Shouldn't this be in the WA section?
It is! The kitesurfing section relates to WA.
What 400m looks like on a big day at Margs.
Bit off topic here but, can you surf or kite the right hand of margs point break? It looks like you can from the pic you've put up. (I've never been there but am in awe of those close to it)
I'm looking forward to this education campain. I want to learn how to complete a S-Bend air pass transition with lifejacket on followed by a flare release. I'm sure it will get everyones attention on the beach.
just out of interest how far from the shore are the yellow boys at melville. it seams that is more then 400m from memory.
err melville is inland . These laws do not apply . And the yellow buoys at melville are around 50m offshore
Ahh that's good. i meant the yellow buoy that's quite far out in line with spey Rd, not the yellow buoys in the water start area.
I don't have an issue with this. I love kiting, and this will sort itself out. There will be gear (i.e. a market) that arises, and the majority of us will accept, so we keep kiting. No big deal.
this whole thing reminds me too much of the shark cull. its basically a pissing into the wind competition from a few pollies who have no idea what they are talking about. Just like the shark cull it will have basically zero effect on anyone anywhere. I support people taking extra safety measures and if you want to wear a lifejacket then go ahead. The practicality of enforcing this is where it all falls apart. How are they going to measure your 400 meters offshore. How are they going to identify non compliant kiters that don't return to the same spot. How many water police and DoT officers are they going to have standing on the beach arguing with kiters. This thread is probably the most action that this new law will ever see.
First thing I'm doing when I get back out on the water is tacking out 401 metres without any "safety" equipment just to feel that rush! ![]()
If you read the Victorian government info for kiters they state a few things:
AS approved life jackets
Right of way rules etc...
But this one is the best of all:
5 knot speed limit from the beach to the boating markers (and I now quote) "kite boarders must body drag to beyond the boating markets"
Imagine if they enforced that one!

What are the penalties for offences anyway? Are there any lawyers in here who've actually seen the legislation?
Considering that the law around boating in certain sizes boats requires you to have PFD's when in open water, don't you think its halve obvious that the same should be considered for kiting more then 400m offshore?
Still waiting for you to tell us what the typical Vic set up is...
The VIC setup is: Not giving a fck. ![]()
I have won the tender to give out fines and penalties.
First offence is a $25 on the spot fine.
Second offence is a $50 fine and we hang you to a drum line.
Third offence is a night with Nobs.
