I think my Mrs is gunna try and line me up to buy a Thermomix.

I don't like the price tag.

Are they actually any good?
Gimme some genuine feedback if you have any.

Cheers

I didn't like the price tag at the time but now I'm glad we have it, I use it all the time. It's like cooking for dummies, it's very hard to get wrong and we get some nice food out of it.

As above if you're clueless at cooking then it's fantastic.

I don't think anyone could actually be that clueless at cooking? To need to spend 2K on a pot that also stirs?

They are well made and not a piece of junk. It's not for me, but I enjoy cooking.

We bought one about 8 years ago, best kitchen utensil ever. It's just so handy. We use it a couple of times a day.

Need rice? Chuck the rice and water in the thermomix and press "Go". Perfect rice 18 minutes later.
Want white sauce for your lasagne? Chuck the ingredients in and press "Go". It's ready when you are.
Run out of peanut butter? Throw a few handfuls of peanuts and one of almonds in there and a minute later you have peanut butter.
Need caster sugar? Put normal sugar in there and blitz away.

That's what I use it mostly for anyway, the missus uses it for all sorts of things.

It might not be for everyone, but for us it's awesome. Really well designed, proper engineering in it, we would find it hard to live without.

Hope this helps.

Been thinking of it too. I think the biggest case for getting one is that everyone I know that has one swears by it, whether they're good cooks or not. The only thing stopping me is tossing up if I want to lose the bench space.

I still don't get it. It still seems like just a pot that stirs. Most recipes are as simple as adding the ingredients, stirring a bit and watch the clock.

It's a massive no from me... a $2000 blender... this: www.accc.gov.au/media-release/thermomix-ordered-to-pay-penalties-of-more-than-46-million

However, if it makes her happy and the outcome is snacks for Bertie... well, go for it

Nebs what if you want to do a couple of those things at the same time? You can't. I can use my $30 rice cooker from Target that's lasted 10yrs so far, and make a white sauce on stove at the same time. Slow cooker is my most used thing apart from in summer I guess.
For those who truly can't cook - veggies in over or microwave and fry fish or steak. You could do that for ever and be quite healthy.

I get they're probably useful but the cost is massive.

What, no pressure cooker? Looooove my pressure cooker. Slow cooked meals in half an hour.

Hmm, so sounds like a really big overlap with her $1000 Vitamix blender then yeah?

I'm still not sold... i'm pretty good at cooking rice in 20min with just a pot!!
And the only real exercise I do these days is mixing by b?chamel sauce by hand! Lasagne making is my jam!

Are you sure she's not out to make you redundant? If you start getting pop-up ads for a certain other 'appliance', it might be time to start worrying.

Once I have proper microwave , I possibly don't need any other cooking tools any other cooking utensylia anymore in life.
I cook and warm everything , including cakes and grilled meat .
But that is me lazy cook with iron clad stomach.

Obviosly there is still place for improvements and on my with list is
THERMOMETER.
One contactless and another on stick to get inside food.
With smart programming to allow set and observe desired temperatures. For example the main problem with cake is burning from inside when baking, cooking.
Simple thermeter plug in inside will allow to avoid temp rising above one setup and safe in the middle of the dish.

If it keeps her quiet/happy & I lets me buy more foiling gear - it's a big yes from me...she is now on her 2nd Thermomix (I don'tparticularly like the food cooked in it...good for smoothies only imo).
Only problem is I can't decide on what new foil will go with the new thermo?

Had one for about 6 years now and would not be without it. As for the comments about it just being a heated mixer I think your missing the point about its ability. If you go into a commercial kitchen these days just about every one of them uses Combi ovens which you could just say its a oven that steams which it is but used correctly does so much more than just cooks and is a must have in most kitchens. New equipment making their way into commercial kitchens are things like Frima cookcentres which is just a Bratt Pan but used correctly can replace half the cooking equipment in a kitchen. The need to cook at the same time is not always needed as well and the Thermomix is not necessary used to replace equipment rather than to do controlled cooking which can simplify the cooking process. Horses for courses I guess and if you want to cook authentic then you could just use a stick with an open fire. I mention commercial kitchens as that's where a lot of equipment technology comes from and the steam ovens in a lot of domestic kitchens are the result of the Combi oven technology filtering down.
If you have a lazy $2000 and enjoy cooking then its a good long term investment.

Macro,
I was at a trade show in the US a few years ago and one of the things that won an award for best innovated equipment was a microwave that used AI and a new type of magnetron to heat the chamber. It could heat multiple items at the same time and they could have different densities and moisture content and they would cook evenly without burning. It meant you could put a pie and a bowl of soup at the same time and the unit heated both to serving temperature.
It was still in development and the company that was developing it said it would only be a few years before it was being released into the commercial market.

Is that what society has become ?

In 1521 King Manuel creates the first public postal service
In 1621 the Mayflower sails for the new world
In 1721 Franklin worked out how to harness the power of electricity
In 1821 Stephenson invented the steam locomotive and set off the industrial revolution
In 1921 Flemming discovered penicillin and started modern medicine

In 2021 some dude worked out how to re-heat a pie and a bowl of soup at the same time....

everyone I know who has one says they are really good. Everyone who says they aren't worth it- have not owned one, and/or have time to do things slower.

When you have kids, and don't have a help team, any time saving appliance makes a difference- so if you can afford it, get it done.

Like a dishwasher... once you have one, you appreciate it and wonder why you didn't have one before. And you just chuck the thermomix bowl in the dishwasher when you are done. Get a second bowl.

Yeah sure, we have one. I was skeptical at first, but its by far the most used appliance in our kitchen aside from the microwave and sink, and is going strong after 8 years.

Nah - just an expensive toy

Total waste of money. Buy a decent blender and food processor instead and let the stove do the work.

I get extremely suspicious of expensive things you have to buy from " independent consultants, who hold 'Cooking Experiences'"

It would be interesting to know how good the $350 alternative is.
