I thought the red and green thumbs where a good feature of seabreeze.

But now you can only choose green thumbs, why cant we have red ones too?

one of the tedious bits about the stand up zone is you can't just see something and give it a green thumb.....you actually have to type a response

so actually i don't think the "bring back the red thumbs" idea is a good idea......if people object to an idea or concept or topic.....it would be good if they could talk about their ideas rather than just giving the idea a mindless boot in the guts with a red thumb

Its a scale that goes back and forth, so a bunch of green thumbs will outvote 1 red thumb and the scale will remain in the green.

I think its more useful then re quoting something said three pages back that has lost its relevance to the current discussion. Just give it a red thumb and when some bored user is reading a 2 year old thread and sees the poster picked up some red thumbs it goes their credibility.

As an example, Area10 posts some good stuff but also some really poor material that is definitely red thumb worthy and not worth the time it takes to post an argument.

Ten green thumbs equal one red thumb?..........how can you say the opinions of 10 green thumbers are equal to the opinion of one red thumber.
Is probably better to say that the opinionated red thumber is in the minority?

What a load of sheets, if it's not worthy or you supposedly don't have the time to give an argument or alternative then just don't reply.

is a 'red thumb free experience' inline with not marking exams papers in red pen, not being able to use the words girls, ladies, women or guys? perhaps someone is preparing to roll-out a 'Safe Seabreeze Program'

Its the way of the world these days everyone gets a medal no one loses.

Ha! Standup Zone. Was a pretty good site until they kicked everyone off. Now it's literally 99% beginner crap, with the usual know-it-alls chiming in on every single post just to make sure their interweb voice is heard...

Most forums are for the exchange of ideas. They aren't supposed to be a popularity poll. The problem with red thumbs is that it gives a voice to people who have nothing to say, but just want to have a go at someone else, for whatever reason. It can be intimidating for posters and the less forceful personality (who may have something useful to contribute) can feel put off from posting. It's a perfect tool for the moronic bully who wants to wield power without responsibility or effort.

Personally, I rarely notice them. And in fact many of the most interesting posts over the years have been red thumbed to oblivion. So in some ways it is an indication of what should be read rather than what shouldn't. But it's a great shame if their availability means that some people won't bother to post a reply. If you've got something to say, say it, and contribute to the community. As I say, forums are for discussion, they aren't intended to be polls of how many people agree/disagree with a point. If they were, we'd never learn anything from them.

But I don't really care much either way tbh.

Why not just have a vote without the 100 word essay reply?

Area10 has a forceful personality, how could you possibly be intimidated by a negative review of your post? Since you dont notice them why do you bother to reply?

Renewing my call to revive the RED thumbs, lets vote on the credibility.

BTW DJ, green thumbed every one of your vids.

Agree. Red thumbs were good for trolls trying to sell cheap crap, like "ding dong sup lights that attract large marine life", but that's the administrators job anyway, to weed out that sh1t. Green thumbs are great for epic vids and pics (like dogman's), good products (especially locally produced) and normal people coming up with outstanding stuff. Put your name to it if it smells off, makes for good discussion.

Because we learn nothing from a vote. Votes reflect the current state of knowledge, they don't advance it.

For years we were told that eating fat causes heart disease. There were one or two people who argued that this was not the case. They were silenced by the majority who decried them. Now it is becoming accepted that it is sugar not fat that is largely the problem (in this one particular cause of heart disease) and they were right all along. Many people will have died because they followed the majority opinion advice. This does not of course mean that minority opinions are always right. But it is interesting to note how hard it was for the minority opinion to make itself heard, even when it was right. This is the "herd effect" in action.

articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/11/04/saturated-fat-intake.aspx

I am a scientist by trade. I see all the time how damaging it can be to turn discussions into popularity contests rather than reasoned arguments. Votes reflect the current state of opinion. But they also reinforce it: doubters think "well, if 75% of people believe this then it must be true, and if I say something that doesn't agree with this I'll have 75% of people criticising me". So they just keep quiet.

So feedback of the red thumb type alters the nature of the discussion you get, and can stifle innovation and creativity. You have to be very careful with it. Do you want the breeze to be a place of encouragement or of criticism?

Both encouragement and criticism. That is why a balance is needed, red and green thumbs.

For instance, Area10's little humble brag about being a scientist and off topic waffle on about fat is definitely red thumb worthy.

...oh, the 'Zone has a red thumb, it belongs to the Admin.. Step over the line and heave-ho you go.. I had a post disappeared just because I mentioned the 'Breeze..
As stated above, more than a few less reverent Zoners have been banned for good over the years.. Squashed by a lone thumb..

Just sayin'...

I think you are all way over thinking this issue, red thumbs green thumbs who cares, at the end of the day its what a person has to say that matters the thumbs are just a small side note that has very little effect on the actual message

I think admin got rid of the thumbs because the kite surfers were going crazy with them, if any of you have ventured over to the kite forum you will see it's basically just a massive troll fest, a lot of people would get red thumbs on every post regardless of what they had to say which really just serves to make them meaningless anyway.

Bring back the red thumbs and long live the trolls I say !!
At least it's fun that way

Like other topics from SeaBreeze I love to read those topics more than I can leave a response as Aera10 reckons to do it. So I like to thumb , I did it rarely back and most of the time I still do it forth. But rather than an extended literal response which I'm not able to do it I would better leave as response :

So you paddle out to the lineup and a guy gives you the finger, do you want to know why or do you just pretend it doesn't affect you because he didn't verbally say anything.
