Just got back from staying at the Prama Sanur beach hotel which is right next to the RipCurl kite beach area...
Very nice and the room with the best pool, palm tree and ocean panoramic views with people kiteing, is The 4th floor room 809.

A big kite with a good Bottom end is your best option - I took my old 15m Epic Infinty lightwind kite with 25 & 20m lines that worked great worked great when the wind blew stronger...
Take a powerful 12 or 13 if you have one..
The Ripcurl spot has compressor to pump your kite :) but give them maybe $5 for the day or 50,000 Bali money to show your "lower back " appreciation ;)
Have fun !

Will be taking a 12 & 17, TT & SB, know the ripcurl spot all too well, I pump up myself then go and give them 10,000 for a nice cold bintang, need to rehydrate before going out

Hey look at the wind graph on this - it's probably the most accurate... Add a few knots for cloud generated wind etc

Understand there has been wind there last week.

Anyone done down winders on a south easterly?
I've done it from Rip Curl to north end of Sanur, anyone gone further?

Man Lombok are expensive, Stayed elsewhere in Indo for 7 days and airfairs for the same price.

Had a 12m in bali ( sanur) last year. It hit 20knts but could only ride a 17m, ( Hired ) 85kg & sufboard.

We were there 2nd week september. You can travel around to Cagganu and get cross off, side shore and ride 10-12m kites. Its a long way in a car 1-2hrs. You can travel to the top of the island and ride 8m kites, Bloody long way in a car 4-5hrs, Better to stay overnight.

Bali is the land of Big Kites.

IMO - Big kite and someone else's board is best combo for Sanur - unless you've already got a big old scratched twin tip

Hey Robbie,
was out in the shed tonight trying to decide what to take.
Finally decide on an old knee board I took over there a couple of years ago, needs longer fins though. Might bring a skim board as well. Dont want to wreck any of my good boards.

Got rid of my twin tips.

Have put a home made bridle on the big kite to gain a bit more bottom end. Might take a bit longer to get to Occ's but will be heaps better in the waves than the old Zephyr.

... I remeber that board, good one, good choice!

What fin boxes does it have, I got a few FCS fins you can borrow, size 4 and 5's ie the bigger ones you can use. Can't remember if it was tri or quad fin?

Not sure its a good choice but its one that has been run on reefs at Balian and Sanur and looks worst for wear. Probably twice the weight that it use to be with all the bog in it. Will put in some epoxy for repairs this year

Its a tri Robbie, if you have a set of old 5" FCS I'll be more than happy to buy them off you? Or cut them out in Bingtangs

What to spend heaps more time over at Occ's this year.

HAAK bin the kneeboard, remember the kneeboard didn't work last time in Balian or Sanur, bigger fins won't help, it's got too much rocker, too wide, shaped for "kneeling" low centre of gravity, it's shaped to turn rail to rail not shaped to turn off back foot like a surfboard is, just grab a cheap second hand 6' board. I know where's there's a free one in Balian.

I'll give you 40 bucks for the taxi up there to get it. Then I'll have a board when I arrive, plus you can get a sail while up there.

... mmmm maybe its not the board I remember then, I remember a board with red rails with plain unpainted deck,,, not that one is it???? Why not bring ya airush surfboard?

I put bigger fins in a board thinking it would improve upwind but it didn't, just made it more squirrily and track less. It did improve in some minor area's but over all no improvement.

You can try my Nugget, see what you think then try Eddie's older one and see the differences, the older ones rock but the newer ones can hold more power and speed!

Tone one sets sail this sat btw!

How do you master those things? A friend lent me one last summer, and I immediatelly set off on the longest downwinder because I couldn't hold ground!?

I might keep you up to the offer of the nugget.

the airush is staying in the shed, too good to trash.

I had one with orange rails but no longer have it, recked it after a flat landing .gave it to a new guy to learn on.

decided on an old surfboard that i forgot about, use to enjoy it in small waves.

Has tony put a kite launch deck on the yacth

... I kited from Sanur to Nusa Dua a couple times and so long as you stay away from the millions of scary jetski's with tourists who have no idea how to drive or para-sailing boats who don't care you have only certain angles you can go, yes it is a great cruising spot and on big swell days you can get some nice little 3 foot waves there. Much better spots back in Sanur so would recommend you hang there rather than Nuas Dua. Mind you, across the harbour channel is Serangan and man you can get some monsters there,,,, nearly drowned there taking on a bigger wave than I was capable of taking on, one of them ate me for breakfast,,,, sooo lucky my kite stayed in the air for the duration, infact was the only reason I finally got air,,, felt like I only had seconds left in my life. Can't wait for this year!

... no worries, we'll have my newer nugget, Eddie's slightly older nugget (which is a gem), you can have a crack at,,,, be careful though,,, your gunna want one. And of course you can try the Dyno too!

Pish posh, your not gunna trash the airush, just use it on the high tides and borrow a TT for the low tides. My guess is that the surfboard your thinking of bringing won't have the upwind abilities of the Airush and because the currents being pretty strong pulling downwind you'll need all the upwind abilities you can get your hands on, especially if your kite isn't really an upwind machine. Bring it,,,, you can always bog it up later!!!!! Your in Bali for a couple weeks, so ya might as well have the best stuff.

Nah, no launch pad on Tone's boat,,,, yet! He's planning to hit all the famous wave spots on his way to Bali, and taking a month doing it!!!

cheers for now,

Robbie :)

Whats this TXT thing you talk about

Must admit i thought it was becoming a bit like days of our lifes a few days ago.

You must forgive us, we seem to get a bit excited this time of year.

I blame Surfer 62, he shouldn't started this thread.

Anyway, catch you boys up there.

Haha - Yeah , there should be Bali section at this time of the year !

HAAK - you are welcome to a shot on the old girl - she has seen better days but we are a team . Bring your board though - whats the point of keeping it in a shed ? It must be miserable

Small sharing of stoke - had my first kite in 4 months today since coming to Nias . The zephyr and the patched up old nugget and slightly damaged old bloke had a blast . Nice crumblywind swell , slightly depowered , big crowd of locals checking out the bule , big smiles on faces of the kids. Happy bule.

Hi guys,

to introduce this new kitesurfing spot just across the Bali Strait from Bali, we are organising a FREE kite camp on Tabuhan Island in Banyuwangi. The dates are Saturday August 09 and Sunday August 10.

Tents and bedding will be provided. Free local food. Free mineral water. Beach barbecue. We will arrange the transfers from Banyuwangi airport or from Ketapang ferry port to the location.

Tabuhan Island is a little island laying in between Java and Bali. We have wind between May and the end of November. I would call this place the Tarifa of Southeast Asia, because the trade winds get funnelled between the island just as in Tarifa :)

Garuda flies from Bali to Banyuwangi every day at 07.20 am in the morning. Or you can get to Ketapang by car, taking one of the many car ferries departing Gilimanuk. From Denpasar you can reach Ketapang in about 4-5 hours. Flying goes much quicker :)

Please bring your own gear, preferrably your small kites as we normally have over 20 knots of wind!

Contact details provided on the event flyer! We look forward riding with you!

Greetings Jeroen
