I agree , I can't remember the last time I saw a kite video that made me want to go buy a kite or board. I try to look at things pretty open minded and if I was a major kite company or board company that's what I'd expect from my riders in return for gear. I remember back in the day we would watch unhooked and unhooked 2 before every session just to pump us up to try harder, and that's the type of video that makes you go buy new gear

Being a good kiter is only part of a deal for a sponsorship,it's a 2 way street for both parties, enjoy your kiting but treat it as a hobbie and anything else that comes your way is a bonus.

Best option is to start your own brand, then your name is always right there. Works for Robbie Naish and he is pretty up himself too.

Hey Leo -

As this is an Axis Advert the magazine has absolutely nothing to do with the layout of the page (they just drag and drop it into the mag as delivered by Axis). As opposed to editorial content when they would credit rider/photographer etc.

If you are a sponsored rider you should have in your contract a paid price and product renumeration list as part of your contract.

This list has incentive milestones with amounts and renumeration - paid by the company to you.

Really not sure why you would whinge re- this type of thing..? You just call the sponsor and arrange payment / new stock for the next seasons stock delivery.

Agree with a previous comment - this was a great way to give Axis a whole lot more coverage... Those poor guys at Axis must be really pissed with you.. Axis.

I'm sponsored by the company that I work for....

I'm out kite boarding during the week while they are still paying me to be at work. I definitely don't want any pictures with my face of name anywhere if there is a time and date stamp.....

This is funny - cant believe I am reading this crap - kiteboarders are so precious, in my opinion very few in Australia deserve any form of sponsorship - maybe 2 or 3 in total? The amount of return to the company in question in most cases I know doesn't warrant it.

some top ASP surfers cant get enough sponsorship

Hey Leo,

Didn't Axis and Ozone/Kitepower take you on an epic tour of West Oz without you having to put your hand into your pocket? I think you have been paid in full, in fact, you may owe your sponsors, I doubt if your contribution in the ad would have covered half of the trip.

Here is a tip to aspiring pro kiters. Sponsorships are contractual agreements. The sponsor gives you gear and helps you out so you have all the tools to shine in the sport you have talent in. You owe them back. You are not doing them a favour by being sponsored, they are doing you a favour. If you want to really contribute to the relationship you have with your sponsor, give them stuff they can use ie, photo's, video's, write editorials for mags (which you can, incidentally get paid for). Gabby Steindl used to be a prolific writer for her brands and toured (mostly at her own expense) to remote and exotic destinations so she could write travel pieces for mags. It wasn't enough for her to save money and become wealthy, but she lived the dream for many years, but she worked her arse off to get it.

News flash! You are never going to get rich from kiting. If you can get paid to go to comps and have fun living the dream and get free kites and boards and gear, you are already at the top. There are thousands of aspiring pro wanna be's in the world. You need to be insanely talented, even more so that the other thousands who are also really talented if you want enough to go full time pro.

If you want a sponsorship as opposed to being a pro, get pro-active (pardon the pun) and give a sponsor reasons to help you out. As a professional courtesy, you rarely hear of pro athletes bagging their former sponsors, even if it ended badly. Any new sponsors wouldn't want to be associated with someone who bad mouths their brand.

Just my 2c worth.

Leo - I have to agree with Action sports here man and say one thing.

DO NOT COMMENT ON OPEN FORUMS, NEVER EVER BAG ANYONE IT IS THERE FOREVER AND SPONSORS "HATE IT".

The smartest way to do it is under another avatar or name have someone else do it. Never do it openly, apologize publically ON THAT FORUM and move on.

I have worked with many sponsored skaters and the best ones are extremely professionsla and polite and never bitch complain or moan.

THEY ONLY USE THEIR REAL ONLINE NAME TO ADVERTISE THEIR OWN BRAND AND IMAGE AND NEVER COMMENT.

I will tell you this if one of my guys did what you did, thats their career and free stuff gone for good. I would definanlty behind the scenes make it known that the guy should not be touched and other sponsors would 99% of the time agree.

Bit of concrete is needed BRO.

You are an insane rider, dont spoil it with this rant (spelling and grammer aside).

your portugese is ****house mate and apparently that's your native language.

Trolling 101 .

When attempting a troll , ensure your spelling and grammar is correct , even more so when trying to insult someone in your native tounge which is not the native language of the person you are attempting to troll.

IE punheteiro instead of punheteros . As when someone googles it and finds you have misspelt it it just screams of this

In October last year one international magazine published one full page advert off my board sponsors in the time whit me on it but didn't put my name as a rider !

I'm crying for you, on a side note.....
842 million people continue to struggle with hunger every day.
1.2 billion people still live in extreme poverty — on less than $1.25 per day.
Each year, 2.6 million children die as a result of hunger-related causes.

Its a conspiracy...

They liked the shot, but not so much the personality behind it.
Link the cool move to the brand, not the person as he's not really an ambassador
to the brand's image.

point already proved.

And? They deserve more sponsorship why??? I know a lot of talented people from many different sports (skateboarding, BMX, Surfing) that don't get any sponsorship at all, let alone "enough". Surfers in Australia were just lucky to once be in a situation where they basically had money thrown at them, other sports were never that lucky. That aside, I think that what Leo said about not putting his name on the ad is true in a way, I agree that the brand or magazine should always caption the rider as should they caption the photographer. However bringing up the situation in this manner is far from a respectable way of doing things and ultimately will make no difference to the situation what so ever.

why - because simply it is a much larger and more popular sport / industry with a lot more available $$ - im talking top tier here- as far as surfers in Aus having $$ thrown at them? your far from reality mate.

The point of being sponsered by a company
Is to promote that company . What's it matter if your name doesn't appear in a picture you know it's you so what's the problem .

Hey Leo,

As long as you got paid for the appearance in the ad, ^^^

the missing name thing matters not.

But if you got stiffed for the money,

then you were raped by the Brand.

Sort of sad what's going on here, an obviously very talented rider, probably better than anyone who has posted sofar, loses his cool over a company he has some argument with and airs the dirty laundry.....after which every one is happy to put the boot in, also pretty uncool.
Others would also say, there is no such thing as bad publicity.
