I paddled out at the cove in Perth last Thursday lunch time on my sup and a surfer old dark guy about 55 year was arguing with another standup guy and yelling at him to leave the water ( that sup guy had been in line up 1 min and hadnt caught a wave ) also only 5-6 surfers out all gumbos apart from 2 average surfers including DICK head who was a very low skill surfer & waves glassy 1-2 ft . The old angry surfer paddled up to me and yelled at me to leave the area I had been 15m away from him and he paddles up to me. He kept yelling at me to leave area and I told he to go away - By the way I have surfed he for 30 years and live just up the 1km road and a local - this guy lives no where close to this spot and I heard lives in Bali - The Dick pulls my leg rope and I fall off into water and the dIck swims into my face at full speed and throws my paddle 10m away from me - I was a black belt in full contact Karate 20 years ago so felt no threat but was just laughing at the amazing stupidity of this poor old man pretending surfer - anyway as any defensive person would do - I put my hand out as he swam full speed at me and into my hand so I pushed he head under water for about 20 seconds and waited for he to stop swimming towards me as he did after losing his breath.

I am writing this as I personally was never scared for my own safety as I'm a past black belt in karate and could have easily on 5 or 6 times elbowed him in the face and instantly disabled him - BUT luckily for him I am a man of PEACE- But I am very worried this DICK will attack another rider who does not have my self defence skills and they could get badly hurt by this DICK and his his obvious thoughtless love of spearing surfboards in to other peoples faces.

PEACE to all

Seems like there are 2 sides to every story. A shortboarder I know told me a similar story last week. Gotta be the same drama, sounds too similar to be 2 separate incidents! Just for the record, he's not "dark", I think he's in his 40's roughly, not 55, & he's spent a lot of time supping himself, but prefers to ride a shortboard.
His version: sup-rider was sitting out the back, pinching waves off the shortboarders, shortboarder told him to f**k off, supper started belting him over the shoulder with his paddle (JohnnoKeys seems to have omitted that part...), then rest of the story sounds the same, i.e. supper pushing short boarder under water for 20 seconds (as someone else said, that's getting close to drowning), & short boarder belting supper with his board, dinging it in the process.

Don't know about JohnnoKeys holier-than-thou story. Not gaining himself too many friends describing the shortboarder" as a "poor old man pretending surfer.....about 55". Johnno, Ian Cairns is now 61, he's right into sup (if you don't know who he is, you haven't been surfing long), Tom Carroll's 52, possibly hottest supper in the world, & Gerry Lopez is 65, still ripping it up on sups and shortboards. Be careful who you call a "poor old man pretending surfer"
Black belt but valiantly restrained himself?? hmmm........

And as for Legion, who's only seen 4 proficient suppers........mate, you obviously don't get out much. Dave Muir, pro sup-rider, surfs often at South Cott reefies, & many of the local sup-riders are much more skilful surfers than your average short boarder at Seconds or long boarder at Isos. And Tom Carroll, has been seen out at Isos on a sup.

Unfortunately the surfing world has changed a hell of a lot since the Duke passed
In a perfect world maybe but we are a long way from it in our surfing existence
Nice sentiment though. Hopefully you practise what you preach

mollydooka, I mistakenly included that bit and only noticed after but I can't edit my posts. What it should have read was: "I know well four suppers and not one has a water background, including two of them being recent emigrants from landlocked countries". They sup all the time but you can't teach a lifetime of water stuff. I don't surf with them, just converse and know they're keen.

I have seen Dave once or twice but I don't venture to south cott often. Only in massive storms when it's empty as a novelty. I drive past there a lot and watch the inevitable clusterfsck as I go. It's scary, Iso's in particular. Interestingly, the more well run break seems to be Dean St, which wasn't even a break ever before. Sup-only and from driving past it seems there's little conflict.

Apart from that as I said I rarely come across sup riders. I have experienced what Ctngoodvibes described and that was a disaster of kooks. I occasionally see the one or two guys that sup trigg. The one old guy with shoulder length blond hair is OK, although he's not shy about catching lots of waves. There were also a few kooks last year that were not OK. But I generally avoid that break too. But as I said to whoever earlier, I get out a lot more than most so you don't have to worrry about that. Five hours yesterday, five today. Three on a weekday if conditions allow.

This is all very weird.

I've been surfing for over fourty years and SUPing for four years and never really had a hassle except for the occasional drop-in.

I grew up on Sydney's northern beaches (Narrabeen) and spent over twenty years living on the Sunshine Coast (mainly Noosa). These are beaches with very intense local crews!

it seems people are much more aggresive on the roads now and perhaps this trend is overflowing into the ocean.........................

this is a real shame because for most of us the beach is the place where we regain our sanity and where we are able to appreciate the beauty that

surrounds us. Unfortunately aggression is just the antithesis of this..... It is just plain ugly!

See I thought he was talking about cats (or the other type of kitty...)

Seriously though... can we all just get over it. I ride SUP, longboard and shortboard and quite frankly all three have their kooks.

just share the waves... there's enough for everyone.

and another thing... maybe we should all be teaching the kooks (and everyone else who's causing trouble...) a little about surf etiquette.

After all there's only three rules... don't drop in... don't snake... and give everyone a wave...

If everyone followed the rules we could all share the stoke...

Funny thing is if the cove is working then alot of other waves will be working as well. The cove is the only wave south of the groin where SBs can go as further south is LB and more SUP friendly. If the cove is busy SUPs should in my mind anyway stay out of there, a bad accident is a real possibilty.

Well the shortboarders on here certainly win the world profesional winging award..Any true aussie would tell you that the land, the water and every thing in them belongs to everyone so all you pack dogs out there just go chase a stick or somthing..And as far as shortboarders being less dangerous "HA"...Come and watch the mosh pit at Maroubra some day.Thats all, peace and love to all...

Short board, long board ,sup , dosent matter , I ride them all and allso kite
Surfed all my life fir 45 years now and the same rules apply now as it did when there was only one type of SB on the water 40 years ago
No room for Argo on the water , there has always been the dickh---- they all get sorted out eventually
I have struggled to sup on waves back in qld now and have always tried to stay out of the line ups ,a bit of respect from every one on the waves ,doesn't matter if your a oldie like me ,whist been surfing for more years than most , the sup in the waves is harder for me to get in the rhythm and I try not get in the way ,
Just for the record, Having just returned to surfing and Sup back in qld after 25years in WA most on the crews here on both the sunny and GC have been great no Argo at all , great to see

I recall you had a good crew at Poo Hill in the late 80's.
