Bali cops are fairly chill so long as you keep your wits about you and show good respect and manners.
Thailand is one place you don't want to **** around, one night I was thrown in the slammer over there copped a solid beating was covered in black bruises when I got back to Oz

He took a ping pong paddle to one of the clubs and started returning the balls.

Bali no thanks. Never touch nothing there but ride scooters and have a license. Got sick of being stopped and bribed. Those cops are utter pigs. Read"snowing in bali" an insight into corruption, trafficking etc. It was all facilitated by judges. Cops n lawyers working with traffickers.

I read that book recently while on holiday and, assuming its true, it really opens your eyes up to what went on there and still goes on there.

I changed my mind on Chapelle being innocent based on that book, just because it seems like bringing drugs to Bali does seem like a common thing, and it sounds like bribery is the way justice is done, and eyes are turned away.

In that book they talk about locals selling fake drugs to tourists, and it sounds like that's what happened to this young bloke. Which is sort of good, as they had nothing to pin on him, but they equally could have planted something on him if they really wanted to make him 'guilty'.

It sounds like how much money they can get out of you is the important thing. It seems like you have a window of opportunity to pay people off, but it only works when the number of people is still small.

Is it this risky for a regular person not interested in drugs, or is it risky for everyone over there?

You only need to look at visitor numbers to get an easy answer.

The majority of Western Australian's have probably been by now and when you start factoring in return visits, problems are pretty low.

A few idiots get caught doing drugs or taking alcohol too far, a few get complacent on the roads and a few run in to other issues.

All of which happens in Perth every day. You certainly get what you pay for but it's pretty safe.

My driver loses profits if I sit in the front seat. Cops stop us for kick-backs every day.
Gonna skooter it on the next trip. Anyone know any essential lingo that you can recommend to make it a less common/expensive habit?

I lived in Bali for 3 years. There are still a few places - far away from Kuta and the South - where if you make some effort and show some respect, Bali's unique culture can provide a magical experience. As for the rest of the place, the intersection of Indonesian corruption and millions of ****wit tourists - the majority of them Australian - has created a very dark and seedy underbelly. It was one of the main reasons I moved away. Too many racist, morons on this post blame the Indonesians alone.
****wit Australian tourists are as much to blame for what has destroyed that once beautiful island.

At 0:13 you can see the drugs in the cops hands about to be planted. This kid hardly even drinks apparently.
I Wonder what makes them choose you? He looks pretty straight laced. I guess if you are that dirty then they don't choose someone acting like a dick etc it's just the nearest easiest person. I find such a scant regard for someone's future (esp a kid) hard to take, and have always struggled when people say they love the place as I think it's an absolute shxt hole and a dangerous shxthole. When you can't trust the police its not worth going

I'd be really worried about 17 year olds having schoolies there

the ozzies there are ****wits - alot of them. Ive never set foot in a bar there and last time there , which was only my second and last time , we went straight to Uluwatu and stayed there and hung out on that coast. amazing spot - no hassles. I just didnt like the feeling of being possibly framed and going through some nightmare as i always hire a scooter overseas. Those bogans that hang at Kuta getting massages with big fat beer bellys are shocking. Never really shopped there but you hear these people at the street malls being horrid to the locals.
I could never really play the bribe game. dont know how. I tried last time but the guy decided to carry on directing traffic after taking the bikes papers. I got annoyed and motored off and had to pay the equivalent of 2 weeks bike rental for new papers. Wasnt alot of money but im glad the cop didnt get nothing. Ill be damned if im going to wait for him to get around to dealing with me. I had a helmet on and an international license so there was 0 reason for him to be getting a bribe.
Bali aint even on my radar these days.
