Just trying to help but seriously if you are thinking about moving to Tass especially as a live aboard get a shed or at least a Salar 40.
I do live there 1/2 the year.

I do appreciate your help but it's rather simple. If I had the means for a Salar 40, I would, but I don't. And never will.
The other option of a steel or timber motorsailer is not very appealing.
First job in preparation for the move south will be the installation of a Dickinson (or other brand) diesel heater.
I will be the female equivalent - only far cleaner and rather more comfortable in my 36ft - of the dude who owns and lives aboard Apache down there.![]()
S. Have a look at a wood burning stove
the diesel one are not clean or smell free as one would think
besides it is cultural taswegians burn wood
if you have shore power try ceramic panel heaters. $100 at bunnings
remember winter is coldest time but the opposite to the qld it is also the wettest time so it does rain inside the boat.

Cleaner?? Is he dirty ?

That's a pretty harsh comment about Grants personal hygiene and comfort. And I hope you intend to go engineless in a classic timber Metre boat, not some old clunker!

I'd actually much prefer a wood burning stove for the ambience and aesthetic but, if they're more efficient, even better!
There just don't seem to be many very small ones available in Oz?
I found an English 'Pipsqueak' on Gumtree, however, it sold before I could grab it ![]()
Perhaps I will migrate north each winter? Perhaps I will never make it off the mainland!!
First step is to go down on Wednesday and inspect the VDS. I'm both excited and terrified ![]()
Theres a steel VDS 36 for sale in Tas which already has a diesel heater and a solid dodger.(not quite a wheelhouse but quite cozy) Its basically the same design but a little bit more beam.
Theres an add on gumtree.

Oh Frant! You're back??!!
We each have different experiences and perspectives of people and, indeed boats. Rest assured, whatever old clunker I end up with, she won't be French and the chances of her dropping a keel off, substantially reduced.

It's rough, like very, in the build and upkeep.
Was sitting in a pen with 10deg list to stb and leaning against the pile for a few weeks ??

Has a yellow stripe.
was in top condition when i sold her to the current owner. He did 3 laps of the pacific in her over the past 5 years so she may be looking a bit tired.
As far as being a bad build i was always complimented on the build.
Theselkie do you have a chip on your shoulder? The dude who "owns and lives aboard Apache" is a friend of mine and your comments re his personal hygiene and comfort are unwarranted. Apache is a classic Metre class timber sailing boat without a "Clunking" Diesel engine. The dude sails everywhere so whatever boat you get will be an old clunker in comparison.
And I take it that you will have the keel bolts inspected in your potential "new" 30plus year old boat. However let me tell you that unless you actually drop the keel and have those bolts inspected you will not be aware of any crevice corrosion. Have the chain plates inspected at the same time. Just for peace of mind as that age allows for a high probability of crevice corrosion. This will not be something that the seller is hiding, it's just not visible from a non invasive survey.

Sounds like an interesting fellow you are basing your choices on. Could you tell us more about him and his boat?
This boat https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/primrose-sands/sail-boats/motor-sailer-yacht-pilot-house-from-vancouver-canada/1125999428 has been for sale down here for a while
Fibreglass with a pilot house and a timber heater
Regards Don

My apologies, on what I saw from the dock.
I guess a badly kept steel boat can look bad in every way.
Just reminded me of a very 'rough'boat if you know what I mean
i,m getting a bit sick of the what looks like a "sport " .....how cheap can i buy this yacht ?
Cant help but think how i would deal with an offer way below the advertised price .... there is a line where the offer is just rude ....and deserves the rude response.
My pet hate is when someone puts in an offer way below the advertised price on a yacht owned by a old / unwell person .
My only hope is Karma will win back some revenge in such a case .
One could argue that most boat are way over priced and have been on the market often for over a year.
My guess is there are twenty boats for every buyer.
Its hard to argue against the supply and demand principal.
All assets (houses, shares, cars and boats) are losing value and will sell for 10 percent less in twelve months.
Yes supply and demand is a thing ,for sure . But in the end ,you will get nothing for nothing in this world .
And to coin another phrase , you get what you pay for !
The problem is that it is only worth what someone is prepared to pay
When i sold my Spacesailor 20 it was for a fair bit below what i what it was advertised for but it was the only offer i had received in about 6 months and it was worth taking the low offer so i didn't own 2 boats with the costs associated (Insurance etc) with them
I guess it depends on how desperate you are to sell
The other thing is if someone is prepared to make a offer at least they are interested and then you can negotiate with them but if you give them a rude response you might lose them
Regards Don
It works both ways Donk if the person is interested , and they make rude offer they may also loose the boat they want . To someone not so rude .

Probably best to not let people know you have two boats or have a medical problem. The problem as you mention Don is getting people to look at your boat in the first place. Lots of bargain boats out there but very few buyers! Talking to a friend Sunday who has an immaculate well fitted Jarkan 10 for sale for about 12 months. Had a few inquiries but only one person has actually inspected it.

Hi Romona,
I do appreciate your numerous posts on this site.
Why do you think its a negative to tell buyers you have two boats?

Selling or buying a boat is a business transaction. You cannot afford to let emotion into it. I have always said that if you loose your cool in business, you have lost the transaction.
Mind you, do as I say, not what I do. I am currently p..d off with a potential buyer of my business who low-balled me, but that is only because the sale involves an ongoing relationship.

I can chime in here. It's really about not letting them know your real reason for selling, and giving them an opportunity to prey on any weakness.
About 4 years ago, I found a 1989 VW Kombi for sale. It was pretty rough and needed some work (still does) but they guy who was selling it had an expired visa. He had to leave the following Friday or risk being deported. He wanted almost $6k for the van. I offered half, because in truth, it was about what it was worth. Considering it had QLD Rego, bald tyres, leaking water pump and a bad battery. He refused my offer, but rang me the day before he had to leave and accepted my offer, providing I dropped him at the airport.....
It happens a lot, but I do agree it's poor form to prey on old or infirm owners who have spend their lives looking after their boat and find that they now can't sail it. To low ball them is cruel and really unfair.
Good luck with the search Selkie, hopefully you'll find your new home soon.

I am always interested in how people negotiate and you appear to be ahead of most, but I prefer to build rapport with my seller who is generally aware of your tactics.
If I can show comparative sales, evidence of what other boats sold for, what advantages other boats have that are in competition to his, then if he generally wants to sell, he will meet the market.
What I am trying to do is appease our egos, so that both of us can walk away thinking we have a fair deal, which in time we will believe is a good deal.
We would all like to buy at the bottom and sell at the top of the market but only three percent of us do.
If anyone thinks they will make money out of trading 2nd hand SV they are dreaming , [ brokers excluded ] eventually it [ Karma ] will catch you .
Most yachts are almost like living things , they need love and to be sailed . Not traded like a goddamn bit****coin
