shark repelling chum

Chop a piece off the block, stick it in your leg rope key holder and your good for a session.
And before anyone points out the obvious yes you will end up smelling like a dead fish, shark to be exact.
Not a lot different to a days fishing I guess?
Cheers. Be interested to read the research, last report I saw on the shark shields kinda said that it was a myth.
It's only a myth and there is no research. A shark will detect your heartbeat a long time before and electrical current omitted, be it DC or AC.
Sharks are repealed with an electrical current that sharks detect only from a meter or two away, hence why it's so effective.
Its kinda like having research that proves you can't see for 100 kms away with the naked eye.
Yeah read the same about heart beat.
Also read that I need to stop pissing in my wetsuit ![]()

Hence why I asked JB,
HM said his marine biologist friend said it would attract them so I asked if he could post a link. I thought it had been previously disproved as per my first post. So if it changed I was asking if he could post it.
But Luckily we have our own Seabreeze expert that has read everything ever written about sharks.
Maybe you should get a job lecturing HMs marine biologist friends about sharks. ![]()

Actually schools out on the effect of electrical fields attracting sharks.
According to the marine biologist It has neither been proven or disproven.
Most evidence of it attracting seems anecdotal based on subjective observations and encounters that likely could have happened without a shield being in operation. Also seems that it is very difficult to measure any real potential cause and effect due to incidental use.
But what is measurable according to choice mag review of all deterrents and scientific research is that electric fields can reduce and do stop the potential of attack. Reducing it in an enticed environment (chum and offal) from 90% down to 40%, not bad for an environment where the beasties have been artificially enticed and excited. So by that reasoning it is then presumed that the potential during a change encounter will be significantly less than an enticed encounter.
Greater minds than ours gentlemen have sorted through the snake oil and the truth.
Personally I was liking the idea of the Rpela, even though it was going to butcher up my board. That is until I read the choice article on it's non effectiveness vs. the shield. If anyone knows of any other evidence to refute this then please bring it.
As for magnets? Yes seems that they can help with specific species but doubtful that they could stop a charging white.
Anti shark chum? Again works with specific species but test conducted in South Africa to repel whites failed, it had absolutely no affect on them.
Camo? Seems to depend on the type? Active warning camo has little to no concrete evidence to support it's claims across a broad spectrum of shark types. And as pointed out in comments tigers have been found with sea snakes in their bellies. Passive or camo that seeks to hid you and make you stealth? I would suspect that if a shark on relied on it's vision then you would have a better chance, but the also pick up vibrations, heart beats, smell, and electrical impulse. And having seen tiger sharks hunting sting rays that are relying of stealth and burying themselves in sand to be nearly invisible only to have a tiger swim a couple of laps over them and then attack, yeah not convinced.
Sounds? Why are those dumb orca's saying the same thing over and over? Limited evidence to validate the claims made.
And finally shark eyes? I only believe that these would have some effect from my own experience with a 14' tiger, the moment we took eyes off him he bee lined it straight for us, but as long as we kept him in our sights he drifted around the fringe of our visibility. Sneaky bastard.
I like the choice review because it demands third party evidence over the manufacturers claims. Only problem is I can not afford the devices they suggest.
So for me it's gonna be some cheap eye stickers from eBay, and some 3mm ball bearing neodymium magnets set in a silicon base and tucked into the key holder on my leg rope.
Will that stop a white? Not likely, but it might psych out a bull, bronzie or tiger.

Yeah exactly, sharks have no scientific proof or evidence that they have presented to demonstrate that they are being murdered in the millions by humans.
In all your years of surfing how many shark encounters have you had ?
Myself after over 45 years maybe 3 or 4 and that's sightings of decent sharks and paddling so fast I paddled off the front of my board
Reckon the shark would die ffrom laughing when it saw a pair of shark eyes stuck to a surfboard.
if ya want to line the pockets of others who clearly are seeking max profit from minimal investment or effort then go for it.
when I first saw em I thought that's the dumbest thing I've ever seen but it just might be a good business model .
Compare it with someone like rpela who's development costs would have been huge and mark ups small even when finally locking in the final design/product and shark eyes is the perfect business. Risk 0.
So are these shark eyes just stickers or something?
Yes. Smart business model . Sell sticker at 100 x markup
I didn't buy shark eyes for $40.
Instead I went to eBay and got some holographic cats eyes stickers for $10.
No evidence that they will or won't work.
Just my subjective encounters with sharks in the past.
Added up I've had 6 encounters with them when surfing, freediving, spearfishing and sailing.
But I've encountered dolphins hundreds of times.
Will a brown eye stuck on my board work?
Yep,no Shark would be game enough to take that on![]()
Will a brown eye stuck on my board work?
Just make a sticker of your avatar and paste it to your board.
That will not just scare sharks but just about anyone that tries to mess with you ![]()
