Women need to understand that as men get older they have far fewer hobbies and significantly less close friends and whilst his might be OK for 5-10 years, things will go pear shaped at some stage if they don't have an interest. I've seen friends and family break up their families because they are willing to sit down and discuss their feelings. Midlife crisis or just waking up one day sick of being miserable? It goes both ways of course.

There does have to be a compromise on our behalf (hence why i leave the water at 5pm during the week) and if pull your weight around the house, with the kids and make sure your wife is happy (massage vouchers etc) life works out pretty well and you don't wake at 40, 45 or 50 miserable.

What are these GPS thingys? I want one.

Garmin Fenix 3 is a very portable watch like GPS and it auto uploads to a website via your smart phone.

... my GPS thingy is Garmin Quatix watch! BTW, these GPS thingy's will awaken the inner nerd

I use a Garmin 910XT fully waterproof had it for nearly 4 years now and recorded nearly every session, bike ride, swim surf or run. I feel lost without it.

You get over looking at yourself on maps pretty quickly, but motivates you to go a bit further/faster etc.

Pretty useless for surfing though (Rips curl watch prob better) but surprisingly easy to cover 5-10km in a surf session...

you married guys have got to grow a pair or get shut of them, easy

Lol it's so easy, sure. As Eppo said, the wife's not the problem, she always supported my kiting, it's the kids that change everything. You can't turn them off. 24 x 7. And to be honest if you love them enough (as most do) you put your own enjoyment behind theirs, and take pleasure in things they enjoy. It happens naturally, and it's great except that your time gets squeezed, and kiting is low hanging fruit. I'm SUPing a lot instead, because it's accessible for the whole family.

Kept a session log for all of 2014 just out of curiosity... by the way we lived on the beach at one of the best surfing/kiting/sailing spots that year!

Kite: 113

Windsurf: 23

SUP surf: 117

Short board surf: 70

Mountain Bike: 19

Note: Most of my days start with a dawn SUP, then wind stuff in the afternoon, and usually another surf. Doesn't hurt that I technically only work 10 days a month. (Fire Dpt.) This year I was too lazy to keep the log but it was a fun experiment.

well done for being a firey total respect

Hi Peeps,

Kiting since 2000. From 2001 to 2010 as a kite school owner/operator, I kited every day there was wind. From 2011 until now, being in a retail premises, I have kited a dozen times per season .... until now.

Renovating a house, looking after the kids and running a business doesn't leave much time to kite. However, my new partner is VERY supporting of my kiting, surfing and paddling so am hoping to be out for a record number of days this year. Been diggin' the kiting thus far.

Wife, two young kids and a demanding management job. I work hard for my family. I like them to be happy and they support my kiting. I get 70 to 80 sessions per year. Always want more but I can live with it. Living close to the beach helps me because I don't waste travel time and you know what the conditions are.

This topic is not really about how often do you kite ?

It seems to be about how pussywhipped some of you are.

Its not pussy whipped....its being a great Dad/Husband....

in reality most real men don't mind giving up sessions to take the kids to soccer or to friends houses.
I know the cook loves a bit of family time too.
Check the wind charts....plan family stuff around the wind ( if possible )
Or stay single and get old and lonely with just yourself to keep you warm at night

Just ran this by the misses....she said all Good.

Heres the deal needed to impliment ......
The trade off is for every hour sugarlips spends in front of the mirror or time spent beautifing herself = 1 hr of kiting .
This includes shopping hours.

Also anytime sugarlips has a headache = 4 kiting hrs.
Another way to get more kiting time in is teach the kids to kite.
Even better if they grown up moved out and big and ugly enough to look after themselves.
Last 8 days i kited 7...chose to knock back a 40kt day to drink beer and recover from fatigue.

Middle Age Men Syndrome Fn Funny,

I kite as often as I can I live and work near the water I have my gear in the back of the car on the way home from work I do a "Power Sesh".

That is go absolutely nuts for an hour and then get back in. I am a Tech Teacher now and I have the time after school to do it. 10 Weeks of Holidays is good too.

The Missus understands I need to let it out because... I am the main cook in the house and I am not so grumpy after a Sesh.

I changed careers to have more time with my family and that change is now paying off. I have way more time on the water but no way near the amount of money.

Everyone can't have everything in life and the family balance is hard.

I kite at least 3 times a week... SUP 2 sessions a week... If not I ride a bike to work... But I am still fat as my students say....

You kited 7 days out of 8,so what you are saying is your misses has a lot of headaches?

Maybe you should spend some time ( in front of the mirror )beautifying yourself

Sounds like we need to establish a kind of kiting "Mens Shed" where we can share our feelings for the betterment of our mental health & families :)

cant be be that hard to arrange ?

how about a post downwinder therapy session @ Trigg, mid week, with small "participation" fee for a few cold beers ......
