American not so magic....A M control issues and Luna Rossa's VMG speeds just superior. Shame first two SF races haven't been closer.

Incredible that Luna Rossa was 45 seconds faster for the 2nd race (R1: 27min 42sec / R2 26min 57sec)...considering wind was lighter but I suppose more in control?

I'm surprised you didn't post that data sheet up on the GPS Speedsailing forum Sausage. American Magic would take the points over there.

yep, it just kept getting faster.
Imagine if they had the larger jib like LR.
A good effort considering the work they hard to do.

(And a good test for the boat as well.)
Near as buggery to 100kms/hour still spins me out.

I cant wait until a few years down the track when these boats join the other old Ac boats in Auckland Harbour taking tourists out.
I'd pay for that.

Near as buggery spins the Americans out too (literally)

BTW - I'd give my left one to ride on one today (maybe not with Dean at the helm though)

NYYC had the cup forever & are finding out it ain't so easy to get through a challenger series. Hope they stick with it though, plenty of great sailors from the US and it seems weird to not have an American team in the AC.

Not so gutted for the Yanks but..................Barker would have to be the unluckiest bastard in AC history
Skipper/helmsman 2003: lost 5-0 to Alinghi
Skipper /helmsman 2007: 2 races up but lost 2-5 to Alinghi
Slipper / Helmsman 2013: NZ 8 - 1 up in a first to 9 final to then lose it 9-8 to Spithall (USA) after almost winning ultimate race only to have wind die and time limit expire only by minutes from finish line
Skipper / Helmsman Japan syndicate 2017: Was up against Artemis in SF 3-1 to lose 3-5 for right to sail against the Ziwis in LVC for the right to challenge USA in the Cup
And then to today!

I don't get out on the water as often as I'd like, so I guess I missed the moment that the sailing fraternity started using the words "puff" and "puffy" instead of "gust" and "gusty".

I feel like I'm watching a netball player commentate a cricket match.

It's all a matter of scale. there's a meteorological definition of "gust" on the www.

"Definition[edit]The wind is measured using an anemometer or estimated with a windsock. The average value of the latter is generally measured over a period of 2 minutes before the meteorological observation according to the World Meteorological Organization. Any significant variation at this mean wind during the ten minutes preceding the observation are noted as gusts in messages such as METAR.[2]It is generally reported in METAR when the peak wind speed reaches at least 16 knots and the variation in wind speed between the peaks and average wind is at least 9 to 10 knots.[1][3] In marine meteorology, the top speed of a burst is expressed in meters per second (m/s) or in knots, while the Beaufort scale is used for reporting the mean speed. When the maximum speed exceeds the average speed by 10 to 15 knots, the term gusts is used while strong gusts is used for departure of 15 to 25 knots, and violent gusts when it exceeds 25 knots.[3]. "

These boats are sailing in puffs

I'd like to say that I am sad American Magic had left the race for the cup. They have shown nothing but pure class throughout and beyond my disdain for returning to lead mines for an AC vessel, would've been my preferred Victor against the poms or the fancy wogs

If you really want to get into it Mozzy Sails' low budget productions are worth patiently going thru.

A whole lot of interesting design rules are determining these boats though. The T foils must be symmetric for instance. Why? Probably so the beam and righting moment is dictated by the one design foil arm.

And the "one foil in the water" rule, (which seems to be not applied strictly). So they can't leave the windward one in with negative flap for extra righting moment maybe?

Although they look radical the designer's statement,to the effect that - there's nothing new in them every idea has been tried before - . had me thinking.

The closest predecessor might be the IMOCA 65 s. Although not fully foiling, they have a foil to leeward to increase righting moment and reduce drag. The foils are movable/retractable although in dagger board boxes rather than on canting foil arms. The IMOCA65s do have a canting keel to shift ballast windward, so that component is covered.

Finally the start of Prada cup finals.
Light winds today with Prada previously having edge.
On course A and TNZ out on the water as well

Luna Rossa competitive in stronger winds too. What will INEOS do overnight to make up the deficit?
