I am thinking at my weight of 74kg and 184 cm with reasonable stability I could go a 6'10 and say 26 wide in the Minion. Hmmmmm
Hey ghost, I have 6'10x 25 3/4 x 75liters. I am 5'8 on a tall day and bout 67kgs on a heavy day! The board is so much fun it is ridiculous. I have had so many positive comments even from short boarders out at scabs who generally just give me the evil eye. It's plenty stable for me. Not sure what u ride at the moment but it's similar in stability to a Jp 7'4. At this length you do have a little strange thing with fore and aft stability. When paddling round in chop some times the nose or tail starts to sink. I just find if I stand on a slight angle it ok though and it's only when the waters confused that it's happens. It's the perfect board for me. I can take it and use it in any conditions I've tried so far but I generally don't surf huge waves. The volume floats me easy but I ordered on the safe side. I think once I kill this one I'll get the same one but 70 liters.
Hope this helps with your decision making.
Hi mate,
My go to board for the minute has been the JP 8'2 x 28(really 27.5) PRO. Obviously it is at the shorter end of the modern SUP. I rode the 8'0 in JP a lot and really found little
difference if any between that and my board. I am chomping at the bit to try the 7'0/7'2 and by that I mean trying it in testing conditions.
I get the impression that the effect that you describe in terms of the tail or nose starting to sink would suggest that you are getting to the limiting point for you at least in
terms of volume in a board. I think these boards and any board really that gets to the shorter end of the spectrum tend to be ridden with that split stance to assist in stability.
You make an interesting comparison to the JP 7'4 in terms of stability. How would you compare the two in terms of other features like getting onto a wave.
Cheers mate.
just thought I'd share what fins are supplied by Simon at Deep, unfortunately I have not had the chance to get my new board wet yet as I work on a FIFO set up & didn't get the time.
But it's def something to look forward to
It's about time someone started giving some good fins, when you spend so much on a new board i'd imagine it's nice to not get some cheapo plastic fins

Mate well said. It is a disgrace how the more popular brands seem to provide a poor choice in fins especially if one considers how much is paid for the boards!

especially when one considers how much is spent on a board, if you where spending 1000-1500 you wouldn't mind so much, but when the average board is almost 2000, and a fair bit more if your looking at a new fangled carbon contraptions and they give you a set of fins that cost them about 15-20 bucks max,i'm not sure how much Deep charge for their boards but when they come with a nice set of fins, a great quality board that is made for you while supporting local and they are normally the same price or cheaper than their pop out alternatives, my previous board was a custom DTM it was reasonably cheaper ($400) than the board i was looking at but has to be one of the best boards i have surfed for someone my size, definitely going to have to look at something like this for my next board

The prices of boards are getting stupid
I agree money has to be made, but when the profit is so high I have to think how long will it be before we just say NO
Anyone got any experience in comparing the Minion to an x32 (7'10 to be precise)?
yep, I rode a X32 naish 8'2 or something and to be honest, didn't like it at all. Felt heavy and unresponsive, but only had one surf in onshore 3 foot waves. The minion is heaps more fun, even with less litres- ( mine is 115 ) and is faster and just feels all round better under foot. I have changed the fins to medium sized C-Drives and removed the numbster fin and it feels better.....to me :). Being 7'10 and Im 6'1, Ive learned that the sweet spot is critical and I sometimes have to crawl my toes just a tad back or forward to get it back, other wise I struggle to balance. But its such a fun board!
Hot off the press................these are the new offerings from Deep
Fronts 9, rears mgx1.
Futures bases.
Hi ghost, comparison to Jp 7'4 is that it does everything better. (Sorry Jp!) I personally think the Jp was just to big for me though. It has 90liters of volume and I'm 65kgs. The baby minion catches waves easier. Especially with offshore wind (doesn't get under nose I assume) when things got bigger and faster I felt like I'd have to nurse the Jp in bottom turns a bit (May be lack of skill) but the minion feels so secure I just lay into them with no fear of slipping out and I'm only using fcs k2.1 quad set which is way smaller than supplied fins. Minion turns tighter if I want. Only slides when I want it too. Gives me way more confidence in most parts of the wave. love it and since if had it, it's the only board I take to the beach. Selling my other boards.
To be fair, I just don't think the Jp was the right board for me. I really want to ride a star 7'4 cause I think that will be better for my size, and see how that stacks up against the minion.
Hope this helps again ghost :)
Does anyone have a program to determine how many litres a 6'10 long, 26 1/4 wide and 4 inches thick MINION would be? Just curious. Cheers Ozzie

My Minion is
7"0 x 26 1/2 x 4 1/4 and it comes in at 95L.

I turn my last red 6'5" 27.75" file in a 6'10 long, 26 1/4 wide and 4 inches thick : the master scale shows : 82.9 liters
IMO, does not worth to narrow the board too much otherwise you get rails too chunky and losing advantage of the thin rails.
Need to correlate area/minimum volume/thin rail ...and then find the minimum width you can stand.
I don't agree getting board too narrow otherwise it's loosing many advantages of wide board because i got an extension arm to carve these big and wide shortboard
what is the bottom shape on the minnion? single to double with a channel in the tail? i cant seam to find any good pictures showing it, if any one has one and can take a quick pic i would be interested to see.
Looks like these babies have no deck pads...can anyone give feedback on pros and cons of deck pads on the minions...and what is the best Deck pads to get for these rides..cheers
If there is no deck pad you can spray on Monster Paint texture grip which is way better than wax (leave that old school wax **** to the pronies). Not sure if all of the boards have a kick tail either?
I have gripped and used wax on boards and it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. For surfing both are fine. Minion is waxed with a tailpad. I actually used two tail pads cut to shape to fit the width and give a kick pad across the full tail.
If you grip I suggest you do a pattern or random triangles or squares. It reduces the amount of grip and all the edges seem to increase the grippiness.
With the wax, the paddle picks up a bit of wax as we have some beach breaks here and proning through with the paddle under chest causes a bit of build up.
I think grip might hold a little water, but I am not so good as to have noticed an impact.
Wavesareus the decks of the deep boards are vac bagged so they are strong. I don't use rail tape because the finish doesn't chip and the boards are tough.

No rail tape, and no chips that's a quality board not like the naish ![]()

Even though the minions are the latest lollies on offer, let's not forget Rivera at hundreds less ??

I'm a bit confused on how a vac bagged board has any bearing on the durability of the rails vs others
Trying to decide what size in these minions tempted to go crazy and try 7'8 but I also want to be able to stand on it out the back in chop so tempted for the 7'10 very hard choice I just don't want to be sitting on the board and only stand when a wave comes, defeats the purpose

IMO it's getting tougher and lighter because bagging laminate glass/ resin make it out of oxygen contact so the resin get off in chamically perfect condition. As well it need less weight of resin in ratio resin/glass![]()
