Thumbs Up

Hi All,

For many years, opinion on the "Red Thumbs" has been divided (ironically!)

The Thumbs provided a way for those who had an opinion, but not the time nor inclination to type, a way of having some input.

Give people tools, and people being the creative wonders we are, will find new & interesting ways of using them.

Imagine our surprise to find an individual who's sole purpose was to red thumb people. From memory, over 2000 red's issued, and about 3 greens. We introduced "ratio's". Then the further we looked into it, the more "special usage" of the reds we found. Couple this up with more complaints, and time to try a change.

The way it is now, is not in the spirit that system was originally intended.

So from today, we're going to trial a "Green Thumb Only" experience and see how it pans out...

Thoughts?

Help I'm stuck in a loop!

I would have thought the 'thumb balancing' you implemented a few years back would have cured this issue..

Perhaps given modern society - for the truly upsetting posts replace the red with a sort of grey one that is a non-specific, un-bully-ish, don't hurt their feelings, substantive equality, gentle way of saying RED.

Anyway to be serious, I agree with getting rid of them as they did become divisive and if u think they are still being misused then get rid of it. We all love water this should be the friendliest place on the web

Could have a system where a green thumb can be removed once by an individual, but not below zero.

Good on you admin. If people want to be negative they can own it (to some small degree, anyway), by having to post under their log on. Great move!

PS... Can someone tell Billboard, please.

If red thumbs upset you, perhaps the Internet isn't the place for you. . . .

what about putting a scroll down icon next to green and red thumbs ?

When you click on it you see who "thumbed" the post. A bit like Facebook and their "like"

You then have to assume your "thumbing" and not hide behind an anonymous click

If only 4 or 5 people support an idea, then the green graph peaks out.

That means there is no way to tell the difference between an idea that 5 people support, and another where 5 people support it, and 5 people don't.

At least the number of plus and minus votes should be saved, and the nett result displayed. My personal preference is probably to keep them though. People here are much more abusive with their words than their red thumbs, if anything it is the language and insults that could be addressed?

IMO I've always thought that it would be a good idea/interesting to see the number of actual red or green thumbs....

I say keep the red....

I think if you disagree with something, you should explain why you disagree, that way people can evaluate your criticism.
A red thumb serves no useful purpose, it's impossible to tell what is not liked and why, so nothing can be gained by it.

A green thumb on the other hand doesn't need to be specific, it's indicating an overall agreement or just pleasure in the post.

Keep the port and starboard thumbs. You need both to navigate the responses.

Add a counter to each. Enable one to toggle a thumb on and off without affecting the other thumb, IOW cancel a vote without reversing it.

They disabled the down thumbs on YouTube and the comments are flooded with morons who have no way of knowing they are morons because they lack the mental capacity to understand anything more complicated than a thumb. Seabreeze has a duty of compassion to not interfere with the education of morons not to mention a clear social responsibility the Enlightenment values of democracy and free speech.

So what's the point of having any thumbs at all, will you next introduce counseling for people who don't get enough green when they post something?

Imagine the trauma of posting a picture and not getting any green thumbs!

I for one have enjoyed the random instant polling that comes from the thumb system and have had my fair share of red thumbs. Imagine heavy weather without red thumbs .

Sad day I think.

Flame away suckers

How about just get rid of the thumbs system altogether. What's the point - really?

Just generally assume you are wrong, and 'we' will be sure to let you know if you are right by way of a green thumb. It'll save us all a bit of time that way ;-p

What about a circle with one side green and the other red, so you can tally the total amount of reds and the total amounts of greens? Sometimes its good to see whether its a good idea or a bad idea, and the number that agree.

Alternatively have a hexagon or whatever like some of the windsurfing mags have, and use it the same as they do so that nothing can ever be negative. Just six different vectors to show different things. So, no one can ever be wrong....

Sounds like it will go the way of F1 qualifying, it wasn't really broken but the decision makers thought that it needed improving but only managed to make it totally boring.

Now some bright spark will just vote like this......

= great post buddy
= great clown buddy
= you need to be slapped for posting that buddy
= your sister is so ugly buddy
= your post made me cry buddy

But how will the lefties be able to show their support for each others group-think moronic ideas without abusing people, it is their number 1 and only strategy.

Their red thumbs are gone, take away their abuse & insults and they will barely be able to post anything.
