Still, I would rather be back on that horse than swimming near a great white!

No Formula! Do the stats! You've been swimming near great whites many a time. We all have. Most of the time we just don't see them. Horse riding is far more dangerous, but, if you're right into horses go for it.

Here's a girl flaunting the savage beast, ( or maybe she failed stats? ) What's up with you guys?

Ian, I don't know the stats for middle-aged male windsurfer falling from horse, but I expect they would be quite low! Does that mean its a safe thing to do?

Its like when people show that its safer in a plane than in a car. The difference is that I feel some control when I am in a car, and I feel that I am reducing my risk by driving appropriately. Its for everyone else to have car accidents!

I don't know if I have ever seen a shark in real life. I have seen horses in real life, but I was more scared by the cows on Lord Howe island.

Whilst that's pretty disrespectful, there is no way 2 fish carcasses attracted a 3.5m bitey. I've caught loads of different sharks of all sizes all over the state and they just aren't like that. The sharks are already there, well established and well aware that following the billion salmon swimming 100m off and up the coast is an easy meal. Once the salmon disperse, they then have the humpbacks to eat so it's no wonder they set up home off the SW coast and now whaling has stopped (it's ok to eat fish, cows, sheep etc to suvive but not a whale?) the numbers are skyrocketing. Just as well they don't attack us!

If 2 carcasses are a big concern i suggest you go to between Rockingham and Freo once the salmon really hit the metro area and watch what the real ****head fisho's do. The treatment of caught fish is deplorable! Probably by the same type of person who would bother to eat a wobbegong

Okay serious solution.
we get 3-4 killer whales and build them an entire marina the size of hillaries. No boats no pollution, big vents that flush seawater in and out.
breed some juvenile snapper and Dhuie in one section in there to release.
totally overpopulate the closer reefs with fish and ban fishing at all within three mile of the shore.

Now the killer whales, train them well and let them out every day for freedom.
train them to hunt and kill great whites but for us;the humans.
it is what they do naturally anyway we could maybe teach the world on how to keep killer whales not in tanks and for jumping through hoops but to hunt and kill for us to be free most of the day or even multiple days when a good hunt is on,
Eventually as are dogs from wolves these killer whales after several generations will become closer to humans. Perhaps and maybe not our sons but our sons sons sons could ride upon them like Neptune with a spear throwing tridents into great whites before the pack of killer whales surgically remove the great whites livers and eat them.
I am ready for the medal and ceremony

The point is the sharks were in the area for the salmon, then stayed in that same holding patten for 3 days at least..Something was keeping them their, and 20 m of that one spot..

The second point was zero signage from council for a few days, then they eventually stuck up the basic yellow and black shark warning sign. That one tends to be ignored as locals think its Bronzies. When they are warned its a GW, they pay atten. Again if you are pro cull or anti cull, why cant people work on mutual ground that will make a difference..

If 3-4m bitey's are swimming in a tight "holding pattern"(??) 20m(!) away from an object for at least 3 days, let me tell you it's significantly more serious than a few dumped wobbegong and salmon frames that the whiting and pickers are munching on!

Any videos? As we know in 2018 there is aways time to video or take selfies.

Lets face it, dead whales on the beach at Hamelin bay, dead whales on the nearby beaches to the attack, really, not such a great idea to go surfing IMHO..

So here's a solution -- kill all the cats in Australia, drop them in the water like bread crumbs to lead the sharks away to somewhere you don't care about, like Tasmania or Auckland....

We already did that, that's why they are in WA.

Had shark last night, bro caught one fishing the other day. Awesome food source.

They are a resource, fish them, even so called protected species. Manage it with sound science, that improves the more data and experience is collected.

Then see if it makes a difference.

In the meantime we might also see some tourist numbers increasing.

After all we are a nation of digging holes or selling non essential crap to each other in large shopping malls... oh and flogging property to each other at ever increasing mortgage levels.

Might as as well make a buck from tourism before the inevitable, create some more jobs in the fishing industry and having a good feed of great white shark while we are at it.

....or the jobs will be created for a few charlatans promising to stop the shark problem with all sorts of elixiar drum line gadgetry etc at the tax payers expense. Shark shields and black and white wetsuites....mmmm do you take CASH!,,

then te great white can't see you and is scared off from you...the most sublime ancient creature perfectly adapted to be the ultimate predator in their environment... nah man try and get past my black and white wetsuite mate!,, oh dear god we truly are a stupid species.

Fish the bastards, fund the science from that and have a good feed before the homo sapien is eliminated by the intelligent planet I say.

Both those videos i shared already, they were FB links though..

I just watched a story on CH 7 and the first surfer attacked says he saw a large shark and they left the water 1 hour before re entering the same spot. So his attack was as stupid as the second attack. Sorry but if people refuse to use commonsense, what else can we do. So our taxes just paid for an emergency air lift to Perth, surgery costs, ambulance charges for the second surfer attacked, and the cancelation of the MR pro. Then people start demanding we cull sharks to stop attacks..

Honestly lets just accept that you can't stop stupid

No, I don't think that. I think when salmon are running is a stupid time to be in the water. But only because we have allowed the white sharks to breed up again. People weren't getting attacked at every other MR surf comp or salmon run. Now, apparently, they are.

People are dreaming if they think they're going to pop a sign up at every beach a shark is sighted. If the signs don't get nicked they'll be ignored.

If people are still going in the water with first hand knowledge of shark attack and being told personally to leave the water by authorities then a sign ain't going to make a difference.

Never underestimate how stupid stupid can be. You don't need a sign to make sensible decisions.

Yeah in hindsight it was a bad call to re enter the water after waiting 1 hour but how many hours do you have to wait to not qualify as stupid in your book jb ? 3 hours 6 ? 24?

There was no dead whale known to these " stupid "surfers in the morning don't forget.

I'm pretty tired already of the attempts to rewrite shark attacks as entirely the fault of the surfer involved.

There's plenty of blame to go round on top of the surfer from the eco warriors who refuse to accept that maybe just maybe there are more large whites in WA these days to the labor govt that's quietly persued a small target do nothing approach.

Plenty of smart people have been attacked by sharks from doctors to lawyers to post grad qualified guys. How does that fit in your narrative jb?

Nah far easier to just blame the guy that got bit and keep it simple .

Bit of a low blow given that every single day our tax $$ are wasted on junky deadbeats who keep breeding, politicians using our money to pay for holidays and all sorts in between.

It's black and white. If we continue to protect them, numbers will skyrocket and they will thrive around the southwest where they have 8 or 9 months of plentiful food. Unless proper action is taken (a cull, netting most of the populated coastline, popular surfspots etc) then your grandkids in 30years time wont even need a sign at the beach as attacks will be a monthly or weekly occurence.

Honestly, what would you do if a 2m dugite came into your yard or house and started getting aggresive? Would you put a sign up advising customers or your kids to stay away or would you get the shovel out and eliminate the threat, regardless if its protected or not!

What about a spider? Both are animals just doing what they do but i bet you have no issues killing one when your mrs gets upset there is one inside?

That would only be true if sharks were evenly distributed around the globe and attacks were on a schedule, like buses and trains.

I guess the surfer who was swiped by the tail of a 3.5m white yesterday at gracetown was assessed as being not stupid enough to bite. Lucky him

Beaches closed for 2 days is all our crap fisheries minister can manage.

So setting aside the cull debate for a minute do you guys want regulation and your hand held to stay out of the water or do you want freedom to make your own choices? You can't gave both.
