To get things going again I have posted a pic of the my preferred shark mitigation strategy

Thank god the two attacked survived to live another day.
Very good it happened at the competition period with all attention to the world watching (so they can see the true colors of ecowarriors going above common sense).
Lets see if the embarrassment forces some real action on this (some f K fishing happening).
Why a tourist would come to expensive WA to surf and be shark bait? 99.99% of surfer tourists would rather spend their dollars somewhere else with waves and where is safer too.
Australia is exceeding in the level of stupidity in pushing Tourism dollars away in many fronts...this is another one

5 years in row international visitors numbers dropping in WA...and it will continue to drop unless something big changes.

I don't think that there is anything to argue about mate.
It's a big blow for tourism. We should be promoting shark fishing tours and competitions
Its pretty simple
There was less shark attacks:
(1) when we allowed fishing for sharks
(2) before we stuck tourists on boats waving meat to attract them
(and possibly to a lesser extent when they bury whales at popular beaches (duh not hard to figure that one was retarded)
also when we hunted whales. less food.
big sharks eat mammals not fish i hear so the rise in mammal numbers said to be more of those bad boys.
heading over to WA for a month at the end of the year. No GWS in my neck of the woods and the thought of getting in the water over your way doesn't really appeal. Mate suggested a scuba off some rocks off albany and I told him to Jam it. Might hire a board in gero but i'll be shxtting myself. And i'm no shark wus i kite/ wsurf and dive / spearo with plenty of sharks and in croc areas but those GWS are a different thing altogether. Figure if it scares me then it must scare the non watersport tourist.

The margaret River pro has been cancelled due to these attacks now. Apparently its safe enough for locals day in day out but not safe enough for a bunch of pros in their workplace despite jetskis drones and helis for protection. Now if thats not a wake up call nothing is. McClowan over to you sport watcha gonna do????

They will do exactly the same thing as when they lost the Red Bull air race, rally australia etc. SFA.
Isn't there a big surfclub carnivool this weekend? More food for the bitey's following the salmon north! Or maybe they will just stick to the pool?
Just putting it out there, but wouldn't it be easier to cull surfers because they come up onto the beach? Would also reduce shark attack numbers.

It is apt. Too chicken to brave the waters and accept personal responsibility so they want to get rid of the natural order...which is that sharks rule the oceans, not surfers....
I suspect this knee jerk reaction will crop up every time there's an attack....

lol they fished the great white numbers down to safe levels. yeah we are pussies these days.
Went all the way down to watch the Margaret river pro last year. No spectators were allowed on the rocks at Gracetown, due to dept of Environment.
I'm not kidding, that's like saying no spectators allowed at Ledge Point for Ledge to Lano.
Conspiracy perhaps? The comp was probably cancelled due to the poor conditions. I reckon they would've still run it if the box was pumping this week. Imo these shark encounters and their publicity couldn't have happened at a better time. The more people afraid to surf here the better as crowded lineups suck.

i reckon theres some truth in that but just maybe we get the best of both worlds down here now - less crowds and some action on protection as the tourism dollar takes a hit. Fark knows we have earnt a break our way!

Horses are our most dangerous large animal. Especially if you correct the stats for the amount of man-hours spent on horses each year compared to the man-hours spent in the ocean.

Just one point, many of you say cull them down to an acceptable level, (You chose to ignore scientific studies saying numbers are still low) but clearly this example would indicate that it only takes 1 shark..
So unless you remove all the risk of sharks, IE kill them all, will you really be safe
Lets face it, dead whales on the beach at Hamelin bay, dead whales on the nearby beaches to the attack, really, not such a great idea to go surfing IMHO..
Oh and lets remember, both these attacks "Could" have been avoided if the first group of surfers who were chased out early, had warned the next group of surfers, and the last attack could have been avoided if he had headed the beach warnings and fisheries instructions and got out of the water..
I get some have no interest in commonsense. But thats all it would have taken..

Good move that. I don't know why people trust a huge animal like that to treat you well.
I reluctantly went on a horse riding trip when in Chile a few years back. Of course, unlike most developed countries they didn't have helmets, so there we were riding horses without helmets in a foreign country on steep rocky ground! To make it worse, being the heaviest of the group at 100Kgs, I get the biggest horse which just happens to be the most stubborn horse in the group.
I don't know if its a well known thing that horses can tell this, but in this case the horse knew I didn't know how to ride and did whatever the heck he wanted to. Picture a horse that runs fast and then stands on the brakes to eat a bit of plant all of a sudden, many times during the trail ride.
Still, I would rather be back on that horse than swimming near a great white!
I saw what a horse did to mr hands and quite frankly it made me view horses in a different light.

Big sharks also follow the salmon, so many false facts get thrown around about sharks when the researchers know next to nothing about them. Comments like fish are too fast for the big sharks show a complete lack of anything regarding sharks & fish schools or anything nature really where predators target the slow, wounded or sick. As WA & NSW finding out big thing hungry, big thing bites something relatively soft & squishy that resembles & tastes like food, big thing satisfys grumble in tummy.
Saying great whites only eat high fat diets is like saying deer dont eat meat, dogs dont eat grass, birds dont eat rocks or we only eat hamburgers. Possibly they havnt evolved for us to be regular on they menu, for two long we have been fed test bite not enough fat content rather than bite to see if it is potential food & wait to see what happens, unfortunately no pro shark people are willing to put their lives at risk to disprove this.
The family in recent shark doco about Ballina area whose son died put it perfectly that everyones an eco warrior until their son or daughter dies.
Loving the fact they are consistently coming into Moreton Bay again & regularly being seen only a few km from my local sailing spot, like the plague proportions of bullsharks wasnt enough. Another decade or two we might have the crocs as well because they are equally as sacred.
I understand sharks have their place & keep the system healthy but I dont buy into the we are going into their environment thing, every one of us has just as much right to life as the shark except the surfers & swimmers arent killing the shark. Fishing some days are just a write off from them, & because I fish for sport i'd love to put that maybe 50+ year old fish back to enjoy the rest of it's day not get eaten by the opportunist sharks & for alot of those fish there are alot more sharks around than many species of fish.
It's an easy fix. I haven't eaten shark ever.....and I have never had a shark eat me. We have an agreement 
Resuming fishing them might help, but they sure get around.
