Same deal with SS36. There is the WA built Prestige and then the built by Holiday Boats Bataan, Phillipines SS36.

www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/auction-2430874701.htm

And there are Prestige built S&S39s which are excellent boats, and some built by somebody else also called an S&S39 which aren't.
My beef is that the S&S34 is a well known design with a particular international pedigree. Brokers know this and will call any 34 an S&S if they can get away with it. I know of one owner who contacted me about 10 years ago proud he owned an S&S34. He paid a lot, they were worth a bit back then, and he had bought something totally different that had no pedigree.

Stunning looking Currawong. Wish my interior was anything like this!

Interesting, for sure, beautiful as well, great condition, and fun to sail. The price is a tiny fraction of what they'd have cost to build... For all these perks, they're not my cuppa.

It is pretty common knowledge what happened to the S&S34, (S&S Design 1969) moulds. Anything not built in those moulds is not the well known S&S34 yacht. I don't know why owners and brokers keep trying this on.
Winfield built the moulds in 1967 or thereabouts and built their boats.
The Swarbrick brothers went to the UK and bought them, late 1968 or 69.

I was dead keen on buying this Aquafibre hull SS34, same as Edward Heath's boat. Lot lighter than the Swarbrick boats.

www.ss34.org/index.php/directory/linaii/

That would be a great boat, all set up for single handed sailing. I think Linda an Brian Caldwell did a few single handed voyages in company in their respective SS 34s

Nice old Catalina 38 just appeared on eBay. It's been for sale for awhile and it's one of the more pretty SS yacht designs. Little tatty inside and a couple of abrasions on the side but easy to live with. Not sure what the seller means by hard chine, its got quite a bit of tumblehome in the hull. Looks like it has some of the Bunnings flooring on the cabin sole. I should imagine this is another of the many USA yachts that sail out here and the owners don't want to sail home!

That one has been on gum tree for a while. I understand it is very similar to a S&S38/9

The current owner only bought it a few months back at the Gold Coast.
Apparently selling as the partner wants to buy a house??

It seems that no matter how much of a bargain a yacht might be, they are not good investments.

Cisco you have articulated the problem with such clarity.
Many reasons, probably worth discussing as a topic on its own.

Did you check this one out? The seller is not doing himself any favours with an eBay name of "qualityusedcars" and a feedback of 91.7!

To me that seems like exceptional value. The engine is the only doubtful bit. Needs lots of paint and will need a lot of attention initially but then be a fraction of the maintenance of a steel yacht, If only I was a few years younger.

That's on eBay at the moment as I linked above. Production boat made in the USA, over 300 made. Based on an old S&S racer design modified for family sailing. Some deep keel, some shallow, this one is a deep keeler, I asked! Good fit out, if you do a search you will notice everyone is identical inside. There is a lot of info available online for these. Currently the eBay bid is at $21,500 and reserve is not met. I'm guessing the seller is using eBay to advertise and suspect the reserve is similar to his asking price. If I were younger and contemplating bringing a boat out from the West coast USA this is what I would buy.

Not sure what the story is here but might be worth a phone call for Swanson enthusiasts.

I would cut and paste but for some reason I can not on my yacht computer with Seabreeze! Gumtree Swanson Dart 22 for $200!

Thanks for your thoughts Ramona,
So excuse the greenness of my knowledge but does a deep Keeler make it more like a full keel with a steadier motion at sea ?

The ones built by prestige have a survey stamp on starboard side of v berth. Quality builds and a solid boat.

No it's a fin keel and deep draft well over 6 feet. Deep keel will sail to windward much better and these apparently are good up wind. The shallow draft keels would have the same weight ballast but they suit some cruising destinations better. Both would be good in a seaway and I doubt whether you could feel the difference. Lots of info online. Some youtube videos as well.

woko, It is not a matter of liking steel or not. It is matter of whether one is living onboard full time, has no shoreside committments and is able to keep rust in check on a daily basis.

Plain and simple just a fact of the matter when you own a steel yacht. One needs to be on top of the rust prevention 24/7.

Plenty of time in the navy chipping and painting. Hours spent with a Jason gun! Now I spend several days a week on the water and I'm surrounded by steel yachts. There are more steel yachts here than any other type. None of them I would venture out to sea in! The outside of two of them have rusted out areas of several square feet. I don't want to see inside! Only decent one has been on the hard for more than 2 years, went out for 3months but just keeps extending. The two rusty ones are both exceptionally built boats, one from Germany and the other is the navy boat. Both are semi live aboards too.

The good thing about these sort of comments is they inspire steel boat owners to lift the cabin soles and have a look. It takes years of neglect for boats to get in the condition your talking of. One steel boat in our mooring field was lifted out and taken away it hadn't been touched for 18 years ! The hatches had rotted and the bilges full of rain water. There is still plenty of good examples around. maybe the south coast is extra hard on em

Maybe not an interesting boat but interesting as to what has happened to it.

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing this for sale not so long ago.

Not sure what has caused this but with recent discussions on steel boats this I think is a good example perhaps all boats are susceptible to a bit of "rust".

Whats the brains trust think?

Looks bad initially but would suit someone who likes 'glass work overhead! Done an Osaka race so can't be too bad.

There is a scam on Gumtree when you are selling, where you get a Gumtree message saying xyz is interested in your sale item, please reply directly to their private email sexyxyz@gmail or something similar. My attitude is if you have my number, you can call.
