Good value Tophat on eBay. Transom rudder version and looks pretty good. The Yanmar is probably a YSE8.

Never seen one with a transom hung rudder. Why would anyone do that?

From the ad it seems there are other Tophats in that configuration. I'm fairly sure the Tophat fans on this forum have discussed transom hung rudders previously. It may have something to do with the inboard diesel installation.
Someone over there was looking for something similar to this a while back..........if still are it could be of interest. This would go like fertilizer off a shovel.

Wow. Needs some work, but brilliant boats. A good one is still close to the fastest thing of its breed alive, as you know. I was lucky enough to have a run on the first one (I think) Rapid Transit and on the first really wicked one*, Shoot The Dog. For me, the fact that they had some interior and could sail offshore put them in a different bracket to later sportsboats. YMMV
(Wicked as in a boat with the wick lit, not evil)
Yes recall Rapid Transit. There's a Young 780 centreboarder sailing out of BBYC and it is a great all rounder - see here chasing a J70 to the bottom mark. Never thought Jim Young got the credit he deserved in the Kiwi brigade but might be wrong.

A great all rounder in that size range as you say, hasn't aged a bit. There is more bang for the $ in that size of boat than any other imho - the Masrm 720 was a good example of this but it didn't have the break away reaching speed of the Y780.
This looks like it represents good value though has been used a lot from the description,

Good one! I leased Nadia for a year before we purchased our current boat. Basic fit-out, but lots of fun to sail.
This Whiting quarter tonner is still for sale and has had a reduction in price.

Yep, I'm fairly sure she was raced around Pittwater lots years ago.
The prices of yachts generally seems to be holding up from what I can see, but the IOR mastheaders without sumptous interiors seem to be the exception, as shown by some of the 3/4s (Bountys, Carters etc), this Holland and others. Maybe they don't attract the dreamers but they seem to be where the value is (IMHO).
That's a steal! Headsail foil, probably was a keen club racer.
Crikey. $1500 gets you a near new Nanni engine, but you'll need to dispose of the packaging.
There will probably be a very original Clansman in superb condition on an excellent mooring for 12 grand near me for sale shortly.

If the sails are anything like OK in general it could be a great little boat at that price.
Dunno what's the story here!

I don't think the vendor does either.
Nice easy project. The MD7 would be cheap and easy to rebuild. Needs sails and some very simple interior woodwork.

Imagine the drag (especially with that fat anode on the central one)!

Rudders are only short. Probably about the same surface area as a normal single blade. The centre rudder would be ideal for motoring.
What are aluminium hulls like for maintenance, other than the usual 18 month anti fouling?
Are they like a an old steel hull, a sleeping corrosion issue.?
I would think they are a noisy hull, with waves lapping under sail and at anchor?
Cheers....
Georg Nissen designed some pretty good racing boats so he doesn't seem to have been the sort of guy to ignore drag if it was going to cause problems. That is a damn nice boat.

What yacht manufacturer and naval architect designed model are you talking about?
Like any hull built out of any material there are pros and cons. Expect you would have searched and found many such articles as these;
yachting-pages.com/articles/aluminium-boat-hulls-vs-steel-boat-hulls.html
www.godownsize.com/common-problems-aluminum-boats/
Aluminium hulls are not a sleeping corrosion issue but don't drop an item with a high % of copper into the bilge......
These French builders specialise in aluminium yachts and this article has notes on electrolysis which you would have seen.

As regards noisy hull - there are easy fixes as you would have seen

Aluminium has about 1/3 the elastic modulus as steel so panel deflections of an equivalent scantling design aluminium and steel panel are 3x greater for the aluminium case.
Obviously a suitable marine grade aluminium alloy needs to be used - Pechiney produced many marine use documents for aluminium till they were taken over by idiots in 2003

Thanks r13, You are a wealth of knowledge and information, like many on the forum. When I get the chance I will have a read of the links you have provided. I have always wonder about an aluminium boat, permanently in the water. The above yacht with 3 rudders, made me ask the question.
Many Thanks, Cheers....

My mates alloy Cole 42 has the topsides back to bare metal and he easily gets 2 years out of the antifoul. Corrosion is not a problem if you use the right antifoul and don't use too many anodes. Very quiet at sea and at the mooring.

This Cole 28 is back with a reduced price. Minor starting problem but it will be a minor problem too.

Nothing like the skipper sweeping the cockpit side to side with the tiller when it gets a roll up on a plane downwind with a kite up! Got to love tillers though :).
