay doing a single fin egg for her.

There's a local bloke who loves his Carver. The pintail is probably more applicable over here, but I reckon their rocker looks wicked fun.

I love the flavours of boards you get Cuttlefish. Like many people, I'd love to try a bonzer one day. I don't know anyone over here who shapes them.

I have just ordered two Claws though. That should possibly read Da Claws.

Good question. I was going to say it was the angle of the pic, but now I think maybe yeah, perhaps that's the effect of pulling the longer outline into the shorter shape without going super narrow. (I dunno, I bought it cos it was green )

And yes, The Drip, love the rocker. Here's the 7fter and then the 8fter.

Back to the bonzer though...
I was thinking "well, how much could a set of bonzer fins cost?" I just googled it: www.surffcs.com.au/shop/surf-specialty
Jeepers.

Edit ^^^ I see the bonzer fins are expensive AND out of stock. Seems strange to me how often some fins are "out of stock" even on the manufacturer/suppliers own website.
What about the True Ames ones, CF? www.trueames.com/collections/bonzer-fins/products/bonzer-runners-hexcore-fcs-compatible

And the true Ames ones are designed with the Campbell bros.

Cf does it have the bonzer concave?

It does but its nowhere near as deep as the the concaves on the Campbell bros mini light vehicle (5'10") I owned briefly...though it has its own special bottom with some longer finger concaves running along inside the rail on that model too.
I don't mind its not as extreme as the concaves like you see on the Bing synchroniser for example...just cuts down on the versatility of the board, conditions wise, imo.
I read an article on bonzers years ago in which Malcolm said if you put a set of bonzer fins in any board it will feel better...or words to that effect. So I got a set of the side runners and put the large ones into a Michael Cundith 7T which was a 70's single fin templated board with modern rails and a single to double concave bottom. Board felt really good with them in there.
When I went into the factory to pick up the siderunners yesterday there was another two bonzers waiting to be sanded so words out on them around here.

Can buy a set of the fcs from Surfstitch. Then there's a US seller on Ebay and also True ames.
I was chasing a front set to put in the board asap rather than buy an entire set since I already had the rear runners.
Got that sorted now.

50 second mark - good to see it happens to the worlds best, taking off late & doing the old bellyboard. Not always in such great waves though unfortunately

This is one of those Shane Herring boards Slater had made. He surfed one against that Stu guy at Snapper. The banana (Herrings) & the board Stu rode are now selling under Slaters name under the firewire banner. Also one other called the Omni that I am interested in...vid below with Tomo (the shaper) riding.

Guys!

I'm looking at adding something a little shorter to the quiver. I've come across a lovely little Grant Miller board. It's dimensions are 7'2" x 21 1/2" x 2 1/4"..

As a 90ish kg, somewhat beginner, is this thing going to comfortably float me?

Mate you could put on another 10 or 20 KG & that board would still float you

I've got a 6'11" x 20 (20 something) x 2&7/8" Miller v-skate at Beachbeat, Alex Hdld which is a bargain.
Depends upon the planshape of that Miller because 2&1/4" is very thin for your weight.
I'd say Grant may have shaped that board for a light weight female at that thickness.
You can see what dimensions his customers are riding in the testomonials on his website in the different models pages.
Snapping the board would also be a future issue.

I agree with CF that board is way to thin for you at your level. Try and find something similar but a bit thicker - like 2 7/8.

Agree with Tux...disagree with Ted & CF except on the Lib Techs

Question was about float & that board has it in not only volume, but more importantly surface area to get up & planing. Going almost 3 inches on a board with those dims...well good luck with learning to duck dive Just needless excess & learners shouldn't be out in board breaking conditions imo board breaking is the least of their worries.

I will side with Bert Berger anyday...

Hey Mr K, Definitely too thin. Somewhat beginners (and most others) are far better off being a bit over-volumed than being a bit under. I've learned that over time. Every few years I forget and I learn it again. Cheers

He can simply call Grant and ask his opinion. He loves a chat.
Then he'd be able to describe the board model to Grant and Grant will guide him.
Not knowing the planshape (and rocker for wetted planing area) its just a shot in the dark in regard to what the actual surface area is in those dimensions.
One other thing is the rails are likely to be pretty low on a 2&1/4" board so it could be fairly unforgiving.
diversesurf.com.au/volume-shape-technology/
There's a trade off inbetween being able to catch lots of waves and duckdiving. Catching waves kinds wins in most peoples minds I reckon.
I was talking about in the future in regard to board snapping...he's going to progress in what he takes on.
Its all just banter as we haven't seen the pic of the board...could have a hideous hibiscus print on it or something LOL.

Being a heavier fella myself who snapped two long boards in the past 6 months, a 90 kg beginner on a 7 foot board of that thickness...the chances of a snap or crease are pretty high methinks. (Particularly if he's 90 "internet" kilo's...add another 10% ha ha no offence knownothing)

Though hell it could have been the best board ever...very hard to tell over the interweb.
