Manuals are like analogue, DVD's or CD's......... a thing of the past as better is now wanted by the public and available.

Hmmmmm, I'm getting old lazy and stupid, a good modern auto suits me down to the ground. But I have very fond memories of really driving. Being in total control of what's getting delivered to the wheels, in stead of leaving it to the car. If you've never had this you've missed out on a great driving experience.

Yeah, fun is a thing of the past.
BTW, the other half, who by all stereotypes shouldn't be on the roads, drives stick as a way of being aware of her speed.

You mean like when you have to get out and push? That's when you really are in control of the car.

Don't worry, Lotofwind is no doubt one of those people that wants an auto so that he can check the latest stupid post on facebook or instagram instead of watching what he is doing. He needs to check seabreeze a lot too when driving to see when Markaus posts so that he can stalk him, and a manual would make that very difficult.

Contrary to what you would expect, I think driving a manual makes you more aware of your surroundings and probably a better driver. I remember going from a 5 speed manual to a 4 speed auto with cruise control and it felt like the car did all the work and made it easier to vague out... and this was before smart phones were on the scene.

I can't imagine staying awake in a self driving car as there would just be nothing interesting to keep me awake.

WOW, I cant believe some people still own cars that you have to spin around a little handle to make a window open lol.
Must be really safe cars, by todays standards, to be out on the highway with the rest of us.
Im guessing your phones also have a spiral curly cord thingy attached to a block with a round dial thingy as well???

Manuals are like analogue, DVD's or CD's......... a thing of the past as better is now wanted by the public and available.

They originally made automatics for the uncoordinated - ends up there now for people who want to take an easy option - a bit like kiting

Yes. This right here.

No-one should be allowed to get a license if they drive and can't pass the test in a manual.

Y'all can whine all you want but manuals are becoming a thing of the past. The same with petrol and diesel engines.
Most the big car company's have planned to completely stop building petrol/diesel vehicles within the next 5 years.
Great and exciting time to be alive.

I don't care if most cars are auto or electric as long as there are good used manual cars out there to buy. Interestingly, many sport cars still come with manual transmission.
I think there will be a niche for manual cars for many years, which is good for people who like driving manual cars.

lotofwind, are you going through a windless spell or you never learned how to properly drive manual cars and feel bitter about it?

Na, I have a manual license, and got it when you actually did driving tests too, not when you were just given one from the local police station lol.

But like it or not manuals are being phased out like analogue.

You remember when people were given licenses from a police station? You must be old and live in a remote area.

I don't think anyone really cares if manual cars are being phased out. Its clearly from market demand, so if the market doesn't demand it, who is to care?

There will always be enthusiast cars, whether they are manual or simulating manuals.

Didnt you guys get you license from the police station back then ??
My mates grandfather told us that was how it was done in your guys generation?
That you just had to go to the police station and drive around the block once with an officer and they just gave you a license.
But I guess there wasnt as many cars on the road then, and the cars probably didnt go as fast.

Did you say "mate's"? I am not sure I believe you.

What's the story, do they give away licenses for bananas where you live?

It was true out in the country. The farm kids didn't even have to do the drive around the block.

Back to motor/gearbox efficiency sweet spot. When it comes to electric motors, they must have a speed at which they use fewest joules/rev, so is there any kind of gearing being put in between the motor and the diff?

Yeah, I have heard this, although I am sure the 'farm kids' got their license because the cop knew that they had been driving since they were small. If I were a cop I would make them drive around the block anyway just so that you could say that you tested them.

I think lotofwind is giving away his real age and was probably one of those.

I think electric motors do not have a sweet spot and the torque is constant at their RPM range. There must be some gearing though to match their max speed with the intended max speed of the car.

There was a DIY electric car conversion business somewhere in Aus. I think they kept the existing gearbox, but probably more for convenience.

When they invent an auto transmission car that can be push started, I might buy one.

You can bump start an auto. If you can push to about 60km/h.

Trust me. I lived inland. I was a townie. Parallel parking was in a space 30 or 40 metres long outside the town library. I had to reverse park into the same space. The blokes in my year who lived on farms did not get tested at all

^^^ Yeah some people slip through the cracks and shame they were not tested when they were young.

Lotowind, for example......

I was looking (dreaming) the other day about a new v8 79 series landcrusier. I noticed they only come in manual, which is somewhat supprising. I would of thought they'd just drop the 200 series auto box into the 79.

Incase anyone was wondering a 2021 landcruiser ute isnt much different to my 2005 one apart from the v8 and the grille.

It's called "the rebound effect". Make trucks easier to start and everybody gets one.

Crank starting..... thats hilarious, its like something off The Flintstones. lol.

Most of us now days start our car and set temp. control using our mobile phone, so by the time the house is locked up the car motor has warmed up and the temp. control has the interior a cozy 22. Then Alexa says hello and asks what I would like to listen to today?
